A Cold Oven Ruins Dinner, a Party, or the Whole Week
Thanksgiving turkey, birthday cake, Sunday roast — nothing in the kitchen matters more than an oven that reaches the temperature you set. When the element glows but the air stays cold, when the gas keeps clicking but never ignites, or when the display shows an error code you’ve never seen before, you need a tech who can diagnose on the first visit.
Our Ottawa technicians arrive with the common parts on the truck: bake elements, broil elements, igniters, oven sensors, high-limit thermostats, thermal fuses, and control boards for all major brands. We service freestanding ranges, slide-ins, wall ovens, built-in combos, and double ovens — gas or electric.
Why Your Oven Isn’t Heating — 8 Common Causes
1. Burned-Out Bake Element (Electric)
The coiled element at the bottom of the oven has a break, a blister, or a burn mark. Often visible on inspection. Element replacement is a 30-minute job on most ranges.
2. Weak or Failed Oven Igniter (Gas)
Most common gas oven failure. The igniter still glows but doesn’t draw enough current to open the gas safety valve. Gas clicks, won’t light. Igniter replacement is the standard fix.
3. Faulty Oven Temperature Sensor
The thermistor probe that tells the control the oven’s actual temp. When it drifts or opens, the control either won’t call for heat, or the oven runs way off target. Codes: F1, F2, F3, F10, F30, F31.
4. Broken Broil Element
Broiler works, oven doesn’t — or vice versa. Bake circuit is independent of broil circuit on most ovens. One element can be dead while the other still works.
5. Blown Thermal Fuse / High-Limit
One-time safety that trips after self-clean cycles run too hot. Common after self-clean on Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid. Fuse replacement restores heat.
6. Failed Control Board (ERC/EOC)
Clock works, buttons respond, but the relay to the element or igniter never closes. Voltage test at the element terminals confirms. Board replacement is the fix.
7. Stuck Door Lock (Self-Clean)
Oven ran self-clean, door lock didn’t retract, oven thinks it’s still locked and won’t heat. Mechanical or motor-driven lock assembly needs to be freed or replaced.
8. Gas Safety Valve Failure
Igniter tests good, but the safety valve doesn’t open. Less common than igniter failure but more expensive. We test the igniter draw first — if it’s in spec, we quote the valve.
Cooktop Works but Oven Doesn’t?
That’s diagnostic. Surface burners run on a separate circuit — the oven side has its own element, igniter, and safety. Very fixable.
Common Oven Error Codes (Ottawa Service Calls)
These are the codes our Ottawa oven techs see week in, week out — roughly what each means before a hands-on test:
- Whirlpool / KitchenAid / Maytag — F1 / F2 / F3 / F5 / F9: Control / runaway temp / sensor open / self-clean latch / door latch.
- GE — F0 through F9, PF: Stuck button, high-limit trip, sensor fault, power loss.
- Samsung — E-08 / E-27 / E-OF / C-d1: Sensor / door lock / fan / convection.
- LG — F-09 / F-11 / F-19: Meat probe / relay / control error.
- Frigidaire / Electrolux — F10 / F11 / F30 / F31: Runaway temp / shorted key / sensor open / sensor short.
- Bosch / Thermador — E-011 / E-015 / E-305: Door / temp sensor / heating element.
Codes narrow things down — they don’t replace a proper test. An F1 can be the board, the sensor, or the wiring harness. We bring the test gear.
Gas Oven vs. Electric Oven — Different Fault Paths
Both types fail in a "won’t heat" pattern, but the parts and logic are different:
- Electric: Bake element, broil element, thermal fuse, oven sensor, 240 V supply. A single blown leg of the 240 V feeder (breaker half-tripped) will power the clock but give no heat — we check the outlet first.
- Gas: Igniter, safety valve, oven sensor, spark module (on electronic-ignition models). Must only be serviced by a qualified technician. We are licensed for gas appliance service in Ontario and Quebec.

Oven Not Heating — FAQ
How much does an oven repair cost in Ottawa?
Most oven repairs in Ottawa run $200–$520 including parts and labour. Bake elements, igniters, and sensors are on the lower end. Safety valves, control boards, and door lock assemblies are higher. The $89 diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you approve.
Can you come today for an oven not heating in Ottawa?
Usually yes. Same-day oven repair is a priority call for us. Phone 613-301-0016 before 2 PM for best same-day availability in Ottawa, Gatineau, and the surrounding suburbs.
My oven stopped working right after a self-clean cycle. What happened?
Classic self-clean aftermath. Either a blown thermal fuse, a fried control board, or a stuck door lock — self-clean runs at 900 °F and kills the weakest link in the oven. We fix all three regularly.
My gas oven clicks but won’t light — why?
On a gas oven that’s almost always a weak oven igniter — it glows but doesn’t draw enough current to open the gas safety valve. On a cooktop burner that clicks but won’t light, it’s usually a dirty or misaligned spark electrode, or a wet burner cap.
My oven runs way off temperature — bread burns or cake stays raw. Fixable?
Yes. That’s almost always a drifting oven temperature sensor. We test the sensor with an oven thermometer and replace the probe if it reads off. Some brands also allow a calibration offset in the control — we set that too.
Do you repair wall ovens and double ovens?
Yes — single wall ovens, double wall ovens, microwave-oven combos, speed ovens, convection and steam ovens. Built-in work takes more time but we’re set up for it.
Do you warranty the repair?
Every repair comes with a written parts-and-labour warranty. If the same fault returns inside the window, we come back at no charge.
