Repair or replace your fridge in Ottawa?

The fridge is the one appliance an Ottawa household can’t really live without. When it fails, you have hours, not days, before food is at risk, and suddenly you are making a buy-or-fix decision under time pressure. The classic rule of thumb is still the right starting point: if a repair costs more than 50% of a comparable new fridge, replace it. For fridges, it needs adjusting by age:

We recommend these repairs without hesitation at any age, because they cost well under 30% of a new fridge. Typical totals in Ottawa:

• Door seal (gasket) replacement: about $90–$170. It makes everything else last longer.
• Defrost system (heater, thermostat, timer): about $190–$320, a common cause of a fridge not cooling and of ice build-up.
• Evaporator fan motor: about $180–$300; a quick swap with a big impact.
• Thermistor or temperature sensor: about $140–$220.
• Water inlet valve (ice maker and dispenser): about $160–$280.
• Door switch or lighting: about $90–$160.

Only two failures can push a fridge repair toward 50% of a new unit, and age matters most with these.

Sealed-system failure (compressor, condenser, evaporator)

Sealed-system work has its own diagnostic, $159 + tax, and the repair price is given by phone once the fault is confirmed, which lets you compare it with a new fridge first. Main control board

Typically $320–$580. On a fridge under 8 years old, do the repair. On one past 10 years, get a replacement price and compare, and ask what warranty the new board carries.

• LG: linear-compressor models from 2014–2017 had widely reported compressor failures. If yours is from that window and the compressor is the issue, file a warranty claim with LG first, then call us. More on our LG appliance repair page.
• Samsung: twin-cooling and French-door models often show “not cooling” symptoms that turn out to be evaporator-fan or icing faults, not compressor failures. See Samsung appliance repair.

Take a $300 repair on a 4-year-old Samsung fridge. Against replacement, you save roughly $1,200–$2,400, the price of a mid-range French-door fridge in Ottawa, plus disposal, replacement food and the headache of fitting a new model into your cabinet opening. In years 1–8, repair almost always wins.
