Short answer
A fridge making noise usually points to a failing evaporator or condenser fan motor, a worn compressor or start relay, a clicking defrost timer, or vibration from coils and panels. A steady hum, occasional clicks and trickling water are normal. Loud grinding, squealing, knocking or repeated clicking with weak cooling are not, and catching the noisy part early often prevents a more expensive failure.
01Before you book
Safe checks first
Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.
- Find where it comes fromInside the freezer usually means the evaporator fan; the back or bottom means the condenser fan or compressor; the door area often means the ice maker.
- Door testOn many models the freezer fan pauses when the freezer door opens. If the noise stops with the door open, the fan is the likely source.
- Clean the condenser areaUnplug the fridge and vacuum the coils and fan area at the back or behind the bottom grille; dust and pet hair cause much of the rattling.
- Know the normal soundsGurgling, a soft hum, ice dropping into the bin and a click when the defrost timer advances are all part of normal operation.
Stop using it if you notice
- Burning smell or smoke from the back or bottom
- Repeated clicking while the fridge gets warm
- Buzzing from the plug or outlet, or a hot cord
- The breaker trips when the fridge starts
Switch the fridge off, keep the doors closed to hold the cold and book a visit; don’t take off the rear access panel. Then call 613-301-0016.
02Sound guide
What your refrigerator’s noise is telling you
Every fridge hums a little, but a new, loud or changing noise is worth paying attention to. The type of sound usually points to the source, and catching a noisy part early often prevents a more expensive failure later. These are the most common fridge-making-noise causes our technicians find across Ottawa.
1. Evaporator fan motor (loud humming or squealing from inside)
The evaporator fan sits behind the freezer wall and circulates cold air. As its motor bearings wear, it squeals, chirps or hums loudly. A failing evaporator fan also reduces airflow and cooling, so if your fridge is warming up as well, see our fridge not cooling Ottawa page.
2. Condenser fan motor (rattling or buzzing from the back or bottom)
The condenser fan near the compressor cools the coils. Dust, pet hair or a worn bearing makes it rattle, buzz or grind. A clogged condenser fan area is one of the most common noise complaints, and cleaning or replacing the fan is usually a quick fix.
3. Compressor (loud humming, knocking or clicking)
The compressor is the heart of the fridge. A louder-than-usual hum can be normal, but knocking, or a clicking on-off cycle, can signal a failing start relay or a struggling compressor. If you hear repeated clicking and the fridge isn’t cold, the start relay is a common, fixable culprit, and replacing it early can save the compressor.
4. Defrost timer, ice maker or vibration
A periodic click can simply be the defrost timer advancing, and an occasional buzz or thunk can be the ice maker filling or dropping ice; both are normal. Persistent rattling, though, often comes from loose coils, a drain pan or panels vibrating, or a fridge that isn’t sitting level. If the ice maker is noisy and not producing ice, see our ice maker not working guide, or freezer not freezing Ottawa if the freezer is also warm.
03Noise diagnosis
Refrigerator noise diagnosis in Ottawa and Gatineau
A grinding or knocking fridge can fail without warning, and a warm fridge means spoiled groceries. Same-day visits are possible when the schedule allows, from Kanata, Nepean and Barrhaven to Orléans and Gloucester, and on the Quebec side in Hull and Aylmer. The technician listens for the noise, opens the right panel and tells you what is wearing out, with a written price before any work.
- $89 + tax residential diagnostic, credited to the repair you approve; $129 + tax commercial.
- $159 + tax when a home fridge’s compressor or refrigerant system is the cause; that labour is quoted by phone.
- 3 months of warranty on parts and labour.
- $100 flat after-hours fee from 9 PM to 7 AM; outside a 30 km radius of downtown Ottawa, a travel charge may apply.
04How urgent
Which fridge noises are urgent?
A gentle hum, occasional clicking from the defrost timer and water trickling are usually normal. The sounds below are a reason to book sooner, because a noisy fan that stops moving air can quietly let your fridge warm up.
| Sound | Likely source | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Soft, steady hum | Compressor running normally | Nothing |
| Click every few hours, then a brief sizzle | Defrost timer and heater | Nothing |
| Squealing or chirping inside the freezer | Evaporator fan bearings | Book soon |
| Rattle or buzz at the back or bottom | Condenser fan, dust, loose drain pan | Clean, then book if it persists |
| Grinding | Fan blade hitting ice, or a worn motor bearing | Book now |
| Click every few minutes, fridge warming | Start relay, or compressor not starting | Book now |
| Knocking from the compressor | Worn compressor or mounts | Book now |
If your fridge is under about 10 years old, repair is usually cheaper than replacement. For typical pricing, see our fridge repair cost Ottawa guide, and for full service visit the Ottawa refrigerator repair service hub. A noise that started suddenly and is very loud is also covered in fridge making a loud noise.
05Fridge types
We repair all refrigerator types and brands
French-door, side-by-side, bottom-freezer, top-freezer and counter-depth refrigerators: we service them all. B&M Canada Appliances, in business since 1995, regularly repairs Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, GE, Maytag, KitchenAid, Bosch, Kenmore and Danby fridges. Whatever the model, the process is the same: trace the noise to its source, then replace the worn part. If you also notice water on the floor, that points to a separate drain or line issue (see fridge leaking water) that the technician can also check during the visit.
06The visit
What to expect during your refrigerator repair visit
Once you book, we call or text with a confirmed arrival window (about three hours) and ask for the fridge make and model so the technician knows what to expect. At the visit, the evaporator fan, condenser fan, compressor and start relay, defrost timer, and the mounting points for loose coils or panels are checked by ear and by hand until the source of the noise is found. The quote is written up and approved before the repair starts.
Many fridge noise repairs are done in one visit when the part is a common one. When a part has to be ordered, you are told how long it should take and kept informed. The repair carries a 3-month warranty on parts and labour.
07Quiet running
Tips to keep your fridge running quietly
Vacuum the condenser coils and the fan area at the back or bottom every six months; dust is a leading cause of rattling and buzzing. Make sure the fridge sits level and isn’t touching the wall or cabinets, which amplifies vibration. Don’t overpack shelves against the rear vents, since blocked airflow makes the fans work harder. If a new grinding or squealing sound appears, book early: a worn fan bearing caught now is a far smaller repair than a seized motor or a damaged compressor later.

Why is my refrigerator suddenly so loud?
A sudden increase in noise is most often a worn evaporator or condenser fan motor, or a struggling compressor or start relay. Dust buildup around the condenser fan is a very common, easily fixed cause, and a technician can pinpoint the source in a single visit.
Is a humming or buzzing fridge dangerous?
A steady, quiet hum is normal: that’s the compressor. Loud humming, grinding, squealing or repeated clicking should be checked, especially if cooling has dropped off; a buzzing plug or outlet is an electrical fault, so switch that circuit off at the breaker.
My fridge clicks on and off. What does that mean?
Repeated clicking with weak or no cooling usually points to a failing compressor start relay. It is a common, fixable part, and replacing it early can protect the compressor from damage.
How fast can you come out in Ottawa?
Same-day visits are possible when the schedule allows, and requests sent early in the day have the best chance. The visit is confirmed once we call or text you a time window.
How much does a refrigerator diagnosis cost?
A residential diagnostic costs $89 + tax ($129 + tax for commercial units), and that amount goes toward the repair. A compressor or refrigerant fault on a home fridge needs the $159 + tax sealed-system diagnostic, with labour quoted by phone.
