Electric or gas? The fault list is different

Most ovens in Gatineau homes are electric, part of a freestanding range on a 240-volt circuit. A smaller number are gas ranges or dual-fuel units. The symptom “oven not heating” is the same, but the parts behind it are not, so the first thing we ask when you book is which you have. If the burners on top are coils or a glass surface, it is electric; if they have a flame, it is gas or dual-fuel.

Electric ovens: why they stop heating

Bake element burned out. The most common cause. The lower element develops a blister or a break, often visible as a bright spot or a burn mark. The oven will still broil (a separate upper element) and the light works. A same-visit part for every major brand.

Broil element out, bake works. The mirror case, and why an oven can “half work”.

Temperature sensor out of range. The thin probe at the back top of the cavity. When it drifts, the control either never calls for heat or shows an F-code (F1, F2, F3, F30, F31 depending on brand). It is tested with a meter and is an inexpensive part.

Only 120 volts reaching the range. An electric range needs both legs of a 240-volt circuit. If one leg drops (one pole of the double breaker, a burned wire at the outlet or terminal block), the clock, light and burner indicator work and the elements do not. Reset the breaker fully off and on before you call; if it recurs, the outlet or cord needs attention.

Control board relay or oven selector switch. On electronic ranges the board’s bake relay can fail; on older ranges the mechanical selector or thermostat. Both are tested before they are replaced.

Thermal fuse or high-limit tripped. Often after a self-clean cycle. Some fuses reset, some do not; either way the reason it tripped (usually a blocked vent or a cooling fan) is checked at the same time. See oven not self-cleaning.

Door lock engaged. A lock that thinks the oven is still in self-clean will not allow bake. Usually a lock motor or switch.

Gas ovens: why they stop heating

Weak or failed igniter. The glow-bar igniter must draw enough current to open the safety valve. When it weakens with age, it glows but the burner never lights, or takes several minutes to catch. This is the single most common gas oven repair. See gas oven repair for the full sequence.

Safety valve, thermostat or control. The valve opens late or not at all; the thermostat or board never calls for heat. Each is timed and tested rather than guessed.

Gas supply. A shut-off valve left half-closed after the stove was moved, or a supply issue affecting the burners on top too. Every gas call includes a leak test.

Two checks before you book

  1. Breaker and clock. Reset the range’s double breaker fully off and on, set the clock if it is flashing (many ranges will not bake while the clock is unset), and make sure the oven is not in Sabbath or demo mode.
  2. Look at the bake element. On an electric oven, set bake at 200 degrees and look through the door after two minutes. A dark lower element while the upper glows on broil means the bake element or its circuit. A visible blister or break is the element itself.

What the diagnostic covers in Gatineau

The technician measures the voltage at the terminal block, tests the bake and broil elements (or on gas, times the igniter with an ammeter and leak-tests the connections), checks the temperature sensor against a reference thermometer, tests the thermal fuse, high-limit and door lock, checks the control’s relay outputs and reads any stored codes, and checks the door gasket and hinges. The cooktop is checked at the same visit. You get the finding in plain language and a firm quote before anything is replaced.

Repair or replace an oven that will not heat?

An element, sensor or igniter on an oven under twelve years old is one of the best-value repairs in the house: a modest part on an appliance that routinely lasts fifteen to twenty years. A control board on a discontinued model, a cracked oven liner, or a door, hinges, gasket and element all worn together are the cases that favour replacement. Our repair or replace an oven guide sets out the decision by age. If you replace, appliance installation in Gatineau handles the electrical or gas hook-up and the anti-tip bracket.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my oven turn on but not heat up?

On an electric oven it is usually the bake element, the temperature sensor or one leg of the 240-volt supply. On a gas oven it is usually a weak igniter. The light and display run on 120 volts, which is why they work while the heat does not.

How much does it cost to fix an oven that will not heat in Gatineau?

The service call is $89 + tax residential ($129 + tax commercial, and $129 + tax for gas). An element, sensor or igniter repair typically lands between $150 and $350 for parts and labour; a control board can be more. You get a firm quote first.

My oven stopped heating after self-clean. Why?

Self-clean runs the oven far hotter than baking, and it is the most common trigger for a thermal fuse, a high-limit thermostat or a door lock fault. The part is replaced and the reason it tripped is checked.

Can I replace the bake element myself?

On many ranges it is two screws and a plug, but the range must be unplugged or its breaker off, and a burned element is often a symptom of a relay or a wiring fault behind it. If you are not comfortable, it is a quick and inexpensive call for us.

Do you repair gas ovens in Gatineau?

Yes. Gas ovens are $129 + tax for the diagnostic, which includes a leak test and the timed ignition check. Gas work requires certified gas handling and that is how every gas call is done.

Do you come to Hull and Aylmer the same day?

Yes. Same-day service is available across Gatineau and Ottawa when scheduling allows. Call before 1 PM for the best chance.
