Repair or replace your oven or range in Ottawa?

Oven not heating, a range with a dead burner, cracked cooktop glass, or a wall oven showing an error code? This guide sets out the reasoning B&M Canada Appliances follows when a technician is in a kitchen in Kanata, Barrhaven, Westboro or Aylmer and owes you a straight answer. In short, cooking appliances are cheap to repair and expensive to replace, so “repair” wins more often here than for any other kitchen appliance.

The rule itself: replace when the repair would cost more than half of a comparable new unit. For cooking appliances that line sits high in dollars. A mid-range freestanding electric range in Ottawa runs roughly $1,000 to $1,800 new, a gas or induction range more, and a built-in wall oven or cooktop several times that once the cabinet work is counted. The parts that fail (elements, igniters, sensors, switches, receptacles, hinges, gaskets) are among the cheapest in the house, and an oven has almost nothing to wear out mechanically. A well-kept range runs fifteen to twenty years, and wall ovens often longer.

• Temperature sensor or thermostat (runs hot or cold, long preheat, error code). See oven temperature problems.

Control board or touch panel. The most expensive electronic part. On a range under twelve years it is still clearly worth it. On an older one, check availability first (some boards are discontinued) and look at what else is worn. On a wall oven it is usually still worth it, because of what replacement involves.

Cracked ceramic cooktop glass. The glass is a large part and on some models comes with the elements attached. On a range under ten years, repair; past that, compare, because a cracked top usually means the range has had a hard life.

Gas valve or manifold. Uncommon and not cheap; age decides. Gas work is diagnosed at the $129 + tax gas-appliance rate and done by our TSSA-certified technicians in Ontario; on the Quebec side, gas service is confirmed when you book. A wall oven or drop-in cooktop is not just an appliance; it is fitted to a cabinet cut-out. Cut-out sizes and trim styles have changed over the years, so replacing a fifteen-year-old wall oven often means a carpenter as well as an installer, and a new cooktop may not fit the existing opening in a quartz counter. Reasons to replace

1. A discontinued board on an old range. Ask whether the board is still available before you approve the quote; if it is gone, that decides it.
2. Two expensive faults at once, such as a board and cooktop glass, on a freestanding range past twelve years.
3. A cracked oven liner or a rusted-through cabinet. Structural faults are not worth chasing.
4. A kitchen change you were planning anyway: switching to induction, adding a double oven, or moving from a range to a cooktop and wall oven. Reasons to repair

1. The fault is on the “nearly always pay off” list. That describes most oven and range calls.
2. It is a built-in. See above.
3. It is a simple electric coil range or a well-built older gas range. These stay repairable for decades, and the parts are everywhere.
4. Delivery, haul-away and hook-up. A new range needs the right cord, an anti-tip bracket and, for gas, a certified hook-up; the sticker is not the whole price.

The technician finds the fault, checks the elements or burners, the sensor, the door and the controls for wear, and confirms that parts are available. You get a written repair quote alongside a realistic price for a comparable new unit, then decide for yourself. Because we install ranges as well as repair them, we have no reason to push you either way.

Diagnostic fees are $89 + tax for an electric range or oven, and $129 + tax for gas ranges and ovens and for commercial equipment. The $89 residential fee is applied toward the approved repair if you proceed; whichever fee applies, it covers the visit and the assessment if you replace instead. Each repair has a 3-month warranty on parts and labour. Between 9 PM and 7 AM a $100 flat after-hours fee is added, and homes more than 30 km from downtown Ottawa may have a travel charge, which we confirm at booking.

GE and Frigidaire ranges are the workhorses of Barrhaven, Kanata and Orléans kitchens and cheap to keep going.
