Gas stove diagnostic: $129 + tax. Electric stoves and cooktops are $89 + tax residential service call ($129 + tax commercial). The gas rate reflects the certified handling, the leak test and the burner-by-burner flame check that every gas call includes. The diagnostic covers travel and a full assessment; the technician then quotes a firm price for parts and labour before any work begins.

If you smell gas, stop reading and act

A strong gas smell is not a repair to schedule. Turn off the burner knobs, do not switch lights or appliances on or off, open a window on your way out, leave the house and call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427 from outside. Once the utility has made the line safe, call us to repair the stove. A faint smell only while a burner is lighting is different: that is usually a slow igniter letting a little unburned gas through before the flame catches, and it is one of the most common gas stove repairs we do in Ottawa.

How a gas stove is different from an electric one

An electric stove heats with resistance elements and a simple switch. A gas stove is a small controlled-combustion system: gas arrives through a regulator, each burner has its own valve and orifice, a spark module fires the igniter electrodes, and the oven adds a glow-bar igniter and a safety valve that only opens once the igniter is hot enough. Every one of those parts can fail on its own, and each failure has a signature you can see or hear. That is why we carry different parts for a gas call, and why the diagnostic includes a leak test and a flame check rather than just a continuity test.

Gas stove problems we fix across Ottawa

Burner clicks but will not light. The spark is there but the gas is not, or the gas is there but the spark is weak. Usual causes: a wet or cracked igniter electrode, food and grease packed into the burner ports, a burner cap sitting crooked after cleaning, or a spark module that has lost one output. If every burner clicks at once, the module or a shorted switch is the suspect. See gas stove igniter clicking in Ottawa for the checks you can do first.

Burner lights, then goes out. On sealed-burner ranges this is usually a partly blocked orifice or a flame-sense problem; on older open-burner stoves it is often a loose burner head. A burner that cannot hold a low simmer without dying is the same family of fault.

Yellow, orange or sooty flame. A healthy natural-gas flame is blue with a small lighter-blue inner cone. Yellow tips, a lazy orange flame or black marks on your pots mean the air-to-gas mix is off: a blocked air shutter, a dirty burner, a wrong orifice after a propane conversion, or a regulator that is failing. This one matters for safety as well as cooking, because an incomplete burn produces carbon monoxide.

Gas oven will not heat or will not ignite. The oven igniter glows but never gets hot enough to open the safety valve, or it does not glow at all. Igniters weaken with age long before they fail outright, so an oven that takes five minutes to light and then bakes unevenly is telling you the igniter is on its way out. The full walkthrough is on our oven not igniting in Ottawa page, and the gas oven repair in Ottawa page covers the oven side of a gas range in depth.

Oven heats but the temperature is wrong. A weak igniter that cycles slowly, a drifting temperature sensor or a safety valve that opens late all produce the same complaint: cakes that sink, roasts that take an hour longer than the recipe. See oven temperature problems in Ottawa.

Knob turns but nothing happens on one burner. A single burner valve can seize, especially on ranges where a boil-over has run down into the valve body. We replace the valve rather than forcing it.

Control panel dead or error code. Modern gas ranges still have an electronic control for the oven and the clock. A dead panel after a power blip, or an F-code on the display, is usually the control board or a sensor, not a gas problem at all.

What the gas stove diagnostic covers

The technician confirms the shut-off valve and flexible connector, leak-tests every accessible joint with an electronic detector and solution, checks the regulator pressure, tests each burner for ignition and flame quality, checks the spark module and every electrode, runs the oven through an ignition cycle and times the igniter, checks the oven safety valve and temperature sensor, and inspects the door gasket and hinges on the oven. On dual-fuel ranges (gas top, electric oven) the oven elements and control are tested as well. You get the finding in plain language and a firm quote before anything is replaced.

Honest, up-front pricing

The gas stove diagnostic is $129 + tax. Electric stoves, ranges and cooktops are $89 + tax for residential customers ($129 + tax commercial). Typical gas-range repairs, parts and labour: a surface igniter electrode or a spark module at the low end; an oven igniter typically $180–$350; a burner valve or the oven safety valve typically $180–$350; a control board typically $250–$500. Our stove repair cost in Ottawa and oven repair cost in Ottawa pages set out every range. After 9 PM and before 7 AM a $100 flat emergency fee applies on top of regular rates. Addresses more than 30 km from downtown Ottawa may carry a travel charge, confirmed when you book.

Every repair carries a 3-month warranty on parts and labour. If the same fault returns in that window, we come back at no charge.

Gas ranges, gas cooktops and dual-fuel ranges

We service freestanding and slide-in gas ranges, drop-in and built-in gas cooktops (including five-burner and griddle-centre models), dual-fuel ranges with a gas top and an electric convection oven, and professional-style ranges with high-output burners. Propane-converted stoves in the rural parts of the city are also covered; the conversion kit orifices and regulator setting are checked as part of the flame check. For electric glass-top and coil ranges, see stove repair in Ottawa, the glass top stove repair in Ottawa page, and induction stove repair in Ottawa. Our gas appliance repair in Ottawa page covers gas dryers and other gas appliances in the home.

Three things to check before you call

  1. Burner caps and heads. After cleaning, a cap that is not seated flat will click forever and never light. Lift it, dry it, set it back squarely.
  2. Moisture. A boil-over or a wipe-down with a wet cloth can short the igniter electrode for an hour or two. Let it dry completely before deciding it has failed.
  3. The shut-off valve. If the stove was moved for flooring or painting, confirm the valve behind it is fully open. A half-open valve gives weak, uneven flames on every burner at once.

If those three do not solve it, the fault is inside the stove and it is time to book.

Repair or replace a gas range?

Gas ranges are long-lived: fifteen to twenty years is normal because the burner system is simple and the parts are inexpensive. An igniter, a spark module or a single valve on a range under twelve years old is almost always worth fixing. The exceptions are a cracked cooktop casting, a rusted-through oven cavity, or a control board on a discontinued model with no replacement available. Our repair or replace an oven in Ottawa guide walks through the decision by age and by fault. If you do replace it, stove installation in Ottawa covers the gas hook-up, the leak test and the anti-tip bracket that every new range needs.

Where we repair gas stoves

Frequently asked questions

Why does my gas stove keep clicking?

Clicking is the spark module trying to light a burner. It keeps going when the burner does not light (wet or dirty igniter, crooked cap, no gas) or when a switch is stuck telling the module a knob is turned. If it clicks with every knob off, unplug the stove and call us; that is a shorted switch or module.

How much does gas stove repair cost in Ottawa?

The gas diagnostic is $129 + tax, which covers travel, the leak test and the full assessment. Most gas stove repairs then land between $180 and $350 for parts and labour; a control board can run higher. You get a firm quote before we start.

Is a yellow flame dangerous?

It is a warning sign. A yellow or orange flame means incomplete combustion, which wastes gas, soots your cookware and can produce carbon monoxide. Stop using that burner and have it checked.

Do you repair propane stoves?

Yes. Propane ranges use different orifices and a different regulator setting; we carry both and check the conversion during the flame test.

Can you fix just the oven on my gas range?

Yes. The oven igniter, safety valve, temperature sensor and control are all serviceable on their own, and the oven igniter is the single most common gas range repair we do.

Do you offer same-day gas stove repair?

Same-day service is available across Ottawa and Gatineau when scheduling allows, and a stove that will not light or smells of gas is treated as urgent. Call 613-301-0016 before 1 PM for the best chance of a same-day slot.
