A washer will not spin until three things are true

Every modern washer checks three conditions before it spins: the water must be out (the drain pump has emptied the tub and the pressure switch agrees), the door or lid must be locked, and the load must be balanced within limits. If any of those fails, the control refuses to spin and the wash simply ends wet, often with no error shown. That is why “washer not spinning” is so often a drain problem or a lock problem rather than a motor problem, and why the diagnostic starts by finding out which of the three conditions the machine is stuck on.

The causes, from most to least common

It is not draining, so it will not spin. Coins, hair clips, socks and lint in the drain pump filter; a kinked drain hose; a failed drain pump. If there is still water in the drum when the cycle ends, this is the fault. See washer not draining and, en français, laveuse qui ne vidange pas.

Door lock or lid switch. On a front-loader the door lock assembly must engage and report “locked”; when it wears out the machine washes but skips the spin, or shows a door error (dE, dL, F5, dc). On a top-loader the lid switch or lid lock does the same job; a top-loader that agitates but will not spin is the classic lid switch symptom. Both are inexpensive parts we carry.

Unbalanced load, or the suspension is gone. A single heavy item (a bath mat, a duvet) sits on one side and the washer tries, stops, redistributes and gives up. If it happens with every load, the suspension rods (top-load) or shock absorbers and springs (front-load) have worn, and the drum can no longer balance itself. See washer shaking.

Drive belt (belt-drive machines). A belt that has stretched, glazed or snapped: the motor runs, you hear it, the drum does not turn. Common on older top-loaders and on some front-loaders.

Motor, motor coupler or clutch. Direct-drive top-loaders use a small plastic coupler between motor and transmission that shears when the machine is overloaded; the washer hums but nothing moves. A worn clutch on the same design agitates but spins slowly. On direct-drive front-loaders (LG, Samsung) a failed hall sensor or rotor position sensor stops the motor from finding its speed.

Control board or motor control. If the drain, lock and balance are all good and the motor tests good, the board that drives the motor is next. The board is tested before it is replaced.

Bearings. A washer that spins slowly with a roar, or squeals on the spin and leaves grey marks, has a failing tub bearing. It still spins, for a while. See washer making noise.

Three checks before you book

Is there water left in the drum? If yes, clean the pump filter (bottom front door on most front-loaders; have towels ready) and check the drain hose for a kink. If the washer then spins, you have saved a service call.
Redistribute the load and run a drain-and-spin only. If a balanced load spins and a normal load does not, the suspension is worn.
Listen at the start of the spin. A click and then nothing points at the lock; a hum with no movement points at the belt, coupler or motor; a spin that starts and stops repeatedly points at balance or the sensor.
