Front-load washer repair in Ottawa

A front-loader can spin at 1,200 rpm or more, seals its water behind a rubber door boot instead of a lid, locks the door electrically, pumps out through a filter you are supposed to clean, and balances a drum that hangs sideways on springs and shocks. Every one of those design choices makes the machine efficient, and every one is a failure point a top-loader does not have.

Most of the front-load washers we see in Ottawa are Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Electrolux, Bosch and Maytag, and the faults cluster by design rather than by brand.

Leaking at the front, during the wash. The door boot (the big grey rubber gasket) has a tear, a pinhole, or a pocket of hair, coins and detergent sludge that stops it sealing. Door will not unlock. The lock holds until the drum stops and the water is gone. If it stays locked, the drain has failed (water still inside), the lock itself has failed, or the board is not releasing it. Do not force the handle; the latch breaks and the repair doubles.

Mildew smell, black residue on the boot. Not a fault, but a maintenance problem that becomes one: the sludge eventually clogs the drain path and rots the boot. A boot replacement plus a drain clean fixes it; a cleaning routine keeps it fixed.

Not spinning, clothes soaking wet. Check the drain first (a wet load is often a drain fault), then the motor, the hall sensor on direct-drive LG and Samsung units, or the drive belt on belt-driven models. See washer not spinning in Ottawa.

The technician reads the fault codes stored in the control board, checks the door lock and its wiring, inspects the boot from both sides, empties and tests the pump filter and pump, checks the shocks, springs and counterweights, turns the drum by hand to feel the bearing, tests the inlet valves and pressure switch, and runs a short cycle to watch the fill, wash, drain and spin. That sequence separates a quick pump-filter clean-out from a tub-bearing job, and you get the answer with a written quote before any part is ordered.

• Clean the pump filter every two to three months.
• Use only HE detergent, and less of it than you think.
• Leave the door and detergent drawer open between loads so the boot dries, and wipe the boot fold monthly.
• Run a hot maintenance cycle with a washer cleaner every month or two.
• Level the machine and tighten the foot lock nuts once a year.
