Appliance repair for Carlington’s post-war homes

Carlington is a practical, central neighbourhood in Ottawa’s west end. Most of its houses are post-war bungalows and homes from the 1950s and 1960s, with low-rise apartment buildings along Carling Avenue and Merivale Road and a growing number of renovated properties on the slopes near the Civic Hospital. Many of the calls we get here are for aging laundry pairs in basements, apartment-size ranges and fridges in rental units, and newer appliances in upgraded kitchens.

We have repaired appliances in Ottawa since 1995 and work on all the brands common in these homes, including Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, Maytag, Inglis, Kenmore and KitchenAid. We serve Carlington in English or French.

03Repair or replace

A fair repair for everyday appliances

Families here tend to keep appliances running as long as it makes sense, and we focus on the repair that solves the problem rather than on selling a replacement. Every call starts with a full diagnosis and a written quote on site, so you know the cost before any work begins and can decide with the numbers in front of you.

As a rough guide, a repair is usually worth it when it costs well under half the price of a comparable new appliance and the rest of the machine is in good shape. A ten-year-old top-load washer with a failed lid switch is an easy yes; a fridge of the same age with a failed compressor deserves a harder look. Our repair-or-replace guide and the page on how long appliances last go into more detail.

04Basement laundry

Washers and dryers in Carlington basements

In a 1950s or 1960s house the laundry is usually in the basement, often beside a laundry tub that the washer drains into, and the dryer vent may travel a long way across the ceiling to reach an outside wall. Those layouts produce a familiar set of problems:

  • Dryer takes forever: a long or crushed vent run, often with lint packed at the elbows, is the usual cause, and the extra heat also makes thermal fuses blow. The technician checks the airflow and the dryer itself and tells you which one is at fault. See dryer takes too long.
  • Dryer runs but stays cold: a failed element, thermal fuse or cycling thermostat on electric models; an igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coil on gas dryers.
  • Washer leaking: worn rubber fill hoses, a torn door boot on a front-loader or a tired pump seal. Braided steel hoses are a sensible upgrade on an older machine.
  • Washer won’t drain or spin: a blocked pump or filter, a worn belt or motor coupler, or a faulty lid switch or door lock.
  • Laundry tub overflowing: sometimes the tub drain, not the washer, is the restriction. If the washer pumps out normally, we tell you it is a plumbing issue rather than replacing parts you don’t need.

Top-load washers in these basements are often older direct-drive or belt-drive models with simple, inexpensive parts, which makes them worth fixing more often than people expect.

05Kitchen repairs

Fridge, stove and dishwasher repair in Carlington kitchens

Refrigerators

Older fridges in these homes are often top-freezer models. When one warms up, a defrost heater, defrost thermostat, evaporator fan or start relay is a more common culprit than the compressor, and a dusty condenser coil underneath or behind the fridge makes it struggle in summer. Water under the crisper drawers usually means a frozen defrost drain. If testing does point to the sealed system, that diagnostic is $159 + tax and the repair is quoted by phone.

Dishwashers added in renovations

In post-war houses the dishwasher was often added later, during a kitchen renovation, sometimes with an improvised drain connection. When water sits in the tub, the technician checks the filter, the drain-hose loop, the air gap or the knockout plug on a newly installed garbage disposal, and the drain pump. Poor cleaning usually comes down to clogged spray arms, a failing circulation pump or a fill valve that doesn’t let enough water in.

Ranges and ovens

We replace bake and broil elements, surface elements, infinite switches, oven sensors and control boards on electric ranges, and repair hoods and over-the-range microwaves above them. Ranges use a 240-volt circuit, and older homes may still have original receptacles and wiring, so leave the back panel to the technician. If a breaker trips repeatedly, an electrician may need to check the circuit as well as the appliance.

Above the range, we fix hood fans that have slowed or stopped, burnt-out hood lights and switches, and over-the-range microwaves that no longer heat or whose exhaust fan has failed. Grease-soaked hood filters are worth washing or replacing before you book, because a clogged filter alone can make a healthy fan sound weak.

Newer appliances in renovated Carlington houses

The renovated houses on the slopes near the Civic Hospital tend to have newer stainless appliances: French-door fridges with ice makers and filtered water, convection ranges with touch controls, quiet dishwashers with electronic panels and high-efficiency front-load laundry. These machines fail differently from the older models down the street. Control boards, sensors, ice-maker modules, water valves and door locks are more common repairs than worn belts and elements.

Most of them also report faults as error codes. Write the code down along with the model number when you book, because it narrows down the fault before the technician arrives. If the appliance is only a few years old, check whether the manufacturer’s warranty still covers it before booking, since the manufacturer may cover that repair. When an ice maker stops after a renovation, a kinked supply line behind the fridge or a water filter that was never seated properly is a quick thing to rule out first.

06Apartments and rentals

Low-rise apartments along Carling and Merivale

The apartment buildings along Carling Avenue and Merivale Road mostly have apartment-size ranges and fridges, with laundry either in the suite or in a shared room. We repair the in-suite appliances for tenants, owners and property managers, and we can coordinate access with whoever manages the building.

Because many of these units are rented, the written quote matters: the owner sees exactly what failed and what the repair costs before approving it, and the written diagnostic report gives the tenant and the landlord the same record. Tell us about parking and building entry when you book.

07Gas appliances

Gas ranges, ovens and dryers in Carlington

Gas appliance repairs are done by our TSSA-certified technicians: burners that won’t light, igniters that click without stopping, ovens that won’t heat and gas dryers with no heat. The gas diagnostic is $129 + tax. More on gas appliance repair in Ottawa.

If you smell gas, don’t touch light switches or appliance controls. Leave the house and call Enbridge Gas from outside.
