Three kinds of “stackable”, and why it matters for the repair

A stacked pair. A separate front-load washer and a dryer of the same brand, joined by a stacking kit, the dryer on top. Each machine is a normal appliance and uses normal parts; the difference is access. A dryer fault on top can often be reached from the front or top without unstacking; a washer fault underneath sometimes means lifting the dryer off, which is a two-person job in a closet. This is the most common arrangement in Ottawa condos and newer townhouses, and the units are usually 27 inches wide (Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Electrolux) or 24-inch compacts (Bosch, Blomberg, Miele, LG compact).

A laundry centre. A one-piece unit with a top-load washer below and a dryer above in a single cabinet (Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Maytag, Kenmore). Common in older apartments and bungalow closets. Parts are specific to the laundry centre, not shared with the freestanding models, and the whole cabinet has to come out of the closet for some repairs. A washer-dryer combo. One drum that washes and then dries, ventless, usually 24 inches wide (LG, Samsung, Bosch, Blomberg, GE). No stacking at all, but it belongs here because people search for it the same way. Combos dry by condensing moisture with cold water or a heat pump; the common complaints are long dry times, damp clothes and error codes, and the causes are lint in the condenser path, a clogged drain, or a sensor rather than a “broken dryer”.

Dryer on top not heating. On an electric dryer, the thermal fuse, high-limit thermostat or element; on gas, the igniter or valve coils. Washer underneath not draining or not spinning. The pump filter (front bottom door on most compact and full-size front-loaders) collects coins and lint; the drain pump fails; the door lock wears. Walking, banging, the stack shifting. A stacked pair that was never levelled, or whose stacking kit brackets have loosened, will shake the dryer off square and strain the washer’s suspension. Laundry centre will not start or stops mid-cycle. The timer, lid switch or motor on the washer side; the door switch, fuse or motor on the dryer side. Laundry-centre timers are still available for most Whirlpool and GE models and are a same-visit part.

Combo unit washes but does not dry. Lint in the condenser duct, a blocked drain (the combo drains its condensed water through the washer pump), a failed heater or a moisture sensor. Ventless drying is slow by design; two hours for a full load is normal, four is not.

What the diagnostic covers

The technician reads fault codes on both machines, checks the stacking kit and level, runs the washer through a drain-and-spin and the dryer through a heat cycle, measures dryer airflow and inspects the vent (or the condenser path on ventless units), tests the fuses, thermostats, element or burner, the pump, lock and motor, and checks the hoses and the closet’s electrical and vent connections. If the fault is under the dryer, the pair is unstacked, repaired and restacked with the kit re-secured. You get the finding in plain language and a firm quote before anything is replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to unstack the units to repair them?

Often not. Most dryer faults are reached from the front or top, and most washer faults (pump, filter, lock, hoses) from the front. Bearings, motors and some belts on the washer need the dryer lifted off; we bring two technicians when the fault suggests it, and it is included in the quote.

Can you repair a one-piece laundry centre?

Yes. Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Maytag and Kenmore laundry centres use their own timers, belts, switches and fuses, and we carry the common ones.

Why does my stacked dryer keep blowing its thermal fuse?

Restricted airflow. Stacked units in closets have short, tight vents with a crushed elbow behind the machine more often than not. The fuse is replaced and the vent is cleared or re-routed at the same visit.
