Most fridges that stop cooling have one failed component somewhere in the cooling cycle, and the job is finding which. The defrost system gets tested first (heater, bi-metal thermostat, sensor, and the timer or control board that drives them), because an evaporator coil iced solid behind the freezer panel is among the most frequent finds. After that the technician moves to the fans at both coils, the start relay and the electronic controls.

Lake-country kitchens bring the rest of the list: water collecting under the crisper drawers, ice makers that won’t fill or dispense slowly, water valves that leak or chatter, door gaskets worn by summer humidity, and fans or compressors that have grown loud. Built-in, panel-ready, French-door and side-by-side refrigerators, top- and bottom-freezer models and upright or chest freezers are all repaired. A washer that quits mid-cycle full of water nearly always has a drain problem: something caught in the pump (a sock or a coin is typical), a filter packed with lint, a kinked drain hose or a tired drain pump. If the tub won’t spin, the technician checks the belt or drive coupler, the lock or lid switch and the motor board; heavy banging on spin usually means the shocks, springs or tub bearings are done. When an oven takes ages to preheat, browns one side or won’t heat at all, the culprit is usually the bake or broil element, the temperature probe, the control board’s relays, or a door lock still engaged after self-clean. Cooktop repairs cover dead elements, failed infinite switches, cracked or unresponsive glass-top panels and induction zones that won’t recognise a pan, on freestanding, slide-in and built-in ranges and wall ovens. TSSA-certified technicians take the gas ranges, ovens and cooktops, whether a burner won’t light, an igniter clicks without stopping, flames are weak or uneven or a gas oven won’t heat.

A dishwasher that leaves puddles, film or dirty dishes is checked along the whole water path, from filter, sump and drain pump to the spray arms, the fill valve, the heater and the door gasket; the board and latch are tested when the unit won’t start. Hard water coats spray arms and valves, so the technician checks for scale as well.
