Appliance technician in Ottawa

People describe the job in different words. An appliance technician is the trade’s own term. An appliance repairman or repair person is what most homeowners say. A fridge mechanic or dryer mechanic is common among people who grew up with mechanical appliances. A dishwasher fixer or washer fixer is what you type when the machine is full of water and you want it gone.

Whatever you call it, the person who arrives does the same work: identifies the fault with test equipment, replaces the failed part, checks the result and stands behind the repair with a warranty. This page explains what that person does, what one costs in Ottawa, and how to tell a good one from a bad one.

A good technician spends the first part of the visit not touching parts at all. They ask what the appliance did, when it started, and whether anything changed (a power outage, a move, a new detergent). Then they reproduce the fault and test the suspect components with a multimeter, an amp clamp or a thermometer rather than swapping parts on a guess.

• Fridge: the compressor start, the fans, the defrost system and the temperatures in both compartments.
• Washer: a drain and spin, the control’s fault log, the pump, the door lock and the motor.
• Dryer: airflow and heat, the fuses and thermostats, and the vent.
• Stove: the elements, or the timing of a gas igniter.
• Dishwasher: a fill, a wash and a drain, with the pump, valve and float checked.

The result of that sequence is a single sentence: here is what failed, here is what it costs to fix, here is whether it is worth it. Only then do parts come out. Visits between 9 PM and 7 AM add a $100 flat after-hours fee on top of regular rates. Addresses more than 30 km from downtown Ottawa may carry a travel charge, confirmed when you book. Every repair carries a 3-month warranty on parts and labour, and you receive a written diagnostic report.

Two things we do not do: we do not advertise a no-charge service call that is quietly built into the repair price, and we do not charge by the hour with the meter running while a technician looks for parts. The diagnostic is one fixed number and the repair is one written quote.

1. They quote the diagnostic fee before they come, and the repair before they start. A price that appears only after the appliance is in pieces is the oldest trick in the trade.
2. They test before they replace. Ask what they found and how they know. “The board is gone” with no meter reading is a guess you are paying for.
3. They tell you when not to repair. A fifteen-year-old fridge with a sealed-system leak is usually not worth the money, and an honest technician says so. Our repair or replace guides put that in writing.
4. They come prepared. Thermal fuses, drain pumps, igniters, start relays, door locks and belts are common enough that a well-prepared technician brings them. Ordering everything means a second visit and a second wait.
5. They put a warranty on the work. Parts and labour, in writing, with a number to call.
6. They handle gas properly. In Ontario, gas appliance work needs a TSSA-certified technician, and any gas repair should end with a leak test. If nobody mentions it, ask.
