Why “plug it in and push it back” is not a fridge installation
A refrigerator looks like the simplest appliance in the house to set up: wheel it in, plug it in, done. Yet a large share of the fridge service calls we take in Ottawa in the first year of a new unit are installation problems, not defects. Doors that will not stay closed because the cabinet was never levelled. A water line to the ice maker that was pushed on with a plastic saddle valve and started weeping into the subfloor six months later. A built-in that cannot breathe because the clearances at the top and sides were ignored, so the compressor runs constantly and the food in the door shelves is never quite cold. And, in the worst cases, a fridge laid on its side in the truck and switched on immediately, which sends compressor oil into the refrigerant lines and shortens the life of the sealed system.
A proper installation takes about an hour, protects the manufacturer warranty, and means the fridge does what it should for fifteen years instead of five. That is worth more than the delivery crew’s two minutes at the door.
What a B&M refrigerator installation includes
- Removal and disconnection of the old fridge. We shut off and cap the old water line, unplug the unit, and move it out without gouging hardwood or tile. Tell us when you book if you want it hauled away.
- Clearance and fit check. We measure the opening against the model’s ventilation clearances, check that the doors will open fully against adjacent walls and cabinets, and confirm the fridge actually fits through the hallway and doorways on the way in. Older Glebe, Westboro and Sandy Hill homes with narrow kitchen doors are where this matters most.
- Settling time after delivery. If the fridge was transported on its side, we let it stand upright for the period the manufacturer specifies before it is switched on, so compressor oil returns where it belongs.
- Levelling. The front feet are adjusted so the cabinet is level side to side and tilted slightly back, which is what makes the doors swing closed on their own and seal properly.
- Water line for ice maker and dispenser. We run a proper quarter-inch line with a real shut-off valve on the supply, not a self-piercing saddle valve, connect it to the fridge’s inlet, and flush the line before the first ice is made. If the kitchen has no water line nearby, we tell you the options before we start.
- Door swing and handles. On models that allow it, we reverse the door swing to suit the kitchen layout and fit the handles.
- Start-up and test. We power the unit, confirm the compressor starts, set the temperatures, run the water dispenser and ice maker until the line is clear, and check every fitting for drips before we leave.
Freestanding, counter-depth, built-in and garage fridges
Freestanding top-freezer and bottom-freezer models are the most straightforward. French-door and side-by-side units almost always have an ice maker and dispenser, so the water line is the main work. Counter-depth fridges are unforgiving on clearances: an inch too little at the back and the unit sticks out past the cabinets. Built-in and integrated refrigerators from Sub-Zero, Thermador, Miele and Fisher & Paykel need anti-tip brackets, panel alignment and precise levelling against the cabinetry, and the door hinges must be adjusted for the panel weight. Garage and basement chest freezers need a dedicated outlet and, in an unheated Ottawa garage, a model rated for cold ambient temperatures, or the compressor will not run in January. If you are unsure which category yours falls into, call and we will ask the right questions.
Replacing a fridge that stopped cooling? Get a second opinion first
Not every warm fridge is dead. A failed evaporator fan, a blocked defrost drain or a bad start relay is a repair measured in the low hundreds, not a replacement. Our fridge not cooling in Ottawa page lists the common causes, and our repair versus replace guide for fridges explains when replacement genuinely makes sense. The diagnostic visit is $89 + tax for residential customers ($129 + tax commercial), and if the technician confirms the sealed system is gone, you can book the replacement installation with the same crew. See refrigerator repair in Ottawa for typical repair pricing.
Honest, up-front pricing
Every installation is priced in writing before work begins. The quote depends on the model, whether an old fridge must be removed, whether a water line has to be run or extended, and whether the door swing needs reversing. There are no surprise add-ons once the technician is behind the unit. After 9 PM and before 7 AM a $100 flat emergency fee applies on top of regular rates. Addresses more than 30 km from downtown Ottawa may carry a travel charge, confirmed when you book. Commercial refrigeration, walk-in coolers and restaurant reach-ins are handled under our commercial service at the $129 + tax commercial rate.
Every installation carries a 3-month warranty on parts and labour. If a water fitting we made drips or a door we adjusted stops sealing in that window, we come back at no charge.

Where we install refrigerators
All of Ottawa: Kanata, Barrhaven, Nepean, Orléans, Gloucester, Stittsville, Westboro, the Glebe, Sandy Hill, Beacon Hill, Manotick and Cumberland. On the Quebec side, Hull, Aylmer, Buckingham and Masson-Angers are covered by the same bilingual crew; see appliance installation in Gatineau.
Getting ready for the technician
Empty the old fridge, or at least have coolers ready, since the swap takes about an hour. Clear a path from the front door to the kitchen and measure the narrowest doorway if the new fridge is a large French-door model. Leave the old fridge connected so we can see the existing water line. If there is no water line and you want ice and water, tell the dispatcher so we bring the fittings. Outfitting a whole kitchen? We can connect the fridge, dishwasher and range in one visit, and laundry too: see washer and dryer installation in Ottawa.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a fridge installation take?
A straightforward swap takes 45 to 60 minutes. Adding a water line for the ice maker, reversing the doors, or fitting a built-in with panels can take two hours or more.
Can you run a water line for the ice maker?
Yes. We run a proper quarter-inch line with a real shut-off valve, connect it and flush it. We do not use self-piercing saddle valves, which are the most common source of slow leaks under Ottawa kitchens.
My new fridge was delivered on its side. Can I plug it in?
Wait. Let it stand upright for the period in the manual, typically several hours, so compressor oil settles back before start-up. Starting it immediately can shorten the compressor’s life. We build that wait into the installation schedule.
Can you install a fridge I bought from another retailer?
Yes. We install refrigerators and freezers from any store, big-box, local or online.
What does a refrigerator installation cost?
Installations are quoted in writing before any work starts, based on the model, water line and old-unit removal. If you want a failing fridge assessed first, the diagnostic visit is $89 + tax residential and $129 + tax commercial.
Is the installation guaranteed?
Yes. Every installation carries a 3-month warranty on parts and labour, the same guarantee we give on repairs.
