Two very different machines under one lid
Agitator top-loaders (the tall post in the middle) are the traditional design: a motor drives a transmission that turns the agitator and the basket, with a belt or a direct-drive coupler in between, a lid switch for safety, and a mechanical or electronic timer. Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, GE and Inglis built millions of them, and the older ones are among the most repairable appliances in the house because the parts are simple and cheap.
High-efficiency impeller top-loaders (a low, flat wash plate instead of a post) are a different animal: a direct-drive motor under the tub, a lid lock rather than a switch, a pressure sensor for water level, suspension rods that let the basket float, and an electronic control that decides how much water to use. Samsung, LG, GE, Whirlpool Cabrio, Maytag Bravos and Kenmore Elite are the common ones in Ottawa. They fail differently: lid locks, suspension rods, hub and basket problems, and error codes rather than timers and couplers.
The repair is different for each, so when you book, telling us “agitator” or “no agitator” helps the technician arrive with the right parts. For front-loaders, see front-load washer repair in Ottawa.
Top-load washer problems we fix across Ottawa
Agitates but will not spin. The classic top-loader fault. On an agitator machine: the lid switch (the machine will not spin with the lid open, and a worn switch thinks it is always open), then the motor coupler or the clutch. On an impeller machine: the lid lock, or a suspension problem that makes the control abort the spin. See washer not spinning in Ottawa.
Fills, then sits and hums (or does nothing). On a direct-drive Whirlpool or Kenmore, a sheared motor coupler: the motor hums, nothing turns. On an impeller washer, a failed lid lock or a control fault. Both are same-visit repairs.
Will not fill, or fills slowly. The inlet valve screens clogged with sediment (very common in parts of Ottawa with older water mains), a failed inlet valve, or a pressure switch and hose on an HE machine. See washer not starting in Ottawa if it will not begin the cycle at all.
Will not drain. A sock in the pump, a failed drain pump, or a kinked hose. Standing water at the end of the cycle also stops the spin. See washer not draining in Ottawa.
Banging, walking, lid popping on the spin. Worn suspension rods on an impeller machine (the basket sways until it hits the cabinet), worn snubber pads or springs on an agitator machine, or simply a load of towels on one side. If it happens with every load, the suspension is the repair. See washer shaking in Ottawa.
Loud spin, grinding, rust under the machine. Tub bearing and seal, or on a direct-drive agitator machine, the transmission. This is the expensive top-loader fault and the one where age decides. See washer making noise in Ottawa.
Leaking. Hoses and the inlet valve at the back; the pump or tub seal underneath; on impeller machines, a cracked outer tub or a split drain hose. See washer leaking in Ottawa.
Clothes come out dirty, or tangled and stretched. On an agitator machine, worn agitator dogs (the ratchet inside the top of the agitator) so it no longer catches; on an impeller machine, an overloaded drum or a clogged drain that leaves detergent in the load. The fix for the first is a small part; the second is usually habits.
Error codes. UL or UE (unbalanced), LD or nd (long drain), F7E1 or dL (lid lock), OE (drain), 4E (fill). We read the code and go straight to that system.
Two checks before you book
- Lid. Close it firmly and press the latch. On agitator machines, press the lid switch with a pen and listen for a click; no click, no spin.
- Standing water. If the tub still has water when the cycle ends, the fault is drain, not spin. Check the drain hose for a kink before you call.
What the diagnostic covers
The technician reads the fault codes, runs a drain-and-spin, tests the lid switch or lock, the inlet valve and pressure switch, the drain pump, the belt or coupler, the motor and (on HE machines) its sensors, the suspension rods or snubber and springs, the agitator dogs or wash plate hub, and the bearing and transmission. You get the finding in plain language and a firm quote before anything is replaced.

Repair or replace a top-loader?
Old agitator top-loaders are the best repair candidates in the house: a lid switch, coupler, belt, pump or set of agitator dogs on a twenty-year-old Whirlpool is a small job on a machine that may run another decade. The exception is the transmission or bearing, where the labour makes the job approach the price of a basic new washer. HE impeller machines under ten years old are worth repairing for locks, rods, pumps and valves; a bearing or a hub-and-basket job on an older one is the borderline case. Our repair or replace a washer in Ottawa guide sets out the numbers by age. If you replace, washer and dryer installation in Ottawa handles hoses, levelling and haul-away.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my top-load washer agitate but not spin?
On an agitator machine it is almost always the lid switch, then the motor coupler or clutch. On an impeller machine it is the lid lock or a suspension problem making the control abort the spin. All are same-visit repairs.
My washer hums but nothing moves. What is it?
On direct-drive Whirlpool and Kenmore top-loaders that is a sheared motor coupler, an inexpensive part. On other machines it can be the pump jammed or the motor itself; the diagnostic tells which.
How much does top-load washer repair cost in Ottawa?
The service call is $89 + tax residential ($129 + tax commercial). Switches, couplers, belts, valves and pumps typically land between $130 and $350 for parts and labour; a bearing or transmission is more, and we tell you before you decide.
Is an old agitator washer worth fixing?
Usually yes. They are simple, the parts are cheap, and many run twenty years or more. The exceptions are a transmission or a bearing, where we give you the number and let you decide.
Why does my HE top-loader bang on the spin with every load?
Worn suspension rods. The basket sways until it hits the cabinet. Replacing the set of rods fixes it and is a same-visit job.
Do you offer same-day top-load washer repair?
Same-day service is available across Ottawa and Gatineau when scheduling allows. Call before 1 PM for the best chance.
