The one appliance where a bad install is a safety problem, not just a nuisance
A range is the only appliance in most Ottawa homes that carries a 240-volt circuit or an open gas line, sits at child height, and gets pulled forward every time someone cleans behind it. That is why the installation rules for cooking appliances are stricter than for anything else in the kitchen. A freestanding range needs its anti-tip bracket, or a child standing on an open oven door can bring the whole unit over. A gas connection needs the right flexible connector, a shut-off valve within reach, and a leak test, or a slow leak accumulates behind the stove. A cooktop needs a cabinet cut-out to the millimetre and the right clearance to the cabinet below. We see the results of skipped steps on repair calls across Ottawa every month, and none of them are cheap to put right.
Electric ranges and wall ovens
- The right cord and outlet. Freestanding electric ranges do not ship with a power cord. We fit the correct 3-wire or 4-wire 240 V cord for your outlet and confirm the outlet, wiring and breaker are rated for the range. Many older homes in Alta Vista, Carlington and Overbrook still have the 3-wire type; newer Riverside South and Findlay Creek builds have 4-wire. Bringing the wrong cord is the most common reason a new range sits unused.
- Wall ovens are hard-wired. Single and double wall ovens connect directly in a junction box, sit in a cabinet cut-out that must support their weight, and need the trim aligned to the cabinet face. We check the cut-out dimensions against the model before the old oven comes out.
- Anti-tip bracket. Fitted and engaged on every freestanding range, every time.
- Levelling and calibration. The range is levelled so oil sits evenly in a pan, and we confirm the oven reaches and holds temperature before we leave. If the oven runs hot or cold from day one, see oven temperature problems in Ottawa; a calibration offset is a quick fix.
Gas ranges, gas cooktops and dual-fuel
Gas work is where we are most careful. Gas hook-ups require certified gas handling: the appliance is connected with a new approved flexible connector of the right size, a shut-off valve is fitted or confirmed within reach behind the unit, every joint is leak-tested with solution or a detector, and each burner and the oven are lit and checked for a correct blue flame with no yellow tipping. If the range is being converted between natural gas and propane, the orifice kit is fitted and the regulator set. Gas range, cooktop and oven installs are billed at the $129 + tax gas-appliance rate. Never connect a gas appliance yourself, and if you smell gas after a delivery crew has connected one, leave the house and call the gas utility before you call us.
Dual-fuel ranges (gas cooktop, electric oven) need both a gas connection and a 240 V circuit, so both parts of the job above apply. If your kitchen has no gas line, we will tell you before booking that a licensed gas line installation is a separate job from the appliance hook-up.
Induction and electric cooktops
Drop-in cooktops are the fastest-growing part of our installation work in Ottawa, especially in Westboro, the Glebe and Centretown kitchen renovations. A cooktop install starts with the cabinet cut-out: too small and the unit will not drop in, too large and it will not seal. Induction cooktops draw more current than most older radiant cooktops, so the circuit is checked against the spec plate before anything is connected. The unit is sealed to the counter, the clips underneath are tightened, and the wall oven or drawer below is checked for clearance. Every installation is priced in writing before work begins. The quote depends on electric versus gas, freestanding versus built-in, whether an old unit must be removed, and whether the outlet, cord or gas connector needs correcting. There are no surprise add-ons once the technician is behind the range. After 9 PM and before 7 AM a $100 flat emergency fee applies on top of regular rates. Getting ready for the technician
Have the new range in the kitchen, still packaged, and leave the old one connected so we can see the outlet or gas valve. Send a photo of the outlet when you book and we bring the right cord. For a gas appliance, tell the dispatcher so the visit is booked at the gas-appliance rate. For a cooktop or wall oven, have the cabinet cut-out dimensions or the old unit’s model number handy.
