If a top-loader keeps showing Sd, switch to an HE detergent and use less of it before booking; the washer adds rinse time to clear the suds. Exact meanings vary by model and generation, so the technician confirms each code with tests.

When an older direct-drive Maytag top-loader fills and the motor runs but nothing moves, the classic cause is the drive coupler, a small plastic-and-rubber part that links the motor shaft to the transmission. It is designed to break before the transmission does, so its failure protects the more expensive part. Worn agitator dogs give a different symptom: the top half of the agitator spins freely or turns only one way. Both are quick repairs. On Bravos XL and other newer impeller models, the lid lock and the shift actuator are the more likely culprits.

Odours and drips from the door seal are the most common Maxima complaint: lint and detergent residue collect in the fold of the door boot, and an old boot eventually tears and is replaced. A drain pump that hums without draining usually has a coin or hair tie caught in the impeller. A rumble that grows louder through the spin cycle means the drum bearings are wearing; on an older machine we’ll tell you honestly whether that labour-heavy repair is worth it. The residential diagnostic is $89 + tax: a full on-site diagnosis and a written repair quote, with the fee applied toward the repair if you go ahead. Commercial equipment is $129 + tax. Parts and labour are billed only for a repair you approve, and the work carries a 3-month warranty on parts and labour (ask for the written terms).
