How a gas oven lights, and why it stops
Turn the oven on and three things happen in order. The control sends power to the glow-bar igniter, which heats to a bright orange. As it heats, its electrical resistance drops, which lets enough current flow through the safety valve to open it. Gas flows to the bake burner, the hot igniter lights it, and the burner runs until the oven reaches temperature. Then the cycle repeats every few minutes to hold the heat. Almost every gas oven complaint is one of those three steps failing: the igniter does not glow, the igniter glows but never gets hot enough to open the valve, or the valve opens but the burner does not stay lit. The diagnostic times each step with a meter rather than guessing.
Gas oven problems we fix across Ottawa
Oven will not light at all. No glow, no heat. Usually an open igniter, a blown fuse or thermal fuse, a failed oven control relay, or a door lock that thinks the oven is in self-clean. The full first-checks list is on oven not igniting in Ottawa.
Igniter glows but the oven never heats. The classic weak-igniter fault. The bar glows orange but does not draw enough current to open the safety valve, or it takes so long that the oven bakes at half power. On many models an igniter that takes more than about 90 seconds to light the burner is at end of life. This is the single most common gas oven repair we do and it is a same-visit part.
Oven takes forever to preheat. A weak igniter cycling slowly, a burner that lights only part of its length because the ports are blocked, or a temperature sensor drifting high so the control thinks the oven is hotter than it is.
Bakes unevenly or burns at the back. A burner flame that is uneven along its length, a convection fan that has stopped turning, or a door gasket that lets heat escape at the front. See oven temperature problems in Ottawa for how we test this with a reference thermometer.
Broil works, bake does not (or the reverse). Each burner has its own igniter. When one side works and the other does not, the fault is almost always the igniter or valve for the dead burner rather than the control.
Gas smell when the oven lights. A short puff as the burner catches is normal on older ovens. A smell that lingers, or a “whoomph” when the burner finally lights, means the igniter is letting too much gas through before ignition. That is a weak igniter and it should not be left; delayed ignition can crack the burner or the oven floor.
Self-clean problems. A gas oven that will not start self-clean, or will not unlock after it, is usually the door lock motor or the high-limit thermostat that tripped during the cycle. See oven not self-cleaning in Ottawa.
Control panel dead or error code. F-codes on a gas oven point at the sensor, the door lock, the control board or a stuck key. The board is tested before it is replaced.
What the gas oven diagnostic covers
The technician confirms the gas supply and shut-off valve, leak-tests the connector and accessible joints, starts the oven and times the igniter with an ammeter, checks the safety valve opens at the right current, inspects the bake and broil burners for full-length ignition and flame colour, checks the temperature sensor against a reference thermometer, tests the convection fan, the door gasket, the hinges and the lock, and reads any stored fault codes from the control. On a gas range the surface burners are checked at the same visit. Nothing is replaced until you have a firm quote in plain language.

Gas ranges, gas wall ovens and dual-fuel ranges
Most gas ovens in Ottawa homes are the oven half of a freestanding or slide-in gas range, and the repair above applies to those. Built-in gas wall ovens (single and double) use the same igniter-and-valve system in a cabinet, and the door and hinge work is the same as on an electric unit; see wall oven repair in Ottawa. Dual-fuel ranges pair gas surface burners with an electric convection oven, so an oven fault on those is an element, relay or sensor rather than an igniter; those are covered under oven not heating in Ottawa. For the burners on top, see gas stove repair in Ottawa; for other gas appliances, gas appliance repair in Ottawa.

Before you call: two quick checks
- Watch the igniter. With the kitchen dark, set the oven to bake and look through the bottom vent or under the oven floor panel. No glow within a few seconds points at power or the igniter; a glow that lasts several minutes with no flame points at a weak igniter or the valve. Either way it is a repair, but knowing which helps us bring the right part.
- Check the clock and the lock. Some ovens will not light while the clock is flashing after a power outage, or while the self-clean lock is engaged. Set the clock and make sure the lock lever is released.
Repair or replace a gas oven?
A gas oven under twelve years old with an igniter, valve or sensor fault is almost always worth repairing; the parts are modest and the rest of the appliance is simple and durable. The cases that favour replacement are a control board on a model with no parts supply, a cracked oven liner, or an oven where the door, hinges, gasket and igniter have all worn out together. Our repair or replace an oven in Ottawa guide has the decision table by age. If you replace, stove installation in Ottawa handles the gas hook-up and leak test.
Where we repair gas ovens
Ottawa-wide, including Kanata, Barrhaven, Nepean, Orléans, Gloucester, Stittsville, Bells Corners, Centretown and Blackburn Hamlet. Across the river: oven repair in Gatineau, Hull and Aylmer; en français, four qui ne chauffe pas à Gatineau.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my gas oven igniter glow but not light?
The igniter has weakened. It glows, but it no longer draws enough current to open the safety valve, so no gas reaches the burner. Replacing the igniter fixes it in one visit.
How much does gas oven repair cost in Ottawa?
The gas diagnostic is $129 + tax, covering travel, the leak test and the timed ignition check. An oven igniter repair typically lands between $180 and $350 for parts and labour; a control board can be more. You get a firm quote first.
Is it safe to use a gas oven that lights with a bang?
No. Delayed ignition means gas is pooling before it lights. Stop using the oven and book a repair; it is almost always a weak igniter.
Can you replace the igniter on a gas wall oven?
Yes. Built-in gas wall ovens use the same glow-bar igniter and safety valve as a range; the access is different, and we carry the common igniters.
My gas oven bakes unevenly. Is that a gas problem?
Usually a burner that is only lighting along part of its length, a stalled convection fan, or a worn door gasket. The diagnostic checks all three.
Do you offer same-day gas oven repair in Ottawa?
Yes, when scheduling allows. Call 613-301-0016 before 1 PM for the best chance of a same-day slot in Ottawa or Gatineau.
