A Dryer That Won’t Heat Is Worse Than a Broken One
The drum spins. The timer counts down. You hear the familiar hum. And then you open the door and the clothes are just as wet as when you put them in. A dryer that tumbles without heat wastes hours, racks up hydro bills, and leaves you hanging wet laundry over every chair in the house.
Our Ottawa technicians arrive with the most common no-heat parts on the truck: heating elements, thermal fuses, high-limit thermostats, cycling thermostats, gas igniters, flame sensors, valve coils, and the test gear to pinpoint the failure in minutes. Most dryer-not-heating repairs in Ottawa and Gatineau are finished on the first visit.
Why Your Dryer Isn’t Heating — 8 Common Causes
1. Blown Thermal Fuse
The #1 cause of no-heat on electric dryers. A one-time safety fuse that blows when the vent restricts and temperatures spike. Cheap part — but if you don’t fix the airflow too, the new fuse blows again.
2. Clogged or Crushed Vent
Lint-packed duct, kinked transition hose, or a bird nest at the exterior vent hood. Restricted airflow trips the thermal fuse, damages the heating element, and doubles dry times. We check airflow on every no-heat call.
3. Burned-Out Heating Element (Electric)
The coiled element inside the dryer’s heater housing eventually breaks. We test element continuity with a meter — a broken coil reads open and needs a new element. Very common on 8–12 year old electric dryers.
4. Failed Igniter or Flame Sensor (Gas)
Gas dryer drum spins, no flame. The silicon nitride igniter has cracked, or the flame sensor has failed open. We carry igniters, sensors, and valve coils for all major gas models.
5. Bad Gas Valve Coils
Igniter glows, goes out, no flame. The valve coils fail to open the gas solenoid. Standard repair — both coils replaced together.
6. High-Limit or Cycling Thermostat
Safety thermostat trips on restricted airflow. Cycling thermostat sticks open and stops heat early. Both common failures on Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore and GE dryers.
7. Moisture Sensor Stuck in “Dry”
Auto-sensing dryer shuts heat off after 2 minutes, thinking clothes are already dry. Greasy residue or fabric softener buildup on the sensor bars — sometimes a clean, sometimes a replacement.
8. Control Board / Timer Failure
Electronic control never sends the “heat on” signal. Mechanical timer contact worn out. Diagnosed with a voltage test at the element/valve. Replace the board or timer as required.
Heating On, But Dries Slowly?
That’s almost always a vent or airflow issue — we clean, test, and verify full exhaust flow on every call.
Common Dryer Error Codes (Ottawa Service Calls)
These are the no-heat codes we see on Ottawa and Gatineau service calls — roughly what they mean before a hands-on test:
- Samsung — HE / HE1 / HE2 / tS / tO: Heater / gas ignition / thermistor short or open.
- LG — tE1 / tE2 / tE3 / dE: Thermistor / condenser sensor / door / heat circuit.
- Whirlpool / Maytag / Kenmore — PF / F01 / F22 / F28 / E1 / E2: Power loss / main board / thermistor / motor comms / thermistor short.
- GE / Hotpoint — tE / dry / E4: Thermistor / heater circuit / control.
- Bosch — E:00 through E:13: Control / thermistor / heater / condenser.
- Frigidaire / Electrolux — E5A / E5B / E68: High-limit / cycling thermostat / control button stuck.
Codes narrow it down — they don’t replace a proper test. A thermistor code can be the sensor, the wiring, or the board. We bring the test gear.
Gas Dryer vs. Electric Dryer — Different No-Heat Causes
Most Ottawa homes run electric dryers on a 240 V outlet, but natural-gas and propane dryers are common in Gatineau and newer subdivisions. The fix is different:
- Electric: Thermal fuse, heating element, high-limit thermostat, 240 V circuit. A single blown leg of the 240 V supply (breaker half-tripped) will spin the drum but give no heat — we check the outlet first.
- Gas: Igniter, flame sensor, valve coils, gas supply shutoff. Safe to diagnose but should only be repaired by a qualified technician. We are licensed for gas appliance service.

Dryer Not Heating — FAQ
How much does a dryer repair cost in Ottawa?
Most dryer repairs in Ottawa run $180–$420 including parts and labour. Thermal fuses and thermostats are on the lower end. Heating elements, gas valve rebuilds, and control boards are higher. The $89 diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you approve.
Can you come today for a dryer not heating in Ottawa?
Usually yes. Same-day dryer repair is a priority call for us. Phone 613-301-0016 before 2 PM for best same-day availability in Ottawa, Gatineau, and the surrounding suburbs.
My dryer spins but there’s no heat. What’s the most likely cause?
On an electric dryer, #1 is a blown thermal fuse (almost always tripped by a blocked vent). On a gas dryer, #1 is a cracked igniter. Both are common, both are next-day-part or often on-the-truck.
Why does my dryer take 2–3 cycles to dry a single load?
Almost always airflow. Lint-packed vent, crushed transition hose, blocked exterior hood, or an over-long duct run. Dryer has to run longer to push moisture out — and the over-temperature events kill the heating element and thermal fuse over time. We test airflow on every call.
Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old dryer?
Depends on the fault. A thermal fuse or igniter on a 10-year-old dryer? Fix it — you’ll get years more use. A full heating element plus a burned terminal block on a budget model? We’ll give you the honest call on repair vs. replace.
Do you repair gas dryers in Ottawa and Gatineau?
Yes. We’re licensed for gas appliance service — igniters, flame sensors, valve coils, gas supply diagnostics. Natural gas or propane.
Do you warranty the repair?
Every repair comes with a written parts-and-labour warranty. If the same fault returns inside the window, we come back at no charge.
