Why French-door fridges have their own failure pattern
A French-door refrigerator puts the fresh-food section on top behind two narrow doors and the freezer in a drawer below. Cold air is made in the freezer and pushed upward by a fan through a damper; two doors mean two gaskets and a centre “mullion” flap that has to seal against both; the ice maker usually lives in the fresh-food door where it is warmer than it would like to be; and the water dispenser, ice chute and door sensors all run through a wiring harness that flexes every time the door opens. Most of the French-door units we see in Ottawa are Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, KitchenAid and Bosch, and their faults cluster by design more than by brand.

Why is the top of my French-door fridge warm while the freezer is cold?
Cold air is made in the freezer and pushed up by a fan through a damper. If the fan has failed, the damper is stuck, or the evaporator has iced over, the freezer stays cold and the fridge warms up. All three are single-visit repairs.

If water flows, the inlet valve’s water side is fine; the fault is the ice-maker side of the valve, a frozen fill tube, or the ice maker module. On Samsung in-door units, icing in the ice room is a common cause.
Why do my French doors not stay shut?
Either the fridge is not tilted back enough for the doors to close on their own, a gasket has lost its grip, or the centre mullion flap is folded the wrong way. Levelling and a gasket check usually fix it.
Is a compressor repair worth it on a French-door fridge?
Under eight years, usually yes, and on some LG and Samsung models the compressor is still under extended manufacturer warranty. Past ten years, compare the quote with a new unit; the technician gives you both numbers.
