Short answer
Our appliance repair in Centretown covers refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges, cooktops, range hoods and microwaves, from the towers along Bank and Elgin to the rowhouses off Somerset and Gladstone and the streets of the Golden Triangle. Centretown is in the downtown core, so no travel charge applies. Same-day visits are often possible when the schedule allows, and the repair is quoted in writing before any work starts.

02Neighbourhood
Appliance repair in Centretown condos and rowhouses
Centretown is Ottawa’s densest neighbourhood, and its housing comes in three broad kinds: high-rise condos, mid-century apartment blocks and walk-ups, and narrow heritage rowhouses and older houses that have been split into apartments. Streets like Bank, Elgin, Somerset, Gladstone, Kent and O’Connor often have all three within a few blocks.
That mix shapes the repairs. Condo suites tend to have compact or stacked laundry, apartment-size or built-in fridges and slimline or portable dishwashers, in kitchens where every inch is spoken for. The older rowhouses more often keep full-size machines in a basement, with plumbing and dryer venting that has been altered over the decades. Most of our Centretown calls are in condo suites and rental units, so booking around building rules is routine for us.
B&M Canada Appliances has repaired appliances across Ottawa since 1995. We service Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, Bosch, KitchenAid, Danby, Haier and the other major brands, in English or French.
03Condo kitchens
Common repairs in Centretown condo kitchens
Space-saving appliances tend to fail in predictable ways. This is where the technician usually starts:
| Appliance | What you notice | Usual cause |
|---|---|---|
| Apartment-size or built-in fridge | Fresh-food section warm, freezer still cold | Frosted evaporator from a defrost fault, or a stalled evaporator fan |
| Counter-depth fridge with dispenser | Water under the crisper drawers | Blocked defrost drain or a leaking water line |
| Portable or 18-inch dishwasher | Water left in the tub after a cycle | Clogged filter, crushed drain hose or failed drain pump |
| Slimline range | Oven slow to preheat or baking unevenly | Burnt bake element or faulty temperature sensor |
| Over-the-range microwave | Runs but doesn’t heat | Failed magnetron, high-voltage diode or door switch |
A fridge that stops cooling is the most urgent call, because food spoils within hours, so keep the doors shut while you wait. If testing points to the compressor or refrigerant, the sealed-system diagnostic is $159 + tax and the repair is quoted by phone. Our guide to a fridge not cooling explains the other causes.
Dishwashers, hoods and microwaves
Compact and portable dishwashers that clean well but leave everything wet usually have an empty rinse-aid dispenser, a failed heating element or a vent that no longer opens; see dishwasher not drying. Many condo kitchens have no ducted range hood at all: an over-the-range microwave or a recirculating hood pulls air through a grease filter and a charcoal filter and blows it back into the room. When the fan gets weak or noisy, a clogged filter or a worn fan motor is the usual reason; when the light, fan and controls all stop together, the control board or a thermal or door switch is worth testing.
Quick checks before you book
- For a portable dishwasher, make sure the faucet adapter is seated and the hoses aren’t pinched behind the unit.
- For a fridge, check that the vents inside aren’t blocked by food and that the door closes fully against its gasket.
- For any appliance that is completely dead, check the breaker in your suite panel before calling.
04Laundry
Stacked and compact laundry repair
Stacked and compact laundry pairs are some of our most common Centretown repairs. Many condo suites pair a 24-inch front-load washer with a stacked dryer, and some have ventless condenser dryers that collect moisture in a reservoir or pump it to the drain instead of venting outside.
When a compact washer stops with water in the drum, the pump filter behind the small front access door is the first thing to check; coins, hair ties and lint often block it. If the drum won’t turn, the door lock, drive belt, motor or control board is usually involved, and a washer that walks or bangs during spin is often just off balance or off level; if it isn’t, worn shock absorbers or springs are the likely cause. Leaks are commonly a torn door boot, a dispenser overflow from too much detergent, or a loose inlet hose. See washer not draining for more.
Ventless dryers that run cold or take too long usually need the condenser cleaned or a pump, sensor or heating element replaced. Vented stacked dryers in condos often push air through a long duct to the exterior wall, and a partly blocked run is a frequent cause of slow drying and of thermal fuses that keep failing. More on stackable washer-dryer repair.
05Older buildings
Heritage rowhouses and walk-ups
In the older houses and walk-ups, laundry is usually in a basement or a shared room, and the machines are full-size. Dryer vents there can travel a long way to reach an outside wall, and older drain stacks and laundry tubs can back up when a washer pumps out quickly. Slow drying is often the vent rather than the dryer, so the technician checks both. Washers in these basements commonly leak at worn fill hoses and door boots, and replacing old rubber hoses with braided ones is cheap insurance.
Mid-century apartment blocks
The walk-ups and apartment blocks built in the middle of the last century often have landlord-supplied fridges and ranges and a shared laundry room in the basement. In-suite appliances in these buildings are often older, simpler models, which makes them good candidates for repair: a defrost timer, a surface element, a bake element or a door gasket is a modest fix compared with replacing the whole unit. Shared laundry rooms are usually managed by the building, so tenants should report those machines to the landlord first.
Some heritage homes also have gas ranges or dryers. Our TSSA-certified technicians repair gas appliances, and the gas diagnostic is $129 + tax. If you ever smell gas, leave right away and call Enbridge Gas from outside. Electric ranges run on 240 volts, so please leave the panels and wiring to the technician.
06Renters and owners
For tenants, landlords and condo boards
Many Centretown units are rented. Tenants often book directly, and we can also coordinate access with the landlord or property manager. The written quote lets the owner approve the work before anything is done, and the written diagnostic report after the visit gives everyone the same record. If several appliances need attention during a unit turnover, list them all in the request so the technician can plan enough time.
Landlords and condo managers often want a repair-or-replace opinion on an older appliance before they approve a quote. Ask the technician at the visit; the written quote sets out the cost of the fix, so an owner who isn’t on site can weigh it against replacement.
For condo suites, tell us when you book about the service elevator, visitor parking or loading bay and any concierge sign-in. We plan the visit around those rules.
