Appliance repair in Richmond, Ontario

One of Ottawa’s oldest villages is also one of its fastest-growing, and both halves break appliances. Richmond runs two housing generations side by side: the village core settled in 1818, and the new subdivisions filling in around it. New-build appliances fail differently from village originals, and our technicians work on both regularly.

When a whole neighbourhood is built within a few years, its appliances age together. Somewhere between year three and year seven, once the warranties have run out, builder-grade dishwashers, fridges and washers develop their first real faults. The usual suspects are electronic: control boards, temperature and water-level sensors, door-lock assemblies, and the inverter compressors and drive boards used in many newer fridges.

• Fridges: ice makers that stop, evaporators iced up by a failed defrost sensor or heater, fans, and inverter control boards.
• Dishwashers: drain pumps, inlet valves, door latches and leak sensors that halt the cycle.
• Front-load washers: door locks, drain pumps clogged with small items, and torn door boots.
• Ranges: touch controls, oven temperature sensors and glass-top elements.

Appliances still inside the maker’s warranty may be covered, so check those documents before booking. Tell us any error code when you book; on a newer appliance it often points straight at the failed part.

The village side calls for different instincts. Older homes may carry a wiring history from the 60-amp era, with circuits added over the decades. A 240-volt dryer or range on an ageing circuit can trip breakers or heat poorly without anything being wrong inside it, so ruling out the supply is part of the diagnosis. On the rural edges some homes cook or dry on propane; mention it when you book so we can confirm, before the visit, whether we can help.

In the countryside around town many homes are on wells. Hard water scales up dishwashers and clogs washer inlet screens, and sediment in a fridge’s water filter or inlet valve slows the ice maker. Our diagnosis reads the house as well as the machine.

Older village houses also tend to keep their laundry in the basement, with a dryer vent that has to travel a long way to an outside wall. Every extra metre and elbow collects lint, so a dryer that takes two cycles to finish is checked for airflow before any part is condemned. The fridges in these kitchens are often older too, with mechanical defrost timers and thermostats rather than electronic boards, and those parts are often still available.

Fridges and freezers

A fridge that warms up while the freezer stays cold usually has an airflow problem: an evaporator frosted over by a defrost fault, or a stopped evaporator fan. When both sections warm, the condenser fan, a dirty condenser coil, the start relay or the control board come next. Water under the crisper drawers usually means a frozen or blocked defrost drain. Keep the doors closed while you wait, and move essentials to a cooler if it has been warm for several hours. Compressor and refrigerant faults count as sealed-system work: those have a $159 + tax diagnostic, and the repair is quoted by phone.

Washing machines

When a washer leaves water in the drum, the pump filter, the drain hose or the drain pump itself is usually to blame; no spin usually means the belt, the door lock or lid switch, worn suspension or the motor control. A musty front-loader usually has mould growing in the door boot or debris caught in the pump filter. If the display shows a code, such as OE, 5C, F21 or E21, tell us when you book.

Dryers

No heat on an electric dryer usually means a heating element, thermal fuse, or cycling or high-limit thermostat; on a gas dryer, the igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils. A drum that won’t turn points to the belt, idler pulley or rollers. Long drying times are very often a restricted vent rather than the dryer, and a crushed foil transition duct behind the machine is a frequent culprit.

Dishwashers

Standing water points to a clogged filter, a kinked or blocked drain line, the air gap or the pump; poor cleaning to blocked spray arms, a weak circulation pump, an inlet valve or low water temperature. Bosch codes are worth noting: E15 flags water collected in the base pan, and E24 or E25 a drain hose or drain pump that is blocked. The fix is to correct the cause, dry out the base pan and reset the dishwasher.

Ovens, stoves and cooktops

Ovens that won’t heat, bake unevenly or run hot or cold usually need an element, a temperature sensor or a control relay. On gas ranges, our TSSA-certified technicians handle ignition faults (an igniter that clicks without lighting, a burner that won’t catch) and ovens that won’t heat. Glass-top and induction faults come down to elements, infinite switches, generator boards and touch controls. Because electric ranges run on 240 volts, the panels should stay closed until the technician has isolated the power.

Hoods and microwaves

A hood whose fan won’t run or only runs weakly, lights that fail and controls that no longer respond can all be repaired. Over-the-range and built-in microwaves that won’t heat, won’t start or spark usually have a failed door switch, diode, magnetron or turntable motor; replacing a countertop unit usually costs less, and we will tell you so.
