Short answer

Most leaking washers in Gatineau have one worn part, and the moment the water appears points to it. During the fill, suspect a supply hose or the inlet valve; during the wash, the door boot, the dispenser or too many suds; during the drain, the drain hose or pump; only on the spin, the tub seal. Turn off both taps, note the timing, try a small dose of HE detergent and book a diagnosis if it still leaks.

01Before you book

Safe checks first

Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.

  1. Shut off the supplyClose both taps behind the washer and unplug it, or switch off its breaker, before you look underneath.
  2. Feel the hosesWith the taps back on, run a hand along both supply hoses and around their fittings. A drip at a fitting is usually the hose or the small rubber washer inside it.
  3. Check the detergentOn a front-loader, use HE detergent and a small dose. Foamy water at the door or the dispenser is often suds, not a broken part.
  4. Look at the standpipeMake sure the drain hose is clipped in place and not pushed too far down the standpipe, which can make the standpipe overflow.
  5. Note the timingWrite down whether the water appears during the fill, the wash, the drain or the spin. It tells the technician where to start.

Stop using it if you notice

  • Water has reached a wall, a baseboard or the ceiling below
  • Water pooling under the machine near the motor or controls
  • Rusty water under a top-loader with a loud spin
  • A burning smell, or the breaker trips

Turn off the taps, unplug the washer and keep it out of use until it has been checked. Then call 613-301-0016.

02Protect your home

First, stop the water in your Gatineau laundry room

A leaking washer is cheap to fix and expensive to ignore. In many Gatineau two-storey homes the laundry room is upstairs, so a leak can reach the ceiling of the room below before anyone notices. If water has touched a wall, a baseboard or a ceiling, get towels and a fan on it today: a soaked subfloor costs far more than the washer repair.

Once the taps are off and the machine is unplugged, think back to when the water appeared. That single detail usually tells us where to look before the technician removes a panel, and it shortens the diagnosis.

03Common causes

Where washers leak, by when the water shows up

During the fill: hoses and the inlet valve

Rubber supply hoses harden and crack with age, and their fittings loosen when a washer walks on the spin. The inlet valve inside the cabinet can crack or weep at its solenoids. Water at the back of the machine as soon as a cycle starts almost always comes from one of these. We recommend braided stainless hoses whenever we are there: a burst rubber hose is the most expensive washer failure a homeowner can have, because of the water it releases.

During the wash: door boot, dispenser or suds

On a front-loader, the large rubber bellows around the opening (the door boot) tears at its fold, or a coin or bra wire punctures it, and water runs down the front of the machine. The detergent drawer can clog and overflow at the top left. Too much detergent, or regular detergent in an HE front-loader, builds a cushion of suds that pushes water out of the dispenser and past the door seal even when nothing is broken. If the water is foamy, try a single dose of HE detergent before you book.

During the drain: drain hose and pump

The drain hose can split, come loose, or jump out of the standpipe if it is not clipped. The drain pump housing can crack, and the filter cap behind the small door at the bottom front of most front-loaders can be left loose after a cleaning. Water under the machine at the end of the wash points here. If it is also slow to drain, see washer not draining or, en français, laveuse qui ne vidange pas.

Only on the spin: tub seal, outer tub or an unbalanced load

A leak that appears only at high speed, from underneath, is often the tub seal where the drive shaft passes through the outer tub, the hose between the tub and the pump, or the outer tub itself. On a top-loader the tub seal and bearing usually fail together; the tell-tale signs are rusty water under the machine and a loud spin. On a front-loader, a badly unbalanced load can slosh water over the top of the tub on one spin without anything being broken.

A wet wall behind the washer

This is usually the standpipe overflowing, either because the drain hose is pushed too far down or because the house drain is partly blocked with lint. The washer is innocent in that case, and we will tell you so.

04The visit

What the leak diagnosis covers in Gatineau

The technician runs the washer through a full cycle, with panels off where possible, and watches where the water goes. The check covers both supply hoses and the inlet valve under pressure, the door boot and its clamps, the dispenser and its hoses, the drain hose and standpipe, the pump housing, filter cap and hose clamps, the tub seal and outer tub, and the levelling feet. On a top-loader the focus is the tub seal, the bearing and the drain hose.

You get the finding in plain language and a written quote before any part is replaced. In the meantime, don’t keep running a washer that leaks from below: the water finds the motor and the control board.

07Repair or replace

Is a leaking washer worth repairing?

Hoses, valves, pumps and door boots are inexpensive parts on any washer under about twelve years old, and repairing them makes sense against the $900 to $1,500 cost of a new machine. The leak that changes the math is a tub bearing and seal on an older front-loader: the job is labour-heavy, and on a machine over ten years old it can approach half the price of a replacement. Our repair or replace a washer guide sets this out by age and fault. If you do replace it, appliance installation in Gatineau can handle new hoses, levelling and stacking kits.

Questions, answered

Something else? Call and ask.

613-301-0016
Why is my front-load washer leaking from the door?

Usually the rubber door boot has a tear or a hole, the glass is dirty where it meets the seal, or too much detergent is making suds. Check the fold of the seal for debris and try one small dose of HE detergent; if it still leaks, the boot needs replacing.

Why is my washer leaking from underneath?

Underneath points to the pump, the pump hoses, the tub seal or the outer tub. Water only on the spin suggests the tub seal; water at the end of the wash suggests the pump. Stop using it until it is checked, because water under the machine reaches the motor and controls.

How much does a leaking washer repair cost in Gatineau?

The residential diagnostic is $89 + tax and is applied toward the repair. Hoses, valves, pumps and door boots typically land between $150 and $400 for parts and labour; a tub bearing and seal costs more, and you get the written quote before deciding.

Can I keep using a washer that leaks a little?

No. Tighten a dripping hose fitting or replace the hose first. A leak from the door or underneath only gets worse, and the water damages the floor and the machine’s electronics.

Can you come to Hull or Aylmer the same day?

A same-day visit is possible when the schedule allows, but it is never guaranteed. Send a request online at any time; it becomes an appointment once we call or text to confirm a time window of about three hours.

Do you charge extra to cross from Ottawa to Gatineau?

No. Hull, Aylmer and central Gatineau are inside our standard service area at the same $89 + tax residential diagnostic, with no travel charge.
