Frequently Asked Questions
Gas Appliances We Repair
B&M Canada repairs residential gas ranges, gas stoves and cooktops, gas wall ovens and gas dryers across Ottawa and Gatineau. Whether the appliance is standalone or part of a dual-fuel range, our TSSA-certified technicians diagnose and repair the gas side and the electronic controls that manage it.
Common Gas Appliance Problems
Burner won’t light, or clicks endlessly. Usually a worn spark igniter, a clogged burner port, or a failed spark module. On ovens, a glow-bar igniter that’s weakened with age will click on but never open the gas valve — the classic “oven takes forever to heat” symptom.
Uneven, yellow or lifting flame. A healthy flame is steady and blue. Yellow, sooty or lifting flames mean an air/gas mixture problem or a partially blocked burner — worth fixing promptly, both for performance and for safety.
Gas dryer not heating. Gas dryers share the usual dryer suspects — thermal fuse, cycling thermostat, blocked vent — plus gas-specific parts: the igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils. We carry the common parts on the truck.
Oven temperature drift. If bakes come out uneven or the oven overshoots, the temperature sensor or control board is usually to blame — both repairable without replacing the range.
If You Smell Gas: Stop, Don’t Troubleshoot
A persistent gas smell is not an appliance-repair situation — it’s a safety situation. Don’t flip switches or light anything. Get everyone out, leave the door open behind you, and call your gas utility’s 24-hour emergency line (and 911 if the smell is strong) from outside. Once the utility has made the site safe, we can repair or replace the appliance connection that caused it.
Why Licensing Matters for Gas Work
In Ontario, work on gas appliances must be performed by a TSSA-certified technician. It’s the law, and for good reason: an incorrectly seated valve or an untested connection can leak for months undetected. Every B&M gas repair ends with a leak test and a flame check, and our work is backed by a 3-month parts-and-labour warranty. We’ve been servicing Ottawa homes since 1995 — licensed, insured and BBB-accredited.
Gas Repair Pricing
The diagnostic visit for gas appliances is $129 + tax, reflecting the extra certification and testing gas work requires. You get a written quote before any repair begins, and the diagnostic fee is folded into the repair when you proceed with us.
Frequently Asked Questions
My gas oven clicks but won’t light — is that dangerous?
It’s usually a failed igniter rather than a leak, and the safety valve should be holding gas back. Stop using the oven and book a repair; if you smell gas at any point, follow the safety steps above instead.
Do you repair both the gas side and the electronics?
Yes. Modern gas appliances fail on the electronic side (boards, sensors, spark modules) as often as the gas side — we repair both in one visit.
Can you convert a natural-gas appliance to propane?
Many ranges and dryers can be converted with the manufacturer’s kit. Ask when booking and we’ll confirm for your model.
Same-day gas repairs?
Usually, yes — we hold same-day slots across Ottawa and Gatineau, 7 AM to 9 PM. For after-hours emergencies, emergency dispatch is available with a $100 emergency fee.
Which brands do you service?
All major brands — Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, Maytag, KitchenAid, Bosch and more.
