Most of the time the cause is one part: a defrost heater, sensor or thermostat that let the evaporator ice over, a stopped fan, a dirty condenser coil, or a failed start relay or control board. A compressor or refrigerant fault means sealed-system work, which is quoted by phone. While you wait, keep the doors shut and move essentials to a cooler.

Fridges with an ice maker or dispenser on a well supply are prone to clogged water filters and inlet valves; slow ice, small cubes and a trickling dispenser are the signs. A leak under the crisper drawers usually traces back to a frozen or blocked defrost drain.

Washers that won’t drain, spin or fill

Most standing water comes down to a clogged pump filter, a kinked or blocked hose, or a failed drain pump. No spin usually comes down to a belt, lid switch or door lock, worn suspension or the motor control. On well water, slow filling is often sediment in the inlet screens, and front-loaders that smell musty need the pump filter cleared and the door boot cleaned or replaced. Note any code (OE, 5C, F21, E21 and similar) when you book.

Dryers that won’t heat

Electric dryers usually need a heating element, thermal fuse or thermostat; on gas models it is more often the igniter, flame sensor or valve coils, which our TSSA-certified technicians repair. Squealing or thumping points to rollers, glides or the idler pulley. A restricted vent causes long drying times and overheating, and keeping it clear is a matter of fire safety.

Dishwashers

Standing water means the filter is clogged, the drain hose or air gap is blocked, or the pump has failed. Poor cleaning on well water is often scale on the spray arms and element, combined with a weak circulation pump or a tired inlet valve. Leaks usually trace to a worn door gasket, a loose connection underneath or, less often, a cracked sump; on Bosch models, E15 signals water in the base.

Stoves, ovens and cooktops

An oven that won’t heat or bakes unevenly usually needs a bake or broil element or a temperature sensor, and self-clean locks and touch controls can fail too. Any gas range, oven or cooktop work is done by TSSA-certified technicians. Glass-top and induction cooktops are diagnosed down to the failed part, whether an element, an infinite switch, the induction generator board or the touch controls.

Range hoods and microwaves

A hood fan that hums but won’t spin is usually down to the motor or its capacitor, and dead lights can be a socket or switch as well as the bulb. Over-the-range microwaves that light up without heating typically need a door switch, high-voltage diode or magnetron. We will tell you when a countertop unit is cheaper to replace than to repair.
