Appliance repair in Merivale

The Merivale area blends one of Ottawa’s busiest retail corridors with settled residential pockets. Around Merivale Road, Meadowlands Drive and Fisher Heights, most homes are 1960s split-levels, bungalows and townhouse communities, and many low- and mid-rise apartment buildings line the streets off Merivale and Baseline. Plenty of these homes keep their original laundry rooms but have updated kitchens, so we see a steady mix of older and newer appliances.

In a split-level, the laundry is often on the lowest level, with the dryer vent leaving through the rim joist or near a basement window. Vents that exit close to the ground can be blocked by snow, leaves or a crushed exterior hood, and a blocked vent makes the dryer slow and hot. Clearing the outside hood after a snowfall is a simple owner check.

In older homes the original duct is often thin foil or vinyl that sags and collects lint, and it can be crushed when the dryer is pushed back against the wall. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct with as few bends as possible keeps airflow up and lint where the trap can catch it. Inside the machine, no heat on an electric dryer usually means the element, thermal fuse or cycling thermostat; on a gas dryer, the igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils. A drum that thumps or squeals has worn rollers, glides or an idler pulley. See dryer not heating.

On washers in these original laundry rooms, check the fill hoses: old rubber hoses crack with age, and a burst hose can flood a lower level quickly. If the shut-off valve behind the washer is seized, don’t force it. A washer that holds water after the cycle points to a clogged pump filter or a pump that has failed; one that refuses to spin, to the belt, the coupler or the lid switch.

Updated kitchens and newer laundry pairs come with electronic controls that report faults as codes. Write down the code and the model number when you book; it points the technician to the likely fault. A few common examples:

• LG washers: OE (drain), UE (unbalanced load), LE (motor locked).
• Samsung washers: 4C (water supply) and 5C or 5E (drain).
• Whirlpool and Maytag washers: F9 E1 (long drain).
• Bosch dishwashers: E24 or E25 (drain restriction) and E15 (water in the base).

Some codes clear after a power reset at the breaker, but if one returns, the fault is real. If the warranty on a newer machine hasn’t run out, the manufacturer may pay for the repair, so check with them before booking.

Because many Merivale homes kept their original laundry rooms while the kitchen was updated, it is common to find a twenty-year-old washer beside a three-year-old dryer, or a new range next to a fridge from a previous decade. That raises practical questions when one of them breaks.

• Matched pairs: a washer and dryer don’t have to be replaced together. If the dryer fails and the washer is healthy, repairing the dryer usually makes more sense than buying a set.
• Older machines: mechanical controls and simpler designs often make older washers, dryers and ranges inexpensive to repair, as long as parts are still available.
• Newer machines: control boards and sensors cost more, but the rest of the appliance has many years left, so a repair is usually still the better value.

Fridge and freezer faults

A fridge that warms up but still runs usually has a defrost-system fault (heater, thermostat or sensor), a stalled fan or a dirty condenser; a fridge that is completely silent may have a failed start relay, control board or compressor. Ranges and cooktops

On ranges, uneven baking points to an element or sensor, a dead surface burner to the element, switch or terminal block, and a door that stays locked after self-clean to the lock motor or the control. Glass-top cooktops can also crack or lose a radiant element. Because a range sits on a 240-volt circuit, leave its back panel and wiring alone and let the technician isolate the power.

Dishwashers

Dishwashers that leave water behind usually have a clogged filter or a failed drain pump, and those that leave dishes dirty usually have a blocked spray arm or an inlet valve that doesn’t fill fully. If the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, a clogged disposal can back water into the tub.

Range hoods and over-the-range microwaves
