Washer not spinning in Ottawa? Causes and error codes

A front-loader stopped mid-cycle. A top-loader full of soaking sheets. An error code you’ve never seen before. When the spin cycle fails, you can’t move clothes to the dryer, you can’t start the next load, and the laundry pile just grows.

1. Unbalanced load

The easiest cause. A single heavy item (comforter, rug, jeans) throws the drum off balance and the washer aborts the spin as a safety measure. Redistribute and try again. If it keeps tripping, it’s one of the next causes on this list.

2. Clogged drain or pump

The machine must drain before it can spin. Lint, coins or a missing sock lodged in the pump filter stops drainage. You’ll see water in the drum and codes such as F05, F21, nd, OE or 5E. See washer not draining in Ottawa.

3. Broken door lock or lid switch

Front-loaders won’t spin unless the door locks, and top-loaders won’t spin unless the lid switch reports closed. It is a very common failure point. Typical codes: dE or dL (LG), dC (many Samsung models), F5 E2 (Whirlpool, Maytag) or Door.

4. Broken or stretched drive belt

Belt-driven washers fail to spin when the belt snaps or slips. You’ll hear the motor run but the drum stays still. It is an inexpensive part and a straightforward fix.

5. Motor coupler or clutch

Older direct-drive Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore washers use a plastic motor coupler that wears out or shears: the motor runs but the drum won’t spin, and usually won’t agitate either. A worn clutch on the same machines lets it agitate but spin slowly or not at all. The coupler is a cheap part and usually a one- to two-hour job.

6. Bad motor or control board

Direct-drive front-loaders from Samsung and LG can fail at the motor hall sensor or the main control board. We test both on site before recommending a replacement.

7. Worn drum bearings or suspension

Loud grinding, a jet-engine noise, or the tub banging against the cabinet during the spin means the bearings have failed or the suspension rods are worn. We’ll tell you honestly whether repair or replacement is the right call. See washer making noise.

8. Control or timer error

An electronic control can get stuck mid-cycle or skip the spin step. Sometimes a simple reset fixes it; often it points to a failing main board, which we can replace.

These are the codes our Ottawa technicians see week in, week out, with roughly what they mean before a proper diagnosis:

• LG: OE, UE, LE, dE. Drain error, unbalanced load, motor (hall sensor), door.
• Samsung: 5E or 5C, UE or Ub, dC, 5d or Sd. Drain, unbalanced load, door lock, too many suds.
• Whirlpool and Maytag: F21, F7 E1, F5 E2. Long drain, motor speed, door lock.
• Bosch: E18, F21. Drain pump, motor.
• Frigidaire and Electrolux: E10, E20, E42. Fill, drain, door lock.

Codes narrow the problem down, and their exact meaning varies by model and generation; on Samsung, for example, dC can mean a door fault or an unbalanced load, and GE codes differ too much between series to list here, so give us the exact code and model. They don’t replace a physical test, because the same code can have several root causes; the technician brings the test equipment.
