In-home appliance repair for Smiths Falls
When a fridge quits or a dryer stops heating in Smiths Falls, the last thing you want is a week-long wait, or loading the appliance into a truck and hauling it into the city. B&M Canada Appliances repairs it where it stands, across Smiths Falls, the Rideau Lakes area and the wider Lanark County, and quotes the repair in writing before any work begins.
Living in a smaller town shouldn’t mean second-tier service. Since 1995 we have repaired appliances across the National Capital Region and the Ottawa Valley, and Smiths Falls households get the same approach: a full diagnosis, a straight explanation, and three months of warranty on parts and labour once the repair is done. Service is in English or French.
03Canal-town homes
Heritage houses near the canal, newer builds at the edge of town
Smiths Falls homes run the full range. Heritage houses near the Rideau Canal often still have older top-mount fridges and basic electric ranges, while newer builds come with high-efficiency front-load washers and smart French-door refrigerators. We have been repairing appliances for more than 30 years, from simpler older machines to the latest control boards and inverter compressors, so either kind gets a proper diagnosis.
The older the appliance, the more the repair-or-replace question matters. A worn belt, element or door switch on a sturdy older machine is usually worth fixing; a failed compressor on a fridge near the end of its life often isn’t. When the repair would cost more than the appliance is worth, you hear that from us before any money is spent on parts. Our appliance lifespan guide and fridge repair-or-replace guide are good starting points.
04Hard water
Hard water and well water around Smiths Falls
Well water and hard water are common in the area, and they wear on dishwashers, washers and the water-line parts of fridges, so our technicians check for scale and sediment damage as part of the diagnosis, not as an afterthought. Typical signs are a washer or dishwasher that fills slowly or stops with a fill error, a white film on glasses that extra soap doesn’t fix, a fridge dispenser that trickles, and an ice maker that makes small, hollow cubes or none at all.
Most of these come down to a clogged inlet valve screen, a scaled heating element or spray arm, or an overdue water filter. If your home has a softener or filtration system, mention it when you book; it helps the technician judge whether the water or the appliance is at the root of the problem.
05Fridges and freezers
Smiths Falls refrigerator and freezer repair
Fridge warm, freezer cold or frosted
The cooling cycle has several parts, and usually only one has failed. Defrost comes first on the technician’s list: when the heater, bi-metal thermostat, sensor, or defrost timer or board stops working, frost buries the coil behind the freezer panel. That is one of the most common finds, and it can often be repaired during the visit. After that come the two fans, the start relay and the temperature controls.
Leaks, ice makers and noises
Everyday fridge repairs here include a puddle beneath the crisper drawers, an ice maker that has slowed or stopped, a water valve that drips or chatters, a door seal that has gone soft, and a fan or compressor that has become loud. French-door, side-by-side, top-mount, bottom-mount, built-in and panel-ready models are all covered, along with upright and chest freezers. A compressor or refrigerant fault is sealed-system work, diagnosed separately and quoted by phone; on an older unit, we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth it. See Smiths Falls fridge repair.
Chest or upright freezer warming up or icing over
Most chest freezers are manual-defrost, so some frost is normal, but a thick layer that returns quickly usually means the lid gasket no longer seals or the lid is being left ajar. A freezer that hums without getting cold, or runs constantly, needs its thermostat, condenser and start components tested. Keep the lid closed until the technician arrives; a full freezer stays cold much longer than a half-empty one.
06Laundry room
Laundry repairs in Smiths Falls: washers and dryers
Washer stopped with water in the tub
It feels like a disaster, but it is one of the most fixable faults. Look along the drain path first: small items such as socks and coins jam the pump, filters clog, hoses kink behind the machine, and drain pumps eventually wear out.
Washer won’t spin, bangs or leaks
A washer that won’t spin is tested at the drive belt or motor coupler, the lid switch or door lock, and the motor control board. Loud banging on the spin cycle usually means the shocks, springs or drum bearings are worn. Water on the floor can come from the door boot, a fill hose, the detergent drawer, the pump or the tub seal, so we trace it to the source and fix that part instead of patching around it. We repair top-load, front-load, compact and stacked machines, washer-dryer combos included. A musty smell from a front-loader typically comes from lint and debris caught at the pump filter or mildew in the rubber door seal; cleaning both and leaving the door open between loads keeps it away. See Smiths Falls washer repair.
Dryer runs but clothes stay damp
Lint in the vent is the first suspect, because the overheating it causes often blows the thermal fuse. If the vent is clear, the heating element or a thermostat has usually burnt out, or on a gas dryer the igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coil has failed. If pressing start does nothing, the door switch, start switch, thermal fuse or control board is the likely cause; squeaks, grinding and thumps point to the drum rollers, belt or idler pulley. Gas and electric dryers, including stacked and compact models, are all repaired, and you’ll hear from the technician if the vent needs cleaning. See Smiths Falls dryer repair.
07Kitchen appliances
Dishwashers, stoves, microwaves and range hoods
Dishwasher puddles, film or dirty dishes
Each has a specific cause, and the technician works through them in order: filter and sump, then the drain pump and hose, the spray arms, the inlet valve, the heating element and the door seal. A unit that won’t start gets its door latch and control board tested. Most fixes involve a new drain or wash pump, inlet valve, gasket, latch, element or float switch, or simply clearing a blocked drain path. Write down any error code or beep pattern for your request. See Smiths Falls dishwasher repair.
Oven slow, uneven or cold
The usual causes are a bake or broil element that has burnt out, an oven sensor reading wrong, a relay stuck on the control board, or a self-clean lock that never released. Cooktop problems include elements that stay cold, infinite switches that stick, glass-top touch controls that crack or go unresponsive, and induction zones that no longer sense a pan. Gas, electric and induction models are all covered, whether freestanding, slide-in, wall-mounted or built-in. On gas units, our TSSA-certified technicians fix burners that don’t ignite, igniters that tick constantly, flames that run weak or patchy and ovens that won’t get hot. See Smiths Falls stove repair.
Gas smell? Everyone out first. Once you are outside, phone Enbridge Gas or your propane supplier, and let them make the home safe before you book a repair.
Microwave or range hood not working
An over-the-range microwave is also your hood, so when it fails, cooking and ventilation both stop. Typical parts are the magnetron, the high-voltage diode or capacitor, door switches, the turntable motor, the exhaust fan and the control board; on a standalone hood, it is usually the fan motor, a light or a switch. On a countertop unit, replacement often makes more sense, and we will say so up front.
08Fees and booking
Service-call fees and travel to Smiths Falls
In Smiths Falls, the residential service call is $109 + tax, and gas appliances and commercial equipment are $149 + tax. That fee buys a complete diagnosis and a written repair quote, and no repair goes ahead until you say yes to it. Smiths Falls is a long way past the 30 km line around downtown Ottawa, so a travel charge may be added; the amount is confirmed at booking. Night visits between 9 PM and 7 AM carry a $100 flat after-hours fee, and our emergency appliance repair page explains how after-hours calls work.
A request is not yet an appointment. Once it comes in, we get back to you by phone or text with a time slot about three hours wide and check the make and model, so the technician can bring the most likely parts. The model and serial numbers are on a rating plate: inside the fridge compartment, around the washer lid or door opening, inside the dryer door, on the edge of the dishwasher door, and behind the range’s storage drawer or on its back panel. Copy both numbers exactly, including any letters at the end, since they identify the parts that model uses. There is no pressure to approve the quote. After the visit you get a written diagnostic report, and the completed repair is warranted for 3 months, parts and labour included, with written terms on request. Brands range from Danby, Kenmore, Amana and Frigidaire to Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, LG and Samsung, and up to KitchenAid, Bosch, Miele, Electrolux, Jenn-Air, Fisher & Paykel and Blomberg. Appliances still under the manufacturer’s warranty should go to the manufacturer first.
