Lanark is village homes on the Clyde, sugar bushes and hobby farms up every side road, and lake places toward Dalhousie and White Lakes. The Highlands sit just past where most city service areas quietly end. • Sugar-shack season. In late winter the house fridge often does double duty. Packed shelves block the vents that carry cold air down from the freezer, and constant door openings load the coil with frost, so the fresh-food side runs warm even though nothing has failed. Leave room around the vents and check that the door gaskets still seal.
• Wood-heated basements. Ash and dust settle on fridge condenser coils and on the lint and air paths of dryers; a twice-yearly vacuum of the coils (with the fridge unplugged) and a clean vent run prevent a lot of overheating.
• Winter vents. On a cold night, moist dryer exhaust can freeze the outside vent flap shut, and drifting snow can bury a low vent hood. A dryer that suddenly takes twice as long in January is often a blocked hood rather than a broken dryer.
• Rural power. Brief outages and generator changeovers can leave an electronic control misbehaving; mention any recent storm when you book, and the technician tests the board and the incoming supply together.
• Well water. Scale and sediment build up in dishwashers, washer inlet screens and heating elements.
• Lake places. At seasonal places on Dalhousie and White Lakes, water left over winter in a washer pump or dishwasher sump can freeze and split a valve, so watch the first cycle of the season for drips, and give a fridge that sat unplugged a few hours to cool before you load it.

Hobby farms and big families keep more than one fridge or freezer running, often in a garage, a mudroom or the basement. When one warms up, the technician follows the cooling cycle step by step: the defrost heater, thermostat or sensor and its control, the evaporator fan that moves the cold air, the fan and coil on the condenser side, and the start relay and overload that get the compressor running. A drain line frozen at the back of the freezer explains most puddles under the crispers, and a slow ice maker usually has a water-valve or supply problem.

Compressor and refrigerant problems are sealed-system work, diagnosed separately, with the repair price given by phone. Farm and family laundry means full drums every day. On front-loaders, we see pump filters packed with grit and hair, torn door boots, worn drum bearings that roar on spin, and mould where the door stayed shut between loads. Too much detergent causes oversudsing errors on many high-efficiency machines, so measure it, and leave the door ajar to dry. A front-loader on an uneven farmhouse floor will walk and bang on spin; levelling the feet often cures it. Older top-loaders wear agitator parts and drive couplers, and their lid switches fail with years of use. Write down any code on the display (OE, 5C, F21, E21 and so on) for your request.

Clean the dryer’s lint screen every load and have the whole vent run cleared at least once a year; long rural vent runs clog faster than short ones. For dryers, the order of checks is airflow first, then heat: the vent run and outside hood, then the thermal fuse, heating element and cycling and high-limit thermostats, or, for gas dryers, the igniter, the flame sensor and the valve coils. When an oven bakes unevenly or never reaches temperature, the culprit is usually a worn bake or broil element, a temperature sensor that reads wrong, or a relay on the control board; self-clean locks that stay shut and touch controls that ignore you are common too. Cooktop work covers coil elements, infinite switches, glass-top controls and induction zones. Ranges and dryers run on 240 volts, so leave panels closed and let the technician isolate the power.

A dishwasher that leaves water behind usually needs its filter cleared, its drain hose or air gap freed, or a new drain pump; poor cleaning points to scale, clogged spray-arm holes, a tired circulation pump or an inlet valve that sticks. On Bosch models, E15 means water has reached the base pan and E24 or E25 a drain restriction. Range hoods with weak fans or dead lights, and over-the-range microwaves that hum without heating, are repaired as well.
