Short answer
A frost-free fridge freezing up, with ice building up on the back wall or the evaporator, usually means the automatic defrost system has stopped working: a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat, timer or control board. A clogged defrost drain, a worn door gasket or a temperature set too cold can also cause it, and refrigerant problems occasionally do. A manual defrost restores cooling for a while, but the ice returns within weeks until the failed part is repaired.
01Before you book
Safe checks first
Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.
- Check the temperature settingsThe fridge should sit at 1–4 °C and the freezer at about −18 °C. A fridge section set below 0 °C invites ice.
- Do the paper testClose the door on a sheet of paper and pull it out. If it slides out easily, the gasket isn’t sealing there.
- Note where the ice formsFreezer back wall, behind the freezer panel, the fridge floor or the ice maker: the pattern points to the cause.
- Keep the vents clearMake sure food isn’t blocking the air vents between the freezer and the fridge section.
Stop using it if you notice
- The fridge section has risen above 4 °C
- Water is pooling near the outlet or the cord
- Ice is stopping the freezer door from closing
- A burning smell or an unusually hot back panel
Move perishables to a cooler with ice and book a diagnosis; unplug the fridge only if you can reach a dry plug without standing in water. Then call 613-301-0016.

Types of ice build-up in a fridge, and what they mean
Ice building up inside a refrigerator (on the back wall, on the floor of the fridge, around the evaporator or over the vents) is one of the most common fridge problems Ottawa homeowners face. It can stop the fridge cooling, block airflow and eventually spoil food. Before diagnosing the cause, look at exactly where and how the ice is forming, because different patterns point to different faults:
| Where the ice forms | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| Frost on the back wall of the freezer | Defrost system failure |
| Ice covering the evaporator (behind a freezer panel) while the fridge section warms up | Defrost system failure |
| Ice in the fridge compartment, with water dripping | Clogged defrost drain |
| A thick layer of frost on every freezer surface | Door seal letting warm air in |
| Ice around the ice maker | A recurring issue on some LG and Samsung models |
03Defrost system
Why does my fridge keep freezing up? The defrost causes
1. Defrost heater failure, the most common cause
Modern frost-free refrigerators typically run an automatic defrost cycle every 8–12 hours, when an electric heater melts the frost that has gathered on the evaporator coils. When that heater fails, frost builds up continuously. Within days to weeks the ice gets thick enough to block the evaporator fan, so cold air stops circulating. The freezer stays cold (it is still near the ice), but the fridge section warms up. It is a very common fridge repair in Ottawa on LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, GE and Frigidaire models.
2. Failed defrost thermostat (bimetal thermostat)
The defrost thermostat watches the evaporator temperature during defrost and cuts power to the heater once the coil is clear, to prevent overheating. If it fails open, the heater never comes on and frost builds up. If it fails closed, the heater can run too long and damage the evaporator. Either way, frost problems follow.
3. Faulty defrost timer or control board
On older fridges a mechanical defrost timer starts each defrost cycle; on newer electronic models the main control board does. A failed timer may stop starting defrost altogether, and a faulty board can disrupt the schedule. Telling a timer fault from a board fault takes testing with the right tools on site.
04Drain, seals, settings
Drain, door gasket and temperature-setting causes
4. Clogged defrost drain
Melted frost runs down a small drain tube to a drip pan under the fridge. Ice, food debris or mould can block that tube, and then the water has nowhere to go: it refreezes on the evaporator floor and eventually overflows into the fridge. You will see water pooling on the bottom shelf or ice forming on the freezer floor. A defrost repair should include checking and clearing this drain.
5. Worn or damaged door gaskets
Door gaskets seal out warm, humid kitchen air. Once they are cracked, warped or torn, that air seeps in constantly, hits the cold evaporator and freezes, laying down frost the defrost cycle never fully clears. The freezer gradually fills with frost and ice, especially near the door.
6. Temperature set too cold
If the fridge section is set below 0 °C, ice forms on food and from moisture in the air; the freezer belongs at about −18 °C, and turning it much colder only adds run time. Check the settings before anything else. Many homeowners turn the controls colder in summer, thinking colder is better, and end up with frost problems.
05Sealed system
When a refrigerant problem is behind the ice
In rare cases a refrigerant leak or low charge causes uneven cooling: part of the evaporator gets extremely cold while the rest stays warm. Heavy frost forms on the cold section while the fridge as a whole doesn’t cool properly. Refrigerant work needs a certified technician with specialized equipment. Sealed-system faults have a separate diagnostic of $159 + tax, and refrigerant labour is quoted by phone, never as a flat price.
06Manual defrost
The quick manual defrost, and why it is only temporary
If the fridge is heavily iced over, you can defrost it by hand: unplug it, prop the doors open with towels on the floor to catch the water, and leave it for 24–48 hours while the food waits in a cooler with ice. Cooling comes back for a while. But unless the failed defrost part is repaired, the ice returns within a few weeks. A manual defrost is a useful way to save your groceries until the repair visit, not a fix.
07Brands and cost
Fridge brands we repair, and what an ice build-up repair costs
We repair defrost system failures on most fridge brands in Ottawa and Gatineau, including LG (linear-compressor models too), Samsung (French-door models with ice maker icing among them), Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Maytag, KitchenAid, Electrolux, Bosch, Miele, Sub-Zero, Viking, Kenmore, Hotpoint, Inglis and Admiral.
The residential diagnostic is $89 + tax and is applied toward the approved repair; every repair is quoted in writing before work starts and carries a 3-month warranty on parts and labour. Defrost heaters, defrost thermostats, drain clearing and door gaskets are among the more affordable fridge repairs, while a control board costs more. With a new refrigerator costing roughly $800 to $2,500 or more, repairing an iced-up fridge is usually the better choice. Typical ranges are on our fridge repair cost in Ottawa page, and our repair or replace guide covers older fridges.
