Short answer
Glass top stove repair is usually a one-part job. Under the ceramic glass, each burner has its own radiant element, a limiter that protects the glass from overheating, and an infinite switch or control relay. When one burner stays cold, one of those three has failed; the technician lifts the top and tests each with a meter. A cracked top is replaced as a part. The residential diagnostic is $89 + tax, applied toward the repair.

02Before you book
Safe checks first
Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.
Stop using it if you notice
- A crack that runs into a cooking zone
- A burner that won’t turn off
- A burning smell from under the glass
- The breaker trips when a burner is switched on
Turn the range off at the breaker and book a visit; liquids reach live elements through a crack, and a burner that can’t be turned off is a burn and fire risk. Then call 613-301-0016.
03Under the glass
What is under a glass top stove
A glass top stove (also called a smooth-top, ceramic, radiant or flat-top stove) is an electric range with a sheet of ceramic glass over radiant heating elements. Each element is a coil of ribbon wire in a ceramic dish, with a limiter switch on top that cycles the element to protect the glass from overheating. The knobs or the touch panel run through an infinite switch or an electronic control that feeds each element.
Because the glass hides everything, homeowners often assume the whole cooktop has failed when one inexpensive part has. The diagnostic lifts the top and tests each element and switch individually, which is how a “dead cooktop” usually turns into a one-part repair.
Induction cooktops look identical but work completely differently, with magnetic coils and no radiant heat. If your cooktop only heats magnetic pans and hums, you have induction; see induction stove repair.
04Common faults
Glass top stove problems we fix across Ottawa
One burner will not heat. The most common call. Almost always the radiant element itself (the ribbon breaks at one point), the limiter on top of it, or the infinite switch behind the knob. On touch-control models it can be a relay on the power board. Each is tested with a meter before anything is replaced. See also stove burner not working.
Burner stuck on high, or will not turn off. A failed infinite switch or a welded relay. Switch the range off at the breaker until it is repaired. See stove burner stuck on.
Burner cycles on and off constantly. Radiant elements are meant to cycle, but a burner that clicks off every few seconds at maximum and never boils water has a weak limiter or a switch that is dropping out. On dual-ring and bridge elements, one ring failing gives a half-hot burner.
“Hot surface” light stays on. On most radiant cooktops the indicator is driven by a contact in the limiter (touch-control models may drive it from the board). If it stays lit when the glass is cold, that contact or the board is usually at fault; if it never lights, the same part or its wiring is at fault.
Touch panel not responding, padlock locked, error code. Touch controls fail from moisture and grease creeping under the glass, from a boil-over shorting the membrane, or from a control board that has lost a segment. A child-lock icon that won’t clear is often a stuck key rather than a failure. F-codes on Frigidaire, GE, Samsung, LG and Whirlpool cooktops each point toward a part, and we read the code before opening the top.
Cracked, chipped or scratched glass. A crack in the ceramic glass is a repair, not a cosmetic issue: liquids reach the elements and wiring below, and a crack can grow across the top with each heat cycle. Stop using the cooktop until it is replaced. On most ranges the glass top is a single part that swaps with the elements refitted underneath; on many built-in cooktops the glass and frame come as one assembly.
Oven fine, cooktop dead (or the reverse). The cooktop and oven share a range but run on separate circuits inside it. A dead cooktop with a working oven points at the cooktop’s power board or a burned terminal block; a dead oven with a working cooktop is covered on oven not heating.
05The diagnostic
What the glass top diagnostic covers
The $89 + tax residential service call covers the visit and a full diagnosis of the cooktop, the elements, the switches and the control. The technician checks the supply and the terminal block at the back of the range, lifts or removes the glass top, tests each radiant element and limiter for continuity and resistance, tests each infinite switch or the relay board, and checks the wiring and connectors for heat damage (a browned connector behind a hot burner is a classic). The glass is inspected for cracks and for the seal around its edge, and on touch-control models the membrane is tested and the fault log read. If it is a range, the oven side is checked at the same visit. You get a written quote before any part is fitted.
06Price and value
Glass top repair prices, and when to replace instead
The residential service call is $89 + tax and is applied toward the approved repair; commercial units are $129 + tax. A radiant element or limiter and an infinite switch typically sit at the lower end of stove repair prices; a control board is typically $250 to $500; a replacement glass top depends heavily on the model and is quoted once we have checked the part price. Our stove repair cost page lists the ranges for every stove repair. After 9 PM and before 7 AM, a $100 flat after-hours fee applies (see emergency appliance repair); homes more than 30 km from downtown Ottawa may pay a travel charge, which we confirm at booking.
An element, limiter or switch on a smooth-top range under twelve years old is a clear repair, and a control board is usually still worth it under ten. A cracked top is the borderline case: on a mid-range model more than ten years old, the glass alone can approach half the price of a new range, which is where our repair or replace guide says to think about replacing. If you replace, stove installation covers the electrical hook-up and anti-tip bracket. Repairs carry a 3-month warranty covering parts and labour.
07Ranges and cooktops
Smooth-top ranges and built-in glass cooktops
We repair freestanding and slide-in smooth-top ranges, and built-in ceramic-glass cooktops set into a counter with a separate wall oven below or elsewhere. Built-in cooktops are serviced from below through the cabinet or by lifting the unit out of its cut-out, and the repair uses the same family of elements, limiters and controls.
For gas burners under a glass surface, which some newer ranges use, see gas stove repair. Coil-top and general range information is on our main stove repair in Ottawa page, with range repair and cooktop repair for those appliances.

09Care
Looking after a glass top so it lasts
- Wipe sugar spills (jam, syrup, candy) as soon as the burner is cool enough to touch. Sugar bonds to hot ceramic glass and pits it.
- Lift pots rather than sliding them; cast iron and stoneware with rough bases scratch the surface.
- Use flat-bottomed pans that match the burner size. A warped pan, or a small pan on a large burner, makes the limiter cycle constantly and cooks slowly.
- Never use the cooktop as a shelf. Most cracks come from impact, such as a dropped pot lid or a heavy pan set down hard, rather than from heat.
- Clean with a ceramic cooktop cleaner and a razor scraper held flat; abrasive pads dull the surface and hide cracks.

Can a cracked glass stove top be repaired?
The glass itself can’t be patched; it is replaced as a part, which on most ranges is a straightforward job. Stop using the cooktop until then, because liquids reach the live elements through the crack.
Why does only one burner on my glass top stove not work?
Each burner has its own radiant element, limiter and switch. One of those three has failed, and the diagnostic tests each with a meter; it is usually a single part.
How much does glass top stove repair cost in Ottawa?
The residential service call is $89 + tax, applied toward the approved repair ($129 + tax commercial). Element and switch repairs sit at the lower end of stove repair prices; a control board is typically $250 to $500; a replacement glass top is quoted after we price the part for your model.
Why does my burner keep turning on and off?
Cycling is normal on radiant elements, but constant short cycling at full power means a weak limiter, a failing switch, or a warped pan that isn’t making contact with the glass.
Is it safe to use a glass top stove with a chip on the edge?
A small edge chip outside the cooking zones is usually safe to keep using for a while; a crack that runs into a burner zone is not. Mention it when you book (a photo helps), and the technician confirms which you have.
Do you repair built-in glass cooktops as well as ranges?
Yes. Built-in ceramic cooktops are serviced from below or lifted from the counter cut-out, and the parts are the same family of elements, limiters and controls.
