02Heritage to high-end

Westboro kitchens, from heritage homes to high-end builds

Westboro is a study in contrasts: tree-lined streets of early-1900s homes sitting next to sleek new condos and custom infills. That mix shows up in the appliances we repair. In the older homes we often work in tight galley kitchens and basement laundry with decades-old wiring and venting; in the new builds and condos near Westboro Village we see premium, integrated appliances: built-in refrigerators, panel-ready dishwashers, induction cooktops and ventilation hoods from Bosch, Miele, KitchenAid, Sub-Zero and Samsung.

Our technicians are comfortable with both. We handle cabinetry and custom panels carefully, and we diagnose on site so you get a clear written quote before any work begins. Westboro is well inside 30 km of downtown Ottawa, so no travel charge applies, and service is in English or French.

03Cooling and cleaning

Common appliance problems we fix in Westboro

Refrigerator not cooling or leaking

Usually an iced-over evaporator, a failed defrost heater or sensor, a stopped fan or a blocked defrost drain. On built-in and panel-ready fridges we work carefully around the custom panels.

A warm fridge is almost always one failed part rather than a worn-out appliance, so the technician tests the defrost heater, bi-metal thermostat, sensor and timer or board, both fans, the start relay and the controls. Ice packed over the coil behind the freezer panel is the classic sign of a defrost fault, often repairable during the visit. Water pooling under the crisper drawers, an ice maker that won’t fill or dispenses slowly, a leaking or buzzing water valve, a tired door gasket and a loud fan or compressor are the other everyday fridge repairs, on every layout from French-door and side-by-side to top-mount, bottom-mount, built-in and panel-ready, plus upright and chest freezers. When an older fridge’s compressor or sealed system is the problem, we tell you frankly whether to repair it; a sealed-system diagnosis costs $159 + tax, with the repair priced by phone.

Dishwasher not draining or cleaning

Clogged filters, a jammed drain pump, a failed inlet valve or blocked spray arms. Bosch and Miele dishwashers are regular repairs for us.

Whether it’s a puddle, a gritty film or dirty dishes, there is usually one identifiable cause, so the technician checks the filter, sump, drain pump, drain hose, spray arms, inlet valve, heating element and door seal, and on a unit that won’t start, the latch and control board. The parts we replace most are drain and circulation pumps, inlet valves, door gaskets and latches, heating elements and float switches, on built-in, panel-ready and compact models. Note any code or beeping pattern for the booking.

Panel-ready dishwashers have one fault of their own: a heavy custom door panel can wear out the door springs or hinge cables, so the door drops open or slams shut. The springs can be replaced and the tension matched to the panel’s weight.

04Laundry

Washer and dryer repair in Westboro homes

Washer not draining or spinning

Most often a clogged pump filter, a failed drain pump, a worn belt or a faulty door lock. Front-loaders that smell or leak usually need a new door boot.

A tub still full of water mid-cycle almost always means something in the drain path: a clogged pump filter, a coin or sock caught in the pump, a kinked drain hose or a pump that has simply worn out. If the drum won’t spin, the technician checks the motor coupler, belt, lid switch or door lock and the motor control board; if it bangs on spin, the shock absorbers, suspension springs and drum bearings. For leaks, we find the source (door boot, fill hoses, detergent dispenser, pump or tub seal) and fix that, not the symptom. Top-load, front-load, compact and stacked washers, and washer-dryer combos, are all on our list.

Dryer not heating or slow to dry

A failed element, thermal fuse or gas igniter, or a restricted vent. Older Westboro homes often have long basement vent runs, and we check them.

Damp clothes after a full cycle mean testing airflow and heat. A vent blockage often blows the thermal fuse; otherwise the heating element or a thermostat has failed, or on gas models the igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coil. No start at all points to the door switch, start switch, thermal fuse or control board; squeaking, grinding and thumping to worn drum rollers, the belt or the idler pulley; none of these is a major job. Gas and electric, stacked and compact units are all covered.

Compact laundry in Westboro condos

Condos near Westboro Village and the station often have 24-inch compact washers and ventless condenser dryers from brands such as Bosch, Miele and LG. When a condenser dryer starts taking too long, the cause is usually a clogged lint filter or condenser, or a full water tank or blocked drain line, so check and clean those first. If drying is still slow, the technician tests the heater, sensors and pump.

05Gas cooking

Gas range and oven repair in Westboro

Many renovated Westboro kitchens have gas ranges and cooktops. Our gas appliance repairs are done by TSSA-certified technicians: burners that won’t light, weak or uneven flames, igniters that click non-stop, and ovens that won’t heat. The diagnostic for gas appliances is $129 + tax and applies toward the repair.

If you smell gas, leave the home and call Enbridge Gas’s emergency line from outside before calling us.

Oven, stove and cooktop faults

Oven not heating, uneven baking, dead elements, induction and glass-top faults, control boards and self-clean locks. Behind a slow preheat or a cold oven there is usually a burnt-out bake or broil element, a temperature sensor that reads wrong, a control-board relay that has stuck, or a self-clean door lock that never released. On cooktops we repair dead elements, failed infinite switches, unresponsive or cracked glass-top controls and induction zones that won’t detect cookware, on gas, electric and induction ranges, stoves, wall ovens and cooktops, freestanding, slide-in and built-in. Before booking for an induction zone that won’t start, try a pan that a fridge magnet sticks to firmly; induction only works with magnetic cookware.

Range hood and microwave

Fans that won’t run, lights, controls and over-the-range microwaves that won’t heat. On built-in and over-the-range microwaves, which double as the hood, the technician tests and replaces magnetrons, high-voltage diodes, capacitors, door switches, turntable motors, exhaust fans and control boards; standalone ventilation hoods get the same care for fans, lights and switches. On a countertop microwave, we say plainly whether a repair is worth the money.

06Before we arrive

Before your technician arrives

  • Model and serial number. Usually on a sticker inside the fridge door, around the washer or dryer door opening, on the edge of the dishwasher door, or behind the oven drawer. A phone photo is perfect.
  • Error code. If the display shows a code, write it down or take a photo. It helps the technician narrow down the fault and the likely part.
  • Clear access. Leave a little room in front of the appliance. If it has to be pulled out, we’ll do that for you.
  • Water and power. For a leaking washer or dishwasher, shut the water valve if you can. Leave the power on unless there is a burning smell, sparking or water near outlets or wiring; then switch it off at the breaker only if you can do so without standing in water.
  • Building rules. In a condo, let us know if a service elevator or visitor parking has to be reserved.

07Repair or replace

Repair or replace? Honest advice

We’ll tell you straight when a repair isn’t worth it. As a general guide:

  • If the repair costs less than half the price of a comparable new appliance, and the appliance is in good shape otherwise, repairing is usually the better value.
  • Fridges, washers and dryers built in the last 10–12 years are usually worth fixing for common faults like pumps, fans, heaters, belts, valves and door locks.
  • A failed sealed system (compressor or refrigerant leak) on an older fridge, or a rusted-through washer tub, is often where replacement makes more sense.
  • If we recommend replacing instead of repairing, you pay only the diagnostic.

Our fridge, washer, dryer and oven repair-or-replace guides go into more detail.
