02Established homes
Repairing Bells Corners’ established homes
Bells Corners is a long-settled west Nepean community of 1950s to 1970s bungalows, split-levels and two-storeys on quiet streets off Robertson Road and Moodie Drive. Many families here, including federal workers at the nearby DND and business-park campuses, have kept their homes for years, and often their appliances too. We see plenty of ageing refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers and laundry pairs, and we are happy to repair a good appliance rather than push a replacement.
Many houses still have the original laundry room in the basement, while the kitchens have been updated over the years, so one visit can mean a long-serving dryer downstairs and a new induction range upstairs. Either way you get a full diagnostic, a written quote and a straight answer on whether the repair makes sense.
With an older appliance, that answer weighs the part that failed, the repair cost and how much life the machine has left. A sturdy laundry pair with a worn belt or a burnt-out element is usually well worth fixing; a fridge with a failed compressor late in its life often is not, and we will say so. Our dryer repair-or-replace guide walks through one example.

04Older houses
Appliance repair for Bells Corners homes
Older-home laundry and venting
With the washer and dryer in the basement, the dryer vent often runs along the joists to a far wall. Lint settles in every bend, so a dryer that takes two cycles usually has an airflow problem first and a heating problem second; that is why airflow gets checked before any part is replaced. Older plumbing brings its own washer faults: fill hoses that have hardened and crack, slow-draining standpipes, and supply valves that no longer close fully.
Gas appliances
Where a home cooks or dries with natural gas, our TSSA-certified technicians repair the range, oven, cooktop or dryer: a burner that won’t light, an igniter that clicks without stopping, an oven that won’t heat or a dryer with no flame. The gas service call is $129 + tax.
Renovated kitchens and newer controls
Updated kitchens bring dishwashers, ranges and fridges with electronic controls and error codes. Note the code when you book. Still under the manufacturer’s warranty? Contact the manufacturer first; the repair may be covered.
Renovations bring one more pattern: a new dishwasher or range fitted into older cabinetry and floors that are no longer perfectly level. A dishwasher that sits out of level can leak at the door, and a range that isn’t level bakes unevenly, so the technician checks the installation as well as the parts.

What we check on each appliance
Fridges and freezers
When a fridge runs warm, the technician works through the cooling cycle part by part: defrost heater, bi-metal thermostat and sensor first, then both fans, the start relay and the control board. On older models a frozen coil behind the freezer panel is the classic finding, and it is usually a defrost repair done on the spot. Water under the crisper drawers, an ice maker that stopped filling, a worn door gasket and a noisy fan are all common, fixable calls. Compressor and sealed-system faults have a separate $159 + tax diagnostic, with the repair priced by phone.
Washers
A tub full of water mid-cycle is usually a drain issue: a sock caught in the pump, a filter packed with lint, a kinked drain hose or a pump that has worn out. A drum that won’t spin sends us to the belt, motor coupler, lid switch or door lock and the motor control, and banging on spin to the shocks, springs or bearings. Leaks are traced to the door boot, fill hoses, dispenser, pump or tub seal.
Dryers
Damp clothes after a full cycle point to a blocked vent, a blown thermal fuse, a burnt element or a failed thermostat, or on gas dryers to the igniter, flame sensor or valve coils. When it won’t start at all, the thermal fuse, door switch, start switch or control board is the usual suspect. Squeaks and thumps come from worn drum rollers, a frayed belt or the idler pulley.
Dishwashers
Puddles, gritty film and dirty dishes each have a specific cause. The technician works from the filter and sump through the drain pump and hose to the spray arms, heating element, inlet valve and door gasket, and checks the latch and control if the unit won’t start. Typical repairs are pumps, inlet valves, gaskets, latches, heating elements and float switches.
Ovens, ranges and cooktops
Slow preheating or uneven baking usually means a burnt-out bake or broil element, a temperature sensor reading wrong or a relay stuck on the control board; an oven door that stays locked after self-clean usually points to the lock motor, a lock switch or the control. On cooktops we repair dead coil or radiant elements, infinite switches, glass-top controls and induction zones. In older houses a scorched terminal block or a tired range receptacle is a common find, and electric ranges run on 240 volts, so please leave the panels to the technician.
Microwaves and range hoods
We repair magnetrons, diodes, capacitors, door switches, turntable motors, fans and controls on over-the-range and built-in microwaves, and fans, lights and switches on range hoods.
Gas odour? Don’t touch switches or the range. Leave the home and call Enbridge Gas from outside.
