Short answer
An oven not heating while its light and display still work usually has a burned-out bake element, a drifting temperature sensor or only one leg of its 240-volt supply on an electric range, or a weak igniter on a gas range. A thermal fuse tripped by self-clean, or a stuck door lock, comes next. Reset the breaker and set the clock; if it still won’t heat, book a visit anywhere from Aylmer to Masson-Angers.
01Before you book
Safe checks first
Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.
- Reset both polesSwitch the range’s double breaker fully off and back on. If only one leg was live, the light and clock worked but the elements couldn’t.
- Clock and modesSet the clock if it is flashing (many ranges won’t bake until it is set) and make sure the oven isn’t in Sabbath or demo mode.
- Look at the bake elementSet bake at 200°F and look through the door after two minutes. A dark lower element while the upper one glows on broil means the bake element or its circuit.
- Cooktop flameOn a gas range, if the top burners won’t light either, suspect the gas supply (or, with electronic ignition, the range’s power). Never try to light the oven by hand.
Stop using it if you notice
- A smell of gas around the range
- A bright spot, blister or spark on an element
- A scorched outlet, cord or terminal block
- The breaker trips again after the reset
Smell gas? Leave the home and call Gazifère (or 911) from outside. Otherwise leave the breaker off and don’t open the back panel or any gas parts. Then call 613-301-0016.
02First question
Electric or gas? The fault list is different
Most ovens in Gatineau homes are electric, part of a freestanding range on a 240-volt circuit; a smaller number are gas or dual-fuel ranges. The symptom is the same, but the parts behind it are not, so the first thing we ask when you book is which one you have. Coil or glass burners on top mean electric; a flame means gas or dual-fuel.
The usual complaints: the oven light comes on and the display counts up but the cavity never gets hot; it preheats for an hour and stalls at 150 degrees; or the broiler works and bake does not.
03Electric ovens
Electric ovens: why they stop heating
Bake element burned out. The most common cause. The lower element develops a blister or a break, often visible as a bright spot or a burn mark. The oven still broils (a separate upper element) and the light works. The element is often replaced in the same visit.
Broil element out, bake works. The mirror case, and the reason an oven can “half work”.
Temperature sensor out of range. The thin probe at the back top of the cavity. When it drifts, the control either never calls for heat or shows a fault code: on many models F3 (Whirlpool, GE) or F30 and F31 (Frigidaire, Electrolux) point to the sensor, while F1 and F2 more often mean the control or a runaway temperature. It is tested with a meter and is an inexpensive part.
Only 120 volts reaching the range. An electric range needs both legs of a 240-volt circuit. If one leg drops (one pole of the double breaker, a burned wire at the outlet or the terminal block), the clock, light and burner indicator work and the elements don’t. If the fault returns after a full reset, the outlet or cord needs attention.
Control board relay or oven selector switch. On electronic ranges the board’s bake relay can fail; on older ranges, the mechanical selector or thermostat. Both are tested before they are replaced.
Thermal fuse or high-limit tripped. Often after a self-clean cycle. Some reset and some don’t; either way the reason it tripped, usually a blocked vent or a cooling fan, is checked at the same time. See oven self-clean not working.
Door lock engaged. A lock that thinks the oven is still in self-clean won’t allow bake; usually the lock motor or switch is at fault.
04Gas ovens
Gas ovens: why they stop heating
Weak or failed igniter. The glow-bar igniter is wired in series with the safety valve, which only opens once the igniter passes enough current. As it weakens with age, it glows but the burner never lights, or takes several minutes to catch. It is the single most common gas oven repair; gas oven repair sets out the full sequence.
Safety valve, thermostat or control. The valve opens late or not at all, or the thermostat or board never calls for heat. Each is timed and tested rather than guessed.
Gas supply. A shut-off valve left half-closed after the stove was moved, or a supply issue that affects the burners on top too.
Gas ovens have a $129 + tax diagnostic. Tell us it is a gas range when you book: gas service in Gatineau is confirmed at that point.
05The visit
What the diagnostic covers in Gatineau
The technician measures the voltage at the terminal block and tests the bake and broil elements; on a gas oven, the igniter is timed with an ammeter and the connections are checked for leaks. The temperature sensor is compared with a reference thermometer, the thermal fuse, high-limit and door lock are tested, the control’s relay outputs and stored codes are read, and the door gasket and hinges are inspected. The cooktop is checked at the same visit.
You get the finding in plain language and a firm written quote before anything is replaced.

08Repair or replace
Repair or replace an oven that will not heat?
An element, sensor or igniter on an oven under twelve years old is one of the best-value repairs in the house: a modest part on an appliance that routinely lasts fifteen to twenty years. A control board on a discontinued model, a cracked oven liner, or a door, hinges, gasket and element all worn together are the cases that favour replacement. Our repair or replace an oven guide sets out the decision by age. If you replace, appliance installation in Gatineau handles the electrical hook-up and the anti-tip bracket.

Why does my oven turn on but not heat up?
On an electric oven it is usually the bake element, the temperature sensor or one leg of the 240-volt supply; on a gas oven, usually a weak igniter. The light and display run on 120 volts, which is why they work while the heat doesn’t.
How much does it cost to fix an oven that will not heat in Gatineau?
The diagnostic is $89 + tax residential, or $129 + tax for gas. An element, sensor or igniter repair usually comes to $150–$350 in parts and labour; a control board can be more. You get a firm quote first.
My oven stopped heating after self-clean. Why?
Self-clean runs the oven far hotter than baking, and it is the most common trigger for a thermal fuse, high-limit thermostat or door lock fault. The part is replaced and the reason it tripped is checked.
Can I replace the bake element myself?
On many ranges it is two screws and a plug, but only with the range unplugged or its breaker off, and a burned element is often the symptom of a relay or wiring fault behind it. If you’re not comfortable, it is a quick, inexpensive visit for us.
Do you repair gas ovens in Gatineau?
