Stove and range repair in Carleton Place

Carleton Place is growing faster than almost anywhere on Highway 7, and the ranges that went into its new subdivisions are now aging into their first out-of-warranty failures together. On a range that is five to ten years old, the parts that give out first are usually glass-top radiant elements, oven temperature sensors, touch-panel membranes, relays on the control board and convection fan motors.

If your range came with the house, look for the model and serial number in the builder’s paperwork or on the label inside the storage drawer. If it may still be under the manufacturer’s warranty, check with the manufacturer first, since that repair may be covered. Once the warranty has run out, builder-grade ranges from the common brands are straightforward to repair, because their parts are widely available.

The mill-town century homes downtown and along the Mississippi riverfront keep older ranges working in tighter kitchens. Older coil-top stoves tend to fail at the burner receptacles, where the terminals scorch over time, or at the infinite switches behind the control knobs. Both are inexpensive parts.

Slide-in ranges and wall ovens sometimes have to come out of the cabinet so the technician can reach the wiring or the back panel. If yours is fitted tightly, mention it when you book. When a freestanding range is pushed back into place, the anti-tip bracket must be re-engaged so the range can’t tip forward.

• Oven won’t reach temperature: a weak bake element, a worn gas igniter or a sensor that has drifted well away from the setting. We measure the real temperature rather than trusting the display.
• Burner or element dead: coil elements, radiant elements under the glass, switches and receptacles.
• Oven quit after self-clean: self-clean heat often takes out a thermal fuse or a door-lock assembly, and it is fixable.
• Error codes or a blank display: control boards, keypads and sensors, tested before anything is quoted.
• Convection fan silent or noisy: the fan motor or its control.
