Short answer
A washer that won’t start, whether it has no lights, won’t fill or won’t begin the cycle, usually has a faulty lid switch or door lock, a power problem, a failed control board or timer, a worn start button or selector, or simply an active control lock, delay start or paused cycle. Check the breaker, the outlet and the panel settings first, then book a diagnosis if it still won’t run.
01Before you book
Safe checks first
Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.
- Breaker and outletReset the washer’s breaker and test the outlet with a lamp or a phone charger.
- Control lockLook for a lock or child-lock symbol on the display. Most models release it by holding the marked button for a few seconds; your manual shows which.
- Delay start or pauseCancel any delay-start setting or paused cycle, then choose a new cycle and press Start.
- Door or lidClose it firmly. The washer won’t start until the door or lid is sensed as locked.
Stop using it if you notice
- A burning smell, or a scorched cord or plug
- The breaker trips again after you reset it
- Water around the controls or the wiring
Leave the washer unplugged and book a visit; don’t open the control panel yourself. Then call 613-301-0016.
02Common causes
Common causes of a washer that will not start
- Faulty lid switch or door lock. Front-loaders and most newer top-loaders won’t start unless the door or lid is sensed as locked. It is a very common cause.
- No power or a tripped supply. A tripped breaker, a bad outlet or a loose connection leaves the washer dead.
- Failed control board or timer. An unresponsive panel or a stuck timer stops the cycle from starting.
- Broken start button or selector. A worn start switch or cycle selector won’t trigger the wash.
- Active control lock or paused cycle. Sometimes a child lock, a delay start or a paused cycle is holding things up.
03Read the symptoms
Dead panel, or lights with no cycle?
The symptom narrows it down. A completely dark panel points to the supply first: the breaker, the outlet, the power cord or the line filter, and only then the main control board. Lights that come on but a cycle that never begins usually mean the washer is waiting for a signal it never gets, most often from the door lock or lid switch, sometimes from a worn start button. If the washer clicks, hums briefly and stops, or shows a code, write down what you see before you book.
04How we fix it
How B&M finds why a washer won’t start
We test in sequence: the power supply, the lid or door interlock, the start switch, then the control board. Ruling out the simple causes first means you don’t pay for parts the machine didn’t need, and it is rarely the motor. Lid switches, door locks and common control parts are routine repairs, so many of these jobs are finished on the first visit across Ottawa and Gatineau. See our washing machine repair Ottawa page for full service details.
