02Thousand Islands
Appliance repair for Gananoque homes, cottages and inns
Gananoque is the gateway to the Thousand Islands and the far edge of our service map, but it is still on it. The town lives on the water: heritage homes in town, cottages and island-adjacent properties along the Parkway, and a hospitality strip of inns, motels and restaurants whose laundry and kitchens cannot afford downtime in season. B&M Canada Appliances has served Eastern Ontario since 1995, and we repair the whole spread, residential and commercial. You approve a written price before we start, and the finished repair is covered for three months, parts and labour.
Repairs are factory-authorized, and you can deal with us in English or French. Whatever the brand or age of the appliance, you get a straight answer on whether it is worth repairing, and an honest recommendation when it isn’t.
03Seasonal properties
Cottage appliances that sit cold all winter
Cottages and island-adjacent properties bring their own logic: appliances that sit unused all winter and are then asked to sprint all summer, compact and older units in boathouse suites, and humidity everywhere. The faults we see at spring opening follow a pattern. A fridge that hums but won’t cool after months off may have a failed start relay or a fan seized by moisture; door gaskets dry out and stop sealing; washer fill hoses and inlet valves crack after a cold winter; and rodents sometimes chew wiring behind the kick plate.
- Before you load the fridge, let it run empty for several hours and check that it actually gets cold.
- Before you open the water, look over the washer and dishwasher hoses for cracks or bulges.
- If you unplug the fridge in the fall, empty it, wipe it dry and prop the doors open so mould doesn’t grow inside.
When you book, tell us it is a seasonal property and which days you will be there. Once we have your dates, we call or text with a three-hour arrival window and try to match it to a day you’re already there, so you’re not making an extra trip to the cottage.
04Hospitality
Inns, B&Bs, motels and restaurant kitchens
Tourist towns have two appliance seasons: the summer rush, when an inn’s dryer or a cottage fridge failing is an emergency, and the quiet months, when an appliance that has sat idle needs attention before the first guests arrive. Innkeepers and restaurant owners get written diagnostics, honest repair-or-replace math and repairs planned around check-ins and service hours where we can.
The diagnostic for commercial equipment is $189 + tax; the quote still comes in writing before any work, and a written report follows the visit. Daily guest laundry wears washer bearings, belts and dryer rollers faster than a household ever would, so mention how many loads the machine runs a day when you book. For restaurant refrigeration and cooking equipment, see our commercial appliance repair page.
05Refrigeration
Fridges, freezers and ice makers
- Warm fridge, cold freezer: cold air from the freezer has stopped reaching the fridge, either because frost has smothered the evaporator coil after a defrost heater, thermostat or sensor failed, or because the evaporator fan has quit.
- Both sections warm: look to the condenser side: a stalled condenser fan, coils matted with dust, a start relay that no longer gets the compressor going, or a control fault. A compressor or refrigerant problem is sealed-system work, and that repair is priced by phone.
- Water on the floor or under the crispers: the defrost drain is often frozen or plugged; otherwise a split water line or a dripping inlet valve.
- Ice maker or dispenser stopped: a frozen fill tube, a failed inlet valve, a clogged filter or a faulty ice-maker module.
- Clicking, buzzing or rattling: fan blades catching ice, a failing fan motor, or a start relay trying and failing to start the compressor.
Every fridge layout is covered, from French-door and side-by-side to top- or bottom-freezer and counter-depth, along with compact units in guest suites and boathouses and upright or chest freezers. Spoilage starts within hours, so keep the doors shut and put the essentials in a cooler until the technician arrives.
06Laundry
Washers and dryers that work hard all season
Washers
- Won’t drain: the pump filter is plugged, the drain hose is kinked or blocked, or the pump itself has failed.
- Won’t spin: usually the belt, a door lock or lid switch that isn’t registering, tired suspension or a motor-control fault.
- Leaking: the usual sources are a split in the door boot (bellows), a hose connection that has worked free and a pump seal that has let go.
- Musty smell: on front-loaders, trapped debris in the pump filter or mould in the boot; we clean or replace the part and show you how to keep it fresh.
Front-loaders, top-loaders, HE and stacked washers are all repaired, and a display code (OE, 5C, F21, E21 and so on) is worth passing along when you book.
Dryers
- No heat: electric dryers usually need a heating element, thermal fuse or one of the thermostats; gas models more often an igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils.
- Runs but won’t tumble: the belt has snapped, or the idler pulley or drum rollers have worn out.
- Squealing or thumping: rollers, glides or the idler.
- Takes too long: more often than not, lint packed in the vent rather than a dryer fault; restricted airflow also overheats the machine and raises the fire risk.
Airflow is measured during every dryer diagnosis, so you’ll know whether cleaning the vent would fix it. Gas dryers go to our TSSA-certified technicians.
07Kitchen
Dishwashers, ranges, cooktops, hoods and microwaves
Dishwashers reach us when they won’t drain, don’t clean, leak, don’t fill, won’t start or leave dishes wet. Water left standing in the tub: filter clogged, drain hose or air gap blocked, or drain pump failed. Dirty dishes: spray arm plugged, circulation pump weak, inlet valve failing or water not hot enough. A puddle on the floor: door gasket worn, sump cracked or a hose loose beneath the tub. Bosch owners often see E15, meaning water has collected in the base, or E24 and E25, which are drain faults; the fix is to cure the cause, dry the base and reset the machine.
Ranges, stoves, wall ovens and cooktops are repaired whether they run on gas, electricity or induction. Common faults are an oven that won’t come up to heat or bakes unevenly, a bake or broil element burnt through, a temperature that drifts, a burner that won’t light or an igniter that won’t stop clicking, a self-clean lock stuck shut and a touchpad gone dead. Our TSSA-certified technicians handle the gas models. Electric ranges also run on 240 volts, so leave panels and wiring to the technician.
Smell propane or gas? Get everyone outside, then call your propane supplier (or Enbridge Gas for natural gas) from there. Book the repair afterwards.
Range hoods (fans, lights and controls) and built-in or over-the-range microwaves are part of the job too: no heat, no start, sparking, a bad door switch, a stalled turntable motor or an exhaust fan that has quit. Countertop microwaves rarely justify a repair bill, and we’ll say so up front.
