Appliance repair in Alfred & Plantagenet, Ontario

The river townships between Rockland and Hawkesbury are exactly the kind of place big-city dispatchers tend to skip. We don’t. Describe the problem however it comes naturally. « Ma laveuse ne vidange plus », « la sécheuse ne chauffe pas » or « le congélateur se remplit de givre » tells us as much as the English version, especially if you add the brand and the model number from the label inside the door or lid.

• Well-water scale. Hard water coats dishwasher heating elements and spray-arm jets, leaves a white film on glasses and slowly narrows inlet valves. Cleaning, a descaling cycle and the right rinse-aid setting often restore performance; a valve scaled shut gets replaced.
• Sediment in washer valves. Sand and grit from a well collect in the fine screens of a washer’s inlet valve, so the machine fills slowly or stops with a fill error. We clear or replace the valve and tell you whether a sediment filter upstream would help.
• Humidity near the river. Damp summer air makes fridges and freezers work harder, and it shows up any weakness in the door gaskets. A gasket that no longer seals lets moist air in, and that moisture ends up as frost on the coil and condensation on the cabinet.
• Basement and garage locations. Second fridges and chest freezers in unheated or damp spaces have their own patterns: dust-clogged condenser coils, corroded hinges and latches, and controls that misread a cold room.

A freezer full of beef or a season of garden produce is the call that can’t wait. When a chest or upright freezer stops holding temperature, we check the thermostat or electronic control, the start relay and overload on the compressor, the condenser fan on upright models, and the lid or door seal. Frost that builds into a thick layer usually points to a seal letting humid air in, or to a defrost fault on frost-free uprights. For the house fridge, the common faults are a defrost heater or sensor that has quit and let the evaporator coil freeze solid, an evaporator or condenser fan that has stopped, a plugged defrost drain that leaves water under the crispers, and ice makers that no longer fill. Buying advice when a freezer is beyond repair

If an old chest freezer isn’t worth fixing, we tell you why in plain terms: the compressor has failed, the cabinet is rusting through, or the cost of the repair is close to a new unit. A manual-defrost chest freezer is still the most forgiving choice for bulk meat and garden produce, because it holds temperature well when the power flickers and has fewer parts to fail than a frost-free upright.

Washers

Farm laundry is heavy and constant. When a washer won’t drain, the cause is usually something trapped in the pump or filter, or a worn drain pump; one that won’t spin needs the lid switch or door lock, belt, suspension or motor control checked; leaks come from the door boot, the hoses or a pump seal. We repair top-load, front-load and stacked machines.

Dryers

A dryer that needs two cycles per load is usually fighting a lint-packed vent, which also makes it run hot. We fix the cause and replace thermal fuses, elements, thermostats, belts and rollers as needed. Gas dryers are looked after by our TSSA-certified technicians.

Stoves, ovens and range hoods

Coil and glass-top ranges, wall ovens and induction cooktops get the same approach: we test bake and broil elements, sensors, switches and controls before replacing anything. On gas ranges, TSSA-certified technicians repair burners that won’t light and igniters that click without stopping. A range hood with a weak fan or a dead light usually needs a motor, switch or socket.

Late summer is canning season in many farm kitchens, and long sessions with a full canner on high heat are hard on a stove. Coil elements and the infinite switches that control them burn out under hours of maximum heat, and on glass tops the element’s limiter cycles off to protect the glass, so the pot stops boiling and it looks like a fault. Check your manual before canning on a glass or induction top; if an element has failed, we replace the element, switch or terminal block that caused it.

Dishwashers

Besides well-water scale, the usual dishwasher faults are a clogged filter, a blocked drain hose, a failed drain or circulation pump and a worn door gasket. If the machine shows a code or beeps a pattern, tell us when you book.
