A refrigerator that runs warm rarely needs replacing; usually one part in the cooling cycle has let go. The technician works through the defrost circuit (heater, bi-metal thermostat or sensor, and the timer or control that switches them), both fans, the start relay and the controls until the failed component turns up. Ice packed over the evaporator coil behind the freezer’s back panel is one of the most frequent discoveries, and a defrost fault like that is usually a straightforward repair.

Washing machines

Few things are more frustrating than a washer that quits mid-cycle and leaves the drum full of water, yet it is usually one of the easier faults to fix. Most of the time the drain path is blocked: a sock or coin in the pump, a clogged filter, a kinked hose or a pump that has simply worn out. If the drum won’t spin, the belt, the motor coupler, the door lock or lid switch and the motor control board are tested in turn. Heavy banging on spin generally comes from worn shock absorbers, suspension springs or drum bearings.

Top-load, front-load, compact and stacked washers and all-in-one washer-dryers are all part of our work. With a leak, the technician follows the water to where it starts, whether that is the door boot, a fill hose, the detergent drawer, the pump or the tub seal, and fixes the source rather than patching the symptom.

Clothes dryers

Clothes that are still damp at the end of a full cycle call for an airflow and heat check first. The usual causes are a thermal fuse that blew because the vent is blocked, a burnt-out heating element, a failed thermostat or, on gas models, an igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coil. A dryer that won’t start at all generally points to the door switch, the start switch, the thermal fuse or the control board.

Gas and electric dryers are covered, stacked and compact units included. Squeaks, grinding and thumps mostly come from worn drum rollers, the belt or the idler pulley; replacing them is straightforward and can add years of use. Whether it leaves a puddle, a gritty film or dirty dishes, a misbehaving dishwasher nearly always has one identifiable cause. The technician inspects the filter and sump, the drain pump and hose, the spray arms, the inlet valve, the heating element and the door seal, and tests the control board and door latch when the unit won’t start at all.

Typical repairs are new drain or circulation pumps, inlet valves, gaskets, latches, heating elements and float switches, or clearing a blockage somewhere in the drain path. Ovens that preheat slowly, bake unevenly or don’t heat at all most often have a failed bake or broil element, a faulty temperature sensor, a control-board relay that has stuck, or a door lock that stayed engaged after self-clean. On cooktops the usual repairs are dead elements, infinite switches that stick or fail, glass-top controls that crack or stop responding, and induction zones that no longer detect the pan.
