What is under the glass

A glass top stove (also called a smooth-top, ceramic, radiant or “flat top” stove) is an electric range with a sheet of ceramic glass over radiant heating elements. Each element is a coil of ribbon wire in a ceramic dish with a limiter switch on top that cycles the element to protect the glass from overheating. The knobs or the touch panel run through an infinite switch or an electronic control that feeds each element. Because the glass hides everything, homeowners often assume the whole cooktop has failed when a single $60 part has. The diagnostic pulls the top and tests each element and switch individually, which is how a “dead cooktop” usually turns into a one-part repair.

One burner will not heat. The most common call. Almost always the radiant element itself (the ribbon breaks at one point), the limiter on top of it, or the infinite switch behind the knob. Burner cycles on and off constantly. Radiant elements are meant to cycle, but a burner that clicks off every few seconds at maximum and never boils water has a weak limiter or a switch that is dropping out. On dual-ring and bridge elements, one ring failing produces a half-hot burner.

“Hot surface” light stays on. The indicator is driven by the limiter. If it stays lit when the glass is cold, the limiter has failed; if it never lights, the same part or its wiring is at fault.

Touch panel not responding, locked padlock, error code. Touch controls fail from moisture and grease creeping under the glass, from a boil-over shorting the membrane, or from a control board that has lost a segment. A child-lock icon that will not clear is often a stuck key rather than a failure. Cracked, chipped or scratched glass. A crack in the ceramic glass is a repair, not a cosmetic issue: liquids reach the elements and wiring below, and a crack can grow across the top with each heat cycle. Stop using the cooktop until it is replaced. On most ranges the glass top is a single part that swaps with the elements re-fitted underneath; on many built-in cooktops the glass and frame come as one assembly. Looking after a glass top so it lasts

Wipe sugar spills (jam, syrup, candy) as soon as the burner is cool enough to touch. Sugar bonds to hot ceramic glass and pits it.
Lift pots rather than sliding them; cast iron and stoneware with rough bases scratch the surface.
Use flat-bottomed pans that match the burner size. A warped pan or a small pan on a large burner makes the limiter cycle constantly and cooks slowly.
Never use the cooktop as a shelf. Most cracked tops we replace were hit by a dropped pot lid or a heavy pan set down hard, not by heat.
Clean with a ceramic cooktop cleaner and a razor scraper held flat; abrasive pads dull the surface and hide cracks.
