Technician, repairman, mechanic, fixer: it is the same person
People describe the job in different words. An appliance technician is the trade’s own term. An appliance repairman or repair person is what most homeowners say. A fridge mechanic or dryer mechanic is common among people who grew up with mechanical appliances. A dishwasher fixer or washer fixer is what you type when the machine is full of water and you want it gone. Whatever you call it, the person who arrives does the same work: identifies the fault with test equipment, replaces the failed part, tests the appliance through a full cycle, and stands behind the repair with a warranty. This page explains what that person does, what they cost in Ottawa, and how to tell a good one from a bad one.
What an in-home appliance technician actually does
A good technician spends the first part of the visit not touching parts at all. They ask what the appliance did, when it started, and whether anything changed (a power outage, a move, a new detergent). Then they reproduce the fault and test the suspect components with a multimeter, an amp clamp or a thermometer rather than swapping parts on a guess. On a fridge that means checking the compressor start, the fans, the defrost system and the temperatures in both compartments. On a washer it means running a drain and spin, reading the control’s fault log, and checking the pump, the door lock and the motor. On a dryer it means measuring airflow and heat, testing the fuses and thermostats, and inspecting the vent. On a stove it means testing elements or timing an igniter. On a dishwasher it means watching a fill, a wash and a drain and checking the pump, valve and float.
The result of that sequence is a single sentence: here is what failed, here is what it costs to fix, here is whether it is worth it. Only then do parts come out of the truck. That order is what separates a technician from a parts-changer, and it is why our diagnostic is a fixed price rather than an hourly clock.

What an appliance technician costs in Ottawa
Our service call is $89 + tax for residential customers ($129 + tax commercial). Gas appliances (gas stoves, gas ovens, gas dryers) are $129 + tax because gas work requires certified handling and a leak test on every visit. The service call covers travel and the full diagnosis; parts and labour are quoted firmly before the repair starts, and most common repairs land between $130 and $450 all-in. The appliance repair cost guide for Ottawa breaks that down by appliance and by part. After 9 PM and before 7 AM a $100 flat emergency fee applies on top of regular rates. Addresses more than 30 km from downtown Ottawa may carry a travel charge, confirmed when you book. Every repair carries a 3-month warranty on parts and labour.
Two things we do not do: we do not advertise a “free” service call that is quietly built into the repair price, and we do not charge by the hour with the meter running while a technician looks for parts. The diagnostic is one fixed number and the repair is one fixed quote.

How to tell a good appliance technician from a bad one
- They quote the diagnostic fee before they come, and the repair before they start. A price that appears only after the appliance is in pieces is the oldest trick in the trade.
- They test before they replace. Ask what they found and how they know. “The board is gone” with no meter reading is a guess you are paying for.
- They tell you when not to repair. A fifteen-year-old fridge with a sealed-system leak is usually not worth the money, and an honest technician says so. Our repair or replace guides put that in writing.
- They carry parts. Thermal fuses, drain pumps, igniters, start relays, door locks and belts should be on the truck. Ordering everything means a second visit and a second wait.
- They put a warranty on the work. Parts and labour, in writing, with a number to call.
- They handle gas properly. Any gas appliance visit should include a leak test. If nobody mentions it, ask.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an appliance technician and an appliance repairman?
Nothing in practice. Technician is the trade term; repairman, repair person, mechanic and fixer are everyday words for the same in-home service.
How much does an appliance technician charge in Ottawa?
Our service call is $89 + tax residential ($129 + tax commercial, and $129 + tax for gas appliances). It covers travel and the diagnosis; the repair is quoted firmly on top of that before work begins.
Can a technician fix my appliance on the first visit?
Usually. Our trucks carry the parts that fail most often, so the majority of fridge, washer, dryer, stove and dishwasher repairs finish in one visit. If a model-specific part must be ordered, there is no second service-call fee.
Do you send a technician the same day?
Same-day service is available across Ottawa and Gatineau when scheduling allows. Call before 1 PM for the best chance.
Do your technicians speak French?
Yes. Our technicians are bilingual and serve Gatineau, Hull and Aylmer as well as Ottawa.
Should I call a technician or just replace the appliance?
If the appliance is under ten years old and the repair is under half the replacement cost, repair almost always wins. Our technician will tell you plainly when it does not.
