Repair or Replace Your Fridge in Ottawa? A 2026 Decision Guide

The 50% rule, refined for 2026 fridges
The classic rule of thumb: if a repair costs more than 50% of a comparable new fridge, replace it. That’s still the right starting point in 2026. But for fridges specifically, the rule needs three modifiers:

Repairs that almost always pay off
These are the fridge repairs we recommend without hesitation across all ages — they cost much less than 30% of a new fridge:
- Door seal (gasket) replacement — $90–$170. Makes everything else last longer.
- Defrost system (heater, thermostat, timer) — $190–$320. Common cause of fridge not cooling.
- Evaporator fan motor — $180–$300. Quick swap, big impact.
- Thermistor / temperature sensor — $140–$220.
- Water inlet valve (for ice makers / dispensers) — $160–$280.
- Door switch / lighting — $90–$160.
The repairs where math gets harder
Two failure modes are the only cases where the repair total can approach 50% of a new fridge — and where age really matters:
Sealed-system failure (compressor, condenser, evaporator)

Main control board
$320–$580 typical. Boards almost always come back as factory-refurbished OEM with a 1-year warranty. On a sub-8-year fridge, do the repair. On a 10+ year fridge, get a replacement quote and compare.
Brand-specific notes (Ottawa)
What we see in the field:

A $300 repair on a 4-year-old Samsung fridge vs. replacement: you save roughly $1,200–$2,400 (mid-range French-door cost in Ottawa 2026), plus the cost of disposal, plus the cost of replacement food, plus the headache of fitting a new model into your kitchen cabinet opening.
