Short answer
B&M Canada Appliances provides French-door fridge repair throughout Ottawa and, across the river, in Hull and Aylmer. When the fresh-food section warms up but the freezer drawer stays cold, the cause is usually a failed evaporator fan, a stuck damper or an evaporator iced over by a defrost fault. The residential diagnostic is $89 + tax, and you approve a written quote before any work begins.

02Why they fail
Why French-door fridges have their own failure pattern
A French-door refrigerator puts the fresh-food section on top behind two narrow doors and the freezer in a drawer below. Cold air is made in the freezer and pushed upward by a fan through a damper. Two doors mean two gaskets and a centre “mullion” flap that has to seal against both; the ice maker usually lives in the fresh-food door, where it is warmer than it would like to be; and the water dispenser, ice chute and door sensors all run through a wiring harness that flexes every time the door opens.
It is a very common layout in Ottawa kitchens built or renovated in recent years. Most of the French-door units we see are Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, KitchenAid and Bosch, and their faults cluster by design more than by brand.
03Common problems
Common French-door faults and their causes
Fresh-food section warm, freezer fine. The classic French-door call. The evaporator fan that moves air upward has failed, the damper between the two sections is stuck, or the evaporator has iced over because the defrost system has stopped. See fridge not cooling in Ottawa.
Frost or an ice sheet on the back wall. A failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost control, or a door that is not sealing; a mullion flap folded the wrong way is a common one. See fridge freezing up in Ottawa.
Ice maker not making ice, or making hollow or small cubes. The water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, the ice maker module itself, or, on Samsung in-door units, icing in the ice room. See ice maker not working in Ottawa.
Water dispenser slow, dribbling or dead. The inlet valve, a clogged filter (change it first), a frozen line in the door, or the dispenser switch and harness.
Water under the crisper drawers or on the floor. A blocked defrost drain sending meltwater into the cabinet, a cracked drain pan or the ice-maker line. See fridge leaking water in Ottawa.
Food freezing in the fresh-food section. A damper stuck open, a drifting thermistor or a control problem. See fridge freezing food in Ottawa.
Door alarm, “door open” light, doors not staying closed. A worn door switch, a gasket that has lost its magnetism, the mullion flap heater, or a fridge simply not tilted back enough for the doors to swing shut on their own.
Loud fan, clicking or buzzing. Fan blades hitting ice, a fan motor bearing or the compressor start relay. See fridge making noise and fridge making loud noise.
Error codes on the display. Samsung, LG and Whirlpool French-door fridges report sensor, fan, defrost and communication faults by code. Note it in your request; it narrows the parts to bring.
04The diagnostic
Inside a French-door diagnostic visit
The technician reads the fault codes and sensor readings from the display or the board, checks both door gaskets and the mullion flap, tests the evaporator and condenser fans, inspects the evaporator for icing, tests the defrost heater and thermostat, checks the damper, runs the water valve and ice maker through a harvest cycle, checks the compressor’s start relay and amp draw, and cleans the condenser if it is fouled.
That sequence separates an inexpensive relay or damper from a sealed-system fault. You get the answer and a written quote before anything is ordered, and a written diagnostic report after the visit.
05Repair costs
French-door fridge repair cost
The diagnostic visit is $89 + tax for residential customers ($129 + tax for commercial kitchens), applied toward the repair if you go ahead. As a guide: a relay, damper or door switch sits at the low end; an evaporator fan, defrost parts, water valve, gasket or ice maker module in the mid range; a control board in the upper range. If the fault is in the sealed system (compressor or refrigerant) of a home fridge, that work has a $159 + tax diagnostic and the labour is quoted by phone.
Typical ranges are listed on our fridge repair cost in Ottawa page. A visit between 9 PM and 7 AM adds a $100 flat after-hours fee (see emergency appliance repair); beyond 30 km from downtown Ottawa a travel charge may apply, and we confirm it when you book. The repair is backed by a 3-month warranty on parts and labour.
06Brand patterns
Brands and the faults we see on each
On Samsung French-door fridges we often see in-door ice maker icing and evaporator frost; on LG French-door fridges, linear compressor faults on certain model years (see also LG fridge not cooling); on Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag, defrost and damper faults; on GE, main board and dispenser harness faults; on Frigidaire, fan and door switch wear. Counter-depth and built-in French-door models from Bosch, Thermador and Sub-Zero are serviced the same way, with premium parts ordered as needed.
07Repair or replace
Repair or replace a French-door fridge?
Fans, defrost parts, valves, dampers, gaskets and ice makers are modest repairs on a fridge that should last twelve to fifteen years; repair them without hesitation. The compressor and sealed system are the only faults where the math gets close, and some LG and Samsung compressors carry an extended manufacturer warranty, so check your model’s coverage first. Our repair or replace your fridge guide sets out the rules of thumb by age.
If you do replace it, see fridge installation in Ottawa: a French-door unit needs a proper water line, levelling and a clear path through the doorway.

Why is the top of my French-door fridge warm while the freezer is cold?
Cold air is made in the freezer and pushed up by a fan through a damper. If the fan has failed, the damper is stuck or the evaporator has iced over, the freezer stays cold and the fridge warms up. These are parts-level repairs, often completed on the first visit when the part is common.
How much does French-door fridge repair cost in Ottawa?
The diagnostic is $89 + tax residential ($129 + tax commercial), applied toward the repair, with a written quote before any work. Relays, dampers and switches are at the low end; fans, defrost parts, valves and ice makers mid range; boards upper range. On a home fridge, sealed-system work has a $159 + tax diagnostic and is quoted by phone.
My ice maker stopped but the water dispenser works. What is it?
If water flows, the water side of the inlet valve is fine; the fault is the ice-maker side of the valve, a frozen fill tube or the ice maker module. On Samsung in-door units, icing in the ice room is a common cause.
Why do my French doors not stay shut?
Either the fridge is not tilted back enough for the doors to close on their own, a gasket has lost its grip, or the centre mullion flap is folded the wrong way. Levelling and a gasket check usually fix it.
Is a compressor repair worth it on a French-door fridge?
Under eight years, usually yes, and some LG and Samsung compressors are still under an extended manufacturer warranty. Past ten years, compare the quote with a new unit; the technician gives you both numbers.
What warranty comes with a French-door fridge repair?
Three months on parts and labour. Ask for the written terms.
