How a gas dryer fails differently from an electric one
An electric dryer heats with a resistance element; when it stops heating, the element or a fuse is almost always to blame. A gas dryer heats with a burner assembly: an igniter glows, a flame sensor confirms it is hot enough, the gas valve coils open, and the burner lights. Every one of those parts can fail on its own, and each failure has its own signature. That is why “gas dryer not heating” is a different diagnosis from “dryer not heating,” and why the parts we carry for a gas call are different. It is also why the dryer can still tumble perfectly while producing no heat at all: the drum and the burner are separate systems.
Gas dryer problems we fix across Ottawa
Runs but no heat. The most common gas dryer call. Usually the igniter has failed (it no longer glows), the flame sensor has failed (the igniter glows but the valve never opens), or the gas valve coils have weakened (the burner lights, runs for a few minutes, then drops out and does not relight for the rest of the cycle). Clicks but does not light. The igniter is trying, but a weak igniter, a cracked igniter or a fouled flame sensor stops the sequence. On older units a clogged burner orifice does the same.
Takes too long to dry. Nine times out of ten this is airflow, not the burner: a lint-packed vent, a crushed foil duct behind the machine, or a clogged exterior vent hood. Burning smell or shuts off mid-cycle. Lint at the burner, a failing motor, or a cycling thermostat. Stop using the dryer until it is checked.
Gas smell. Leave the house, do not switch anything on or off, and call the gas utility first. Then call us. A gas smell is never a dryer repair to schedule for next week.
