Short answer
A dryer that runs but doesn’t dry clothes usually has an airflow problem: a lint-clogged vent, a crushed hose behind the machine, or an outside vent cap blocked by lint, a nest or winter ice. Overloading is another easy-to-fix cause. If the airflow is good, the fault is on the heat or sensing side: a partly failed heating element, weak gas valve coils, a cycling thermostat that cuts out early, worn drum seals or dirty moisture sensors.
01Before you book
Safe checks first
Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.
- Clean the lint screenRemove all lint. If you use dryer sheets, wash the screen in warm soapy water now and then; residue can clog the mesh even when it looks clean.
- Check the outside vent hoodWith the dryer running on heat, you should feel strong, warm airflow at the exterior flap. Clear any lint, nest, snow or ice.
- Straighten the hosePull the dryer forward: the duct behind it should make a gentle curve, with no sharp bends or crushed sections.
- Load it about three-quarters fullClothes need room to tumble. Split heavy loads such as duvets, towels and jeans into two.
- Wipe the moisture sensor barsClean the metal strips inside the drum with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol to remove dryer-sheet residue.
Stop using it if you notice
- A burning or scorched smell
- The cabinet or controls are very hot to the touch
- A gas smell near a gas dryer
- The breaker trips when the dryer heats
Turn the dryer off and leave it unused until it has been checked; if you smell gas, leave the home and call Enbridge Gas (Gazifère in Gatineau) or 911 from outside. Then call 613-301-0016.
02Why it happens
Why a dryer runs but won’t dry
A dryer that runs but needs two or three cycles to dry a single load is one of the most common appliance complaints we hear from Ottawa homeowners. It wastes energy, wears the dryer out faster and is incredibly frustrating. The causes fall into two groups: problems that stop hot, moist air leaving the drum, and problems that stop the dryer making or holding enough heat. Start with airflow, because it is the most common cause and the one with real safety implications.
If the dryer produces no heat at all, our dryer not heating guide is the better starting point. Long cycles on a dryer that does get warm are also covered in dryer takes too long to dry.
03Airflow causes
Vents, hoses, loads and seals: the airflow causes
1. Clogged or restricted vent, the most common cause in Ottawa
This is by far the most common reason a dryer takes forever, and the most dangerous, because lint build-up is a leading cause of dryer fires. The dryer makes hot, moist air that has to leave through the vent. When the vent is blocked by lint, a bird’s nest, or snow and ice at the outside vent cap (very common in Ottawa winters), the humid air recirculates through the drum and clothes stay damp however long the cycle runs.
Signs of a clogged vent: loads need two or more cycles, the outside of the dryer feels very hot, lint collects around the machine, or there is little airflow at the exterior vent cap. The fix is a thorough vent cleaning, once a year, or every six months for large families and homes with pets. A proper dryer diagnosis should always include an airflow check at the vent.
2. Kinked or crushed hose behind the dryer
The flexible duct between the dryer and the wall often kinks when the dryer is pushed too close to the wall, and a badly kinked hose restricts airflow almost as much as a clogged vent. Replace plastic or foil accordion hose with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct where you can: it doesn’t kink, is easier to clean and is safer.
3. Overloaded drum
The simplest cause and the easiest fix. Packed clothes can’t tumble; they clump into a dense mass that hot air can’t get through, and even a perfectly working dryer will take 90 minutes or more. Keep the drum about three-quarters full at most; many families find smaller loads cut drying time dramatically.
4. Worn drum seals
Felt seals around the front and rear of the drum keep heated air flowing through the clothes instead of escaping into the cabinet. When they wear out, much of the heat bypasses the load. Replacing them is a straightforward repair that restores drying efficiency.
04Heat and sensors
Heating, gas valve, thermostat and sensor faults
5. Weak or failing heating element (electric dryers)
On dryers whose element has more than one heating circuit, one circuit can break while the other keeps working. The dryer feels warm, but clothes come out damp after a full cycle. A multimeter test on site confirms it, and because the rest of the element is usually close to failing too, replacing it now is the practical choice.
6. Gas burner not staying lit (gas dryers)
A gas dryer whose flame lights briefly and then goes out usually has weak gas valve solenoid coils. The coils hold the valve open; as they weaken, the igniter lights the burner, the valve closes and the flame dies. The drum keeps turning but the burner runs only in short bursts, which gives the same symptom as a weak element on an electric dryer.
7. Cycling thermostat cutting out too soon
The cycling thermostat switches the heat on and off to hold the drum at its target temperature. As it starts to fail, it can cut the heat too early, so the dryer runs cooler, feels only mildly warm and takes longer. Replacing a weak cycling thermostat early prevents a full no-heat failure later.
8. Dirty moisture sensor bars
Most modern dryers end the cycle automatically using metal sensor bars inside the drum. Coated with dryer-sheet residue or mineral deposits, the bars misread the load: the dryer may decide damp clothes are dry, or in some failure modes run on indefinitely. Cleaning them is simple maintenance; damaged bars or a faulty sensor circuit need a professional replacement.
05Gas or electric
Gas and electric dryers: different faults, same symptom
Both types can leave clothes damp for different mechanical reasons. Electric dryers more often have a partly failed heating element; gas dryers are more prone to weak valve coils that let the burner cycle off. Both suffer equally from blocked vents. In Ontario, our TSSA-certified technicians repair gas dryers, and gas appliances have a $129 + tax diagnostic; on the Gatineau side, gas dryer service is confirmed when you book. 06DIY or pro
What you can fix yourself, and what needs a technician
Vent cleaning is a job many Ottawa homeowners can handle with a dryer vent brush kit from a hardware store such as Home Depot or Home Hardware and about 30 minutes. Cleaning the lint screen, straightening the hose and wiping the sensor bars are also safe owner tasks (more in our tips to avoid appliance breakdowns).
Anything beyond that (heating elements, gas parts, thermostats, control boards) is a job for a professional. An electric dryer runs on 240 volts, and gas work in Ontario requires TSSA certification, so working on either without the right training creates real safety risks.
07Cost and booking
Dryer repair cost and booking in Ottawa
For an electric dryer the residential diagnostic is $89 + tax, applied toward the approved repair when you go ahead; a gas dryer diagnostic is $129 + tax. No work starts until you have approved a written quote, and the repair carries a 3-month warranty on parts and labour. Typical prices for most of the parts behind slow drying (thermal fuse, cycling thermostat, heating element, gas valve) are listed in our Ottawa dryer repair cost guide, and if the dryer is getting old, our repair or replace guide helps with the decision.
Our technicians fix dryers that won’t dry in neighbourhoods such as Kanata, Barrhaven, Orléans, Nepean, downtown Ottawa, South Keys, Gloucester, Stittsville, Vanier, Manotick and across the river in Gatineau. A same-day visit is possible if the day’s schedule has an opening.
