Short answer

A wall oven uses the same heating parts as a range oven: bake and broil elements or a gas igniter, a temperature sensor, a control board and relays, and a door with hinges, a gasket and a lock. The difference is the job. It is hard-wired, built into a cabinet and costly to replace, so repair almost always wins. The diagnostic is $89 + tax residential, applied toward the approved repair, and $129 + tax for gas wall ovens.

01What is it doing?

Common oven & range problems

Each guide explains what the symptom usually points to and what is safe to check yourself. Ready to book? Pick the symptom and it is filled in for you.

02Before you book

Safe checks first

Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.

Stop using it if you notice

  • Smoke or a burning smell from the cabinet
  • The oven keeps heating after it is switched off
  • A gas smell from a gas wall oven

For smoke or an oven that won’t stop heating, switch it off at its breaker and book a visit; for a gas smell, don’t touch any switch: leave the home and call Enbridge Gas from outside. Then call 613-301-0016.

03Built-in ovens

Why a wall oven is a different job from a range

Everything about the job differs from a freestanding range except the heating parts. A wall oven is hard-wired into a junction box rather than plugged in. It sits in a cabinet cut-out and has to be slid out, usually by two people, to reach the back. Double ovens have two of everything and share one control. Combination units pair an oven with a microwave or a steam module.

The units themselves are expensive, so the repair-versus-replace math almost always lands on repair. Most of the wall ovens we service in Ottawa are KitchenAid, Bosch, GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, Miele and Thermador. For the oven in a freestanding or slide-in range, see range repair; for the induction cooktop that often sits above or beside a wall oven, induction cooktop repair; for every cooking appliance, our main stove and oven repair page.

04Common faults

Wall oven problems we fix across Ottawa

Not heating at all. On electric units, the bake element (look for a blister or break), a relay on the control board, or the temperature sensor; on gas units, the igniter. See oven not heating and, for gas, oven not igniting or gas oven repair.

Runs hot or cold, uneven baking, long preheat. A drifting temperature sensor, a convection fan that has stopped, or a calibration offset. See oven temperature problems.

Error codes (F1, F2, F3, F10, E1 and brand equivalents). Most point to the sensor, the door lock, a stuck key or the board. Give us the code when you book; it usually narrows down the part.

Door won’t close, seal or lock. Worn hinges, a torn gasket, a broken lock motor, or a door that came off its hinge tracks after cleaning. A door that doesn’t seal makes the oven “not heat” while every heating part works. If the lock is preventing start-up, see oven won’t turn on.

One cavity dead on a double oven. Usually that cavity’s element or relay; the shared board is tested before anything is condemned.

Self-clean won’t run, or the oven died after a self-clean. The lock motor, or the thermal fuse that trips at self-clean temperatures. See oven self-clean not working.

Fan noise, or a fan that runs after the oven is off. Cooling fans protect the electronics in a built-in and run on after cooking by design; a grinding one should be replaced before it takes the board with it.

Display dead, buttons unresponsive. The touch panel, the membrane switch or the board. Repairable on most models; on some older units the panel is a combined part and we quote it against the unit’s age.

05Testing

How we test a wall oven

The technician reads the stored fault codes, checks the supply at the junction box, tests the elements or igniter, measures the sensor against a reference, tests the relays and the door lock, inspects the hinges, gasket and glass, checks the convection and cooling fans, and runs a heat-up to confirm the temperature at the centre of the cavity. On a double oven both cavities are tested. The oven is only pulled from the cabinet if the fault requires it, and you get a written quote before any work.

06Cost

Wall oven repair cost in Ottawa

The diagnostic visit is $89 + tax for residential customers ($129 + tax commercial) and $129 + tax for gas wall ovens, because gas work requires certified gas handling; in Ontario that is done by our TSSA-certified technicians. The $89 residential diagnostic is applied toward the repair you approve.

Typical wall oven repairs, parts and labour: an element, sensor or gasket in the low-to-mid range; an igniter, hinge or lock motor in the mid range; a control board or touch panel in the upper range. Wall ovens sometimes add a little labour for the pull-out. Our oven repair cost in Ottawa page sets out the ranges. An evening or overnight visit between 9 PM and 7 AM adds $100 flat (see emergency appliance repair). Beyond 30 km from downtown Ottawa, ask about travel charges when you book. Our 3-month warranty covers parts and labour on the repair.

07Repair or replace

Repair or replace a wall oven?

This is the appliance where repair wins most often. A new built-in wall oven costs several times what a freestanding range does, cut-out sizes have changed over the years so a replacement frequently needs a carpenter, and the heating parts that fail are modest. Even a control board on a ten-year-old KitchenAid or Bosch usually makes sense. The exceptions are a cracked cavity liner or a discontinued board with no supply, and we tell you honestly when that is the case.

Our repair or replace your oven guide lays out the math. If you do replace it, stove and oven installation in Ottawa covers hard-wiring a new wall oven into the existing cut-out.

Questions, answered

Something else? Call and ask.

613-301-0016
Is a wall oven worth repairing?

Almost always. Replacement costs several times a range, cut-out sizes have changed so a new unit often needs cabinet work, and the parts that fail (elements, sensors, igniters, hinges, even boards) are modest by comparison.

Do you have to pull the oven out of the cabinet?

Only when the fault is at the back or the sides. Elements, sensors, doors, hinges and many boards are reached from the front, and when a pull-out is needed we put the oven back level.

How much does wall oven repair cost in Ottawa?

The diagnostic is $89 + tax residential, applied toward the approved repair; $129 + tax commercial and $129 + tax for gas wall ovens. You get a written quote before any work. Elements and sensors are in the low-to-mid range, boards in the upper range.

My double oven has one side that doesn’t heat. Is it the board?

Usually it is that cavity’s element or relay rather than the shared board. We test the board before condemning it, because it is the more expensive part.

Can you repair a wall oven with a dead display?

On most models, yes: the touch panel or board is replaceable. On some older units the display and control are one part, and we quote it against the oven’s age so you can decide.

Is the repair covered by a warranty?

Yes: three months on parts and labour, with the written terms available on request.
