Heritage kitchens

Century homes downtown mean tight fits and older circuits. An oversized replacement fridge often won’t fit the alcove, so the right repair matters more, and an older range circuit is worth having checked before a new control board or element goes in.

Waterfront condos

Condos usually run compact and stacked laundry, which has to be separated or pulled out carefully to reach the pump, belt or vent. Before the visit, find out where your unit’s water shut-off is and whether the building has rules about service hours.

Newer subdivisions

Homes off Parkedale tend to have electronics-heavy appliances still in their first decade: control boards, sensors, inverter compressors and error codes. Check whether the manufacturer’s warranty still covers the appliance; if it does, that repair may be covered.

Living on the river adds its own wear. Summer humidity works fridge door gaskets and dryer vents harder: a gasket that no longer seals lets damp air in, which shows up as frost in the freezer, sweating on the door frame or a fridge that runs constantly. Damp lint packs into dryer vents faster, so drying times stretch and the dryer runs hot. Thirty years of Eastern Ontario service means none of this is new to us, and the technician checks gaskets, airflow and venting as part of the diagnosis.

When a fridge stops keeping food cold, the cause is usually one component rather than the whole appliance. Four come up again and again: a defrost heater, thermostat or sensor that has failed and let the evaporator coil ice over; a fan, at the evaporator or the condenser, that no longer turns; a condenser coil furred with dust and pet hair; and a start relay or control board that has given out. Temperatures and airflow are measured first, then each part is tested, so the repair targets what actually failed. Puddles under a fridge usually trace back to the defrost drain (frozen or plugged), a split supply line or a weeping inlet valve. Ice makers, water dispensers, freezers that frost up, gaskets that no longer seal and fridges that click, buzz or rattle are all regular repairs, whether the fridge is a French-door, side-by-side, top- or bottom-mount, counter-depth or built-in model, and the same goes for upright and chest freezers. Compressor or refrigerant faults count as sealed-system work, with that repair quoted over the phone.

Washers

Front-load, top-load, high-efficiency and stacked washers usually reach us because they won’t drain, won’t spin, leak or stop mid-cycle with a code. A washer full of water typically has a plugged pump filter, a blocked drain hose or a pump that has died. One that won’t spin usually has a worn belt, a lid switch or door lock that doesn’t engage, tired suspension parts or a motor-control fault. Leaks are most often the door boot, a loose or split hose or a pump seal, and a sour-smelling front-loader generally has gunk in the pump filter or mould growing in the boot. Pass along any code (OE, 5C, F21, E21) when you book.

Dryers

No heat in an electric dryer points to the element, the thermal fuse or a cycling or high-limit thermostat; in a gas dryer, to the igniter, the flame sensor or the gas valve coils. A drum that won’t turn usually means the belt has broken or the idler pulley or rollers are worn, and squeals or thumps come from rollers, glides or the idler. Slow drying is frequently the vent, not the dryer, so airflow gets checked before any part is replaced. Gas dryers are handled by TSSA-certified technicians.

Dishwashers

A tub that holds water usually has a clogged filter, a plugged drain hose or air gap, or a failed drain pump. Dirty dishes point to a plugged spray arm, a weak circulation pump, a failing inlet valve or water that isn’t hot enough; a wet floor to a tired door gasket, a cracked sump or a loose connection underneath. Bosch codes E15 (water in the base) and E24 or E25 (drain faults) are common: we correct the cause, dry out the base and reset the dishwasher. Built-in, panel-ready and compact dishwashers from KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Frigidaire and Miele are covered as well.

Ranges, stoves, wall ovens and cooktops (gas, electric or induction; freestanding, slide-in or built-in) are all part of the job. The usual complaints are an oven that won’t heat or heats unevenly, a bake or broil element that has burnt out, temperatures that drift high or low, a burner or element that won’t come on, a self-clean lock stuck closed and touch controls that stop responding. Glass-top and induction cooktops add elements, infinite switches, induction generator boards and touch panels to the list of suspects.

Our TSSA-certified technicians take the gas calls: burners that won’t light, igniters that click without stopping, flames that are weak or uneven and gas ovens that won’t warm up. Electric ranges run on 240 volts, so leave the panels and wiring closed; the technician isolates the power before testing anything.

Range hood fans that won’t run or run weakly, failed hood lights and dead controls are repaired too, as are over-the-range and built-in microwaves with no heat, no power, sparking, a faulty door switch, a seized turntable motor or a failed exhaust fan. A countertop microwave usually costs less to replace than to fix, and we’ll tell you that honestly.

Either fee covers the full diagnosis and a written quote, and the repair goes ahead only once you approve it.
