First: stop the water

Turn off both taps behind the washer and unplug it, or switch off its breaker. If water has reached a wall, baseboard or the ceiling of the room below (common in Gatineau’s two-storey homes where the laundry is upstairs), get towels and a fan on it today; a leak that soaks a subfloor costs far more than the washer repair. Then note when the water appears: during the fill, during the wash, during the drain, or only on the spin. That timing tells us where to look before the technician opens anything.

Where washers leak, by when the water shows up

During the fill: hoses and the inlet valve. The rubber supply hoses behind the machine harden and crack with age, and the fittings loosen when the washer walks. The inlet valve inside the machine can crack or weep at its solenoids. Water at the back of the machine that appears as soon as a cycle starts is almost always one of these. We recommend braided stainless hoses on every visit; a burst rubber hose is the single most expensive washer failure a homeowner can have.

During the wash: the door boot, the dispenser or over-sudsing. On a front-loader, the big rubber bellows (door boot) around the opening tears at the fold or gets a coin or bra wire through it, and water runs down the front of the machine. The detergent dispenser drawer can clog and overflow at the top left. And too much detergent, or a non-HE detergent in a front-loader, makes a suds cushion that pushes water out the dispenser and the door seal even when nothing is broken. If the water is foamy, try one dose of HE detergent before you call.

During the drain: the drain hose and the pump. The drain hose can split, come loose from the standpipe, or push out of the standpipe if it is not clipped. The drain pump housing can crack, or the pump filter cap (behind the little door at the bottom front of most front-loaders) can be loose after someone cleaned it. Only on the spin: the tub seal, the tub or an unbalanced load. A leak that appears only at high speed, from underneath, is often the tub-to-pump seal or the outer tub itself. On a top-loader the tub seal and bearing fail together, and the tell-tale is rusty water under the machine plus a loud spin. On a front-loader a badly unbalanced load can slosh water over the top of the tub on a single spin without anything being broken.

Wet wall behind the washer. Usually the standpipe overflowing because the drain hose is pushed too far down, or a house drain that is partly blocked with lint. The washer is innocent in that case, and we tell you so.

Two checks before you book

Look at the hoses with the taps on. Run a hand along both supply hoses and around the fittings. A drip you can feel at a fitting is a hose or a washer inside the fitting, and it is a small job.
