Appliance repair in the Glebe

The Glebe is one of Ottawa’s most established neighbourhoods, full of Edwardian and early-20th-century homes on narrow lots. That heritage charm comes with real-world repair challenges we know well: tight kitchens, basement laundry down steep stairs, older electrical panels, and appliances squeezed into spaces never designed for today’s wider fridges and front-load washers.

We work carefully in these homes, around hardwood, trim and narrow hallways and doorways. Alongside the brick houses there are newer condos around Lansdowne and along Bank Street, so we see aging refrigerators, dishwashers and laundry pairs as well as higher-end ranges in renovated kitchens. The Glebe is minutes from downtown, well inside 30 km, so no travel charge applies, and service is in English or French.

Renovations here often bring panel-ready dishwashers, built-in refrigerators, induction cooktops and wall ovens from Bosch, Miele, KitchenAid and Fisher & Paykel. We work around custom cabinetry and panels with care, and the same diagnosis applies whether the fridge is a built-in or a 15-year-old top-freezer.

Tight older kitchens bring one problem of their own: a fridge boxed snugly into an alcove that was built for a smaller model can’t shed heat from its condenser, so it runs longer, louder and warmer. The technician checks the clearance and the condenser coils as part of the diagnosis and tells you if the fit, not a part, is the issue.

Fridges and freezers

Warm food in the fridge almost never means the whole appliance is finished. Something in the cooling cycle has failed, and our technicians narrow it down by testing the defrost heater, the bi-metal thermostat, the sensor and the timer or board, then the evaporator and condenser fans, the start relay and the controls. Very often the answer is behind the freezer panel: a coil frozen over because the defrost cycle stopped working, a fault that is often repaired on the first visit.

Other fridge repairs we do here include water under the crisper drawers, ice makers that won’t fill or dispense slowly, leaking or noisy water valves, door gaskets that let warm air in and fans or compressors that have become loud. French-door, side-by-side, top- and bottom-freezer, built-in and panel-ready models are all covered, as are upright and chest freezers. When an older fridge’s compressor or sealed system fails, we say honestly whether the repair is worth it; that work has a separate $159 + tax diagnostic and is quoted by phone.

Dishwashers

Whether the complaint is a puddle on the floor, a gritty film or dishes that come out dirty, there is nearly always one specific cause. The technician goes through it in order: filter, sump, drain pump, hose, spray arms, inlet valve, heating element, door seal, and on a machine that won’t start, the control board and door latch. Most fixes involve a drain or circulation pump, an inlet valve, a gasket, a latch, a heating element or a float switch, or simply clearing the drain path. An oven that takes too long to preheat, bakes unevenly or produces no heat usually has a failed bake or broil element, a faulty temperature sensor, a relay stuck on the control board, or a door lock that held after a self-clean cycle. On cooktops we replace dead elements and failed infinite switches and repair cracked or unresponsive glass-top controls and induction zones that no longer recognize a pan. Gas ranges in older and renovated homes

Gas ranges turn up in original houses and renovations alike. Gas appliance repairs are done by our TSSA-certified technicians: burners that won’t light, igniters that keep clicking, weak or uneven flames, ovens that won’t heat and gas dryers with no heat. A gas appliance diagnostic is $129 + tax.

Microwaves and range hoods

An over-the-range microwave also serves as the hood, so one failure takes out both. Magnetrons, high-voltage diodes and capacitors, door switches, turntable motors, exhaust fans and control boards are the usual microwave repairs, on built-in and over-the-range models; standalone hoods mostly need fans, lights or switches. Many Glebe houses keep the laundry at the bottom of steep basement stairs, where the dryer vent has a long run to the outside and the plumbing is old. When drying slows down, the vent is as likely a culprit as the dryer, so we check both; leaking washers here usually come down to worn hoses and door boots.

Washers

A washer that halts mid-cycle with the tub still full looks alarming but is usually very fixable. The drain is the first suspect: a coin or sock caught in the pump, a clogged filter, a kinked hose or a drain pump at the end of its life. If the drum won’t spin, we test the belt, the motor coupler, the door lock or lid switch and the motor control board; heavy banging on the spin points to worn shock absorbers, suspension springs or drum bearings. Leaks are followed back to the door boot, fill hoses, dispenser, pump or tub seal and fixed at the source. We repair top-load, front-load, compact and stacked washers and washer-dryer combos.

Dryers

Clothes that are still damp after a full cycle mean we check airflow and heat before anything else. Common findings are a thermal fuse blown by a blocked vent, a burnt-out heating element or a failed thermostat, and on gas models a failed igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coil. If it won’t start at all, the door switch, start switch, thermal fuse or control board is usually at fault, while squeaks, grinding or thumps point to worn drum rollers, the belt or the idler pulley. We repair gas and electric dryers, stacked and compact units included, and let you know when the vent run needs cleaning.

2. Diagnose. The technician checks the whole appliance, not only the symptom you noticed.
3. Quote. You receive a written repair quote on site. The $89 + tax residential diagnostic counts toward the repair once you approve it.
4. Repair. When the part needed is a common one, the repair can often be finished in one visit; if a part has to be ordered, you get the timeline.
5. Warranty. A written diagnostic report follows, and every repair is backed by a 3-month warranty on parts and labour.
