Washer not spinning in Gatineau? What stops the spin

Every modern washer checks three conditions before it spins: the water must be out (the drain pump has emptied the tub and the pressure switch agrees), the door or lid must be locked, and the load must be balanced within limits. If any of those fails, the control refuses to spin and the wash simply ends wet, often with no error shown.

That is why “washer not spinning” is so often a drain or lock problem rather than a motor problem, and why our diagnosis starts by finding out which of the three conditions the machine is stuck on.

It isn’t draining, so it won’t spin

Coins, hair clips, socks and lint in the drain pump filter, a kinked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. If water is still in the drum when the cycle ends, this is the fault. See washer not draining (in French: laveuse qui ne vidange pas).

Door lock or lid switch

On a front-loader the door lock assembly must engage and report “locked.” When it wears out, the machine washes but skips the spin, or shows a door error such as dE, dL, F5 or dc. On a top-loader the lid switch or lid lock does the same job, and a top-loader that agitates but won’t spin is the classic lid-switch symptom. Both are inexpensive parts.

Unbalanced load or worn suspension

A single heavy item such as a bath mat or a duvet sits on one side: the washer tries, stops, redistributes and gives up. If it happens with every load, the suspension rods (top-load) or the shock absorbers and springs (front-load) have worn and the drum can no longer balance itself. See washer shaking.

Drive belt

On belt-drive machines, a belt that has stretched, glazed or snapped lets the motor run while the drum stays still. It is common on older top-loaders and on some front-loaders.

Motor, motor coupler or clutch

Direct-drive top-loaders use a small plastic coupler between the motor and the transmission that shears when the machine is overloaded: the washer hums but nothing moves. A worn clutch on the same design agitates but spins slowly. On direct-drive front-loaders such as LG and Samsung, a failed hall sensor or rotor position sensor stops the motor from finding its speed.

Control board or motor control

If the drain, lock and balance are all good and the motor tests good, the board that drives the motor is next. We test the board before replacing it.

Bearings

A washer that spins slowly with a roar, or squeals on the spin and leaves grey marks on clothes, has a failing tub bearing. It keeps spinning for a while. See washer making noise.

The technician reads the stored fault codes and runs a drain-and-spin test, then checks the pump and filter, the pressure switch or sensor and its hose, the door lock or lid switch, the belt, the motor and its sensors, the suspension, the bearing and the control board’s motor output. On a top-loader the coupler, clutch and transmission are checked as well. You hear the finding in plain language and see a written quote before anything is replaced.

Locks, switches, belts, pumps and couplers are small repairs on a washer less than twelve years old and are clearly worth doing.
