Short answer
A gas burner that keeps clicking, even after it lights or when the knob is off, is usually moisture under the burner cap, a cap that is dirty or off-centre, or a worn igniter switch. Less often a failed spark module or a cracked igniter electrode is to blame. Let a wet burner dry and re-seat the cap; if the clicking continues, book a repair. If you smell gas, leave the home and call Enbridge Gas from outside.
01Before you book
Safe checks first
Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.
- Let it dryAfter a boil-over or a wipe-down, turn the knob off and give the burner a few hours to dry. Water under the cap is the usual reason for non-stop clicking.
- Re-seat the capWith the burner off and cool, set the cap back flat and centred on the burner head. A crooked cap stops the spark from lighting cleanly.
- Clean, don’t soakBrush crusted food off the cap and ports with a dry cloth or soft brush, keeping water away from the white ceramic igniter.
- Knobs fully offA knob that sticks just past OFF can hold its spark switch closed, and on most ranges one closed switch makes every igniter spark. Turn each knob firmly to OFF and see whether the clicking stops.
Stop using it if you notice
- A smell of gas (rotten eggs) around the stove
- Gas flowing without lighting within a few seconds
- Burners that light late with a whoosh or a pop
- Sparks jumping outside the burner, or a burning smell
- Yellow, lifting or uneven flames
If you smell gas, leave the home now and call Enbridge Gas (Gazifère on the Gatineau side) or 911 from outside. Otherwise turn the knobs off, unplug the range or switch off its breaker, and leave the burner parts in place. Then call 613-301-0016.
02Common causes
Why a gas stove igniter keeps clicking
- Moisture in the burner. Spills or cleaning water under the burner cap make the igniter keep sparking until everything dries.
- Misaligned or dirty burner cap. A cap that is off-centre or crusted with food keeps the spark from completing, so it clicks again and again.
- Worn igniter switch. A failing spark switch behind the knob sends a constant signal, so the burner clicks even when it is off.
- Failed spark module. A bad module can make one burner, or every burner, click non-stop.
- Cracked igniter electrode. A cracked ceramic igniter misfires and keeps clicking.

The technician dries and cleans the burner assembly, checks the cap alignment, and tests the igniter switch and spark module, then replaces the worn part so the burner lights cleanly and the clicking stops. In Ontario the gas work is done by our TSSA-certified technicians; for a gas range in Gatineau, service is confirmed when you book.
