Appliance repair across Hintonburg’s century homes and new lofts

Hintonburg has changed from a quiet working-class neighbourhood into one of Ottawa’s most sought-after areas, and its housing shows it. Brick century homes and semi-detached houses sit beside narrow infills, modern lofts and condo buildings along Wellington Street West and near Tunney’s Pasture and Bayview. Kitchens range from original galley layouts to fully renovated spaces with integrated appliances, so our technicians see a bit of everything here.

That range matters for repairs. An older laundry pair in a century-home basement and a new panel-ready dishwasher in a renovated kitchen call for different parts and different handling. We are comfortable with both: decades-old wiring and plumbing on one side, brand-new integrated installations on the other. B&M Canada Appliances has been repairing appliances in Ottawa since 1995, and we serve Hintonburg in English or French.

We repair Bosch, KitchenAid, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Miele, Fisher & Paykel, Jenn-Air and other major brands.

03Integrated kitchens

Panel-ready dishwashers and built-in fridges

Renovated Hintonburg kitchens often hide the dishwasher and fridge behind custom cabinet panels. A panel-ready dishwasher usually has to be slid out of its opening for pump, valve or leak repairs, so the technician removes and refits the custom door panel and works carefully around the surrounding cabinetry. We repair Bosch, Miele, KitchenAid and other integrated models. On Bosch dishwashers, E15 means water has collected in the base pan, often from a slow leak at the pump or a hose, while E24 and E25 point to a drain restriction; the technician fixes the cause, dries the base and resets the unit. See Bosch dishwasher repair and Miele dishwasher repair.

Built-in and integrated refrigerators move air through a grille at the top or bottom of the unit. When that grille or the condenser behind it is clogged, the fridge runs constantly and slowly warms up. Other common faults are defrost-system failures, stalled fans, failed ice makers and water valves, and door seals that no longer close properly against the panel. A sagging panel-ready door also lets warm air in, so the hinge and door alignment are checked along with the gasket. Premium built-ins have their own page: Sub-Zero repair. Sealed-system faults (compressor or refrigerant) have a $159 + tax diagnostic, and that repair is quoted by phone.

04Cooking

Induction cooktops, wall ovens and ranges

Induction cooktops are common in Hintonburg renovations. When a zone won’t heat or the cooktop shows an error, the cause is usually a failed generator (power) board, a cooling fan, a touch-control board or a pan-detection fault, and sometimes simply cookware that isn’t magnetic; a fridge magnet that sticks firmly to the bottom of the pan is a quick test. Wall ovens bring their own faults: a burnt bake or broil element, a failed temperature sensor, a convection fan motor or a door lock stuck after self-clean. Read more on induction stove repair and wall oven repair.

We also repair freestanding and slide-in ranges, glass-top elements and range hoods, including the ducted hoods that often go into renovated kitchens. Our TSSA-certified technicians take care of gas ranges and cooktops, with a $129 + tax diagnostic. Cooking appliances run on 240 volts or on gas, so please keep the panels closed.

If you smell gas, get everyone out of the house and call Enbridge Gas from outside.

05Original kitchens

Galley kitchens and freestanding appliances

Not every Hintonburg kitchen has been redone. Many century homes and semis still have a narrow galley layout with a freestanding fridge, a standard range and a dishwasher squeezed in beside the sink. These appliances are usually simpler and cheaper to fix than their integrated cousins, and they are often worth repairing.

Fridges

A freestanding fridge that warms up gradually usually has a dusty condenser coil, a failing evaporator or condenser fan, or a defrost heater, thermostat or timer that has stopped melting the frost off the coil. One that clicks on and off without cooling may have a failed start relay. Many older houses also have a second fridge or chest freezer in the basement; damp basements are hard on door gaskets and cause frost and condensation. Our guide to a fridge not cooling covers the causes in order.

Dishwashers and ranges

Dishwashers fitted into older cabinets sometimes sit on uneven floors, which lets water roll toward the door seal and drip out. Levelling the unit and replacing a worn gasket solves many of these leaks. Freestanding ranges usually need a bake element, a surface element, an infinite switch or an oven sensor rather than a whole new stove.

Hoods and microwaves

We repair range hood fans, lights and switches and over-the-range microwaves that have stopped heating, throw sparks or no longer vent. Countertop microwaves are usually cheaper to replace than to repair, and we say so.

06Laundry

Laundry closets and century-home basements

Condo and loft units here usually have stacked washer-dryers in a closet, while the older homes keep full-size machines in the basement. In a closet, space is the constraint: the pair may need to be pulled forward or separated to reach the pump, belt or door lock. In a basement, older plumbing and long dryer vent runs are the usual complications. When clothes need two cycles, a restricted vent is a likelier culprit than the dryer, so airflow gets checked first.

Front-load washers that leak or smell usually have a torn door boot or debris in the pump filter; top-loaders that won’t spin often have a worn coupler or a failed lid switch. Basement washers in older homes also leak at aging fill hoses. If your washer or dryer shows a code, write it down before you book. See stacked washer-dryer repair and washer leaking.

07Older wiring

Newer appliances in older Hintonburg homes

A modern fridge or front-loader with electronic controls often ends up in a house wired decades ago. Loose receptacles, shared circuits and voltage dips are hard on control boards, and they can cause resets or error codes that look like appliance faults. The technician tests the appliance itself and tells you if the symptoms point to the electrical supply instead, in which case an electrician should check the circuit. Please don’t open receptacles or test live wiring yourself.

The same goes for plumbing. Older shut-off valves under sinks and behind washers can seize or weep when they are finally turned, so if a valve won’t move easily, leave it and mention it when you book. Old galvanized supply lines can also shed rust and grit that clog the inlet screens on washers, dishwashers and fridge water valves, which shows up as slow filling, weak ice production or a water-supply error code.

What to expect when we come to Hintonburg

Send a request online at any time or call us. A request isn’t an appointment yet: we call or text to confirm a window of about three hours, and same-day windows are offered when the schedule allows. Tell us about street parking, a condo elevator booking or a narrow entrance, and include the brand and model number so the technician knows the model before arriving.

On site, the technician diagnoses the appliance, walks you through the fault and puts the quote in writing. You pay an $89 + tax residential diagnostic, credited toward the repair if you go ahead; gas appliances are $129 + tax. You receive a written diagnostic report, and completed repairs carry a 3-month warranty on parts and labour. Visits run 7 AM to 9 PM; between 9 PM and 7 AM a $100 flat after-hours fee applies.

Questions, answered

Something else? Call and ask.

613-301-0016
Can you work around tight spaces in older Hintonburg homes?

Yes. Narrow kitchens, stacked laundry closets and basement laundry are common here, and our technicians work in tight spots regularly. Clearing the area in front of the appliance helps.

Do you repair panel-ready dishwashers?

Yes. We repair Bosch, Miele, KitchenAid and other panel-ready and integrated dishwashers, removing and refitting the custom door panel as part of the repair.

How quickly can you get to Hintonburg?

Same-day windows are often available in the central west end when the schedule allows; if not, we book the earliest open window. We confirm the time by call or text.

My induction cooktop won’t heat one zone. Is it broken?

Not always. Check that the pan is magnetic and sits flat on the zone. If the zone still won’t heat or shows an error, the generator or control board usually needs testing.

Is it worth repairing the older appliances in my century home?

Often, yes. Freestanding fridges, ranges and laundry pairs often need only one inexpensive part, and with the written quote in hand you can weigh the repair against a new appliance.

Do you warranty your repairs?

Yes. Completed repairs carry a 3-month warranty on parts and labour; ask for the written terms.
