Short answer

An electric stove burner stuck on high whatever the knob says, or one that won’t turn off at all, usually has a failed infinite switch (the control behind the knob), welded switch contacts or an element shorted at its receptacle. On electronically controlled ranges, a board fault can lock a burner on. Treat it as a safety issue: switch the range off at the breaker and book a repair instead of using it.

01Before you book

Safe checks first

Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.

  1. Breaker offTurn the range off at its two-pole breaker and keep it off until the repair; don’t rely on the knob.
  2. Which burner, which settingNote whether one burner or several are affected, and on which settings. One burner points to its switch; several point to the board or wiring.
  3. Knob and shaftWith the breaker off, pull the knob straight off and look for a cracked or stripped knob or shaft. Don’t remove the control panel.
  4. Model numberFind the model label (often on the oven door frame or in the storage drawer) and have it ready when you book.

Stop using it if you notice

  • A burner glowing red on every setting, or after it is turned off
  • Sparks or arcing where the element plugs in
  • Melted, scorched or discoloured knobs or panel
  • A hot outlet, or a breaker that trips

Keep the range off at the breaker, let it cool, and don’t open the control panel or touch the wiring. Then call 613-301-0016.

02Common causes

Why a stove burner gets stuck on high

  • Failed infinite (burner) switch. The most common cause: a burned-out infinite switch sends full power regardless of the knob setting.
  • Shorted heating element. An element shorted to the burner receptacle can stay on high.
  • Welded switch contacts. Contacts inside the switch can weld closed, so the burner won’t turn off.
  • Damaged knob or shaft. A stripped knob or shaft can fail to move the switch.
  • Control board fault. On electronically controlled ranges, a board fault can lock a burner on.

03Safe repair

Fixing a burner that won’t turn down

We test the infinite switch, the element and its receptacle, and the knob, and replace the failed part so the burner adjusts from low to high and shuts off as it should. On glass-top and touch-control ranges the control board is tested too. B&M has been repairing stoves since 1995, with factory-authorized repairs and TSSA-certified technicians for gas ranges in Ontario.

Gas burner that won’t shut off? Turn the knob to off. If the flame keeps burning or you smell gas, leave the home and call Enbridge Gas or 911 from outside.

My burner is stuck on high and will not turn down. Is it dangerous?

Yes, treat it as a safety issue: turn the range off at the breaker and book a repair. It is usually a failed infinite switch, a common fix.

Why will my burner not turn off?

Most often welded contacts in the burner switch or a shorted element. Both are repairable; we replace the faulty part.

Can you come out the same day?

Same-day visits are possible when the schedule allows. Keep the range off at the breaker until the technician arrives.
