Fridge repair cost in Gatineau

The ranges below are the ones we see most often for the common brands (Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Bosch, Kenmore), parts and labour included. They are typical ranges rather than a quote, and the exact price is set in writing after the diagnosis.

• Thermostat / temperature control: typically $150–$300, for a fridge that is too warm, too cold or swings.
• Start relay or capacitor: typically $150–$280, when the compressor clicks but will not start.
• Evaporator or condenser fan motor: typically $200–$350, for a cold freezer with a warm fridge, or a noisy fan.
• Defrost heater, thermostat or control board: typically $200–$400, when ice builds on the back wall and the fridge warms up.
• Door gasket / seal: typically $200–$350, for sweating, frost or a fridge that runs constantly.
• Compressor or sealed-system repair: not priced here. A fridge that runs but never cools, or a dead compressor, needs the $159 + tax sealed-system diagnostic first; the labour is then quoted by phone.

A warm fridge is treated as urgent, so same-day visits are offered whenever the schedule allows.

At home, the service call costs $89 + tax. It covers the visit and a full diagnosis of the cooling system (temperatures, fans, defrost circuit, condenser and door seals), followed by a written quote; the $89 counts toward the repair if you approve it. Commercial refrigeration is $129 + tax; on a household fridge, sealed-system faults have their own $159 + tax diagnostic.

The failed part matters most: a $30 start relay and a sealed-system repair both present as “fridge not cooling” until the diagnosis, and they sit at opposite ends of the bill. The type of fridge matters too: a French-door unit with an ice maker in the door and a dual evaporator has more that can fail, and its parts cost more, than a top-freezer. Built-in and premium brands (Sub-Zero, Viking, Thermador, some Bosch and Miele) use dearer parts and longer labour.

Access matters a little for built-in and counter-depth units in tight cabinetry. Age doesn’t change the price of a part, but it does change our advice on whether to fix it.

On a $2,000 refrigerator, a fan or defrost repair of about $200 is an easy call. A failed compressor on a twelve-year-old fridge is where we stop and talk. Our usual guideline: if the fridge is younger than ten and the repair is below half the replacement cost, fix it.

Two seasons bring a surge of fridge calls on the Quebec side. In a humid July, a tired door gasket or a dusty condenser lets a fridge that coped all spring fall behind, and the complaint is “warm at the top, fine at the bottom”. In January, fridges in unheated garages and cold basements in Aylmer and Buckingham stop running because the thermostat never calls for cooling, and the freezer thaws while the fridge stays cold.

Neither is a compressor, and both sit in the low-to-mid price bracket. If your fridge misbehaves with the season, say so when you book and the technician will start there.

1. Vacuum the condenser coils twice a year. Dusty coils overwork the compressor and cause many of the failures on this page.
2. Call early. A fridge that is “a bit warm” is a fan or a defrost part; a fridge that has been struggling for a month can take the compressor with it.
3. Have the model number ready (inside the fresh-food compartment), so we can look up the right relay or fan before the visit.
4. Do not stack the freezer to the ceiling. Blocked vents between the compartments mimic a defrost fault.
